prosttute's guild

Post » Wed Sep 01, 2010 9:47 pm

Is it possible to have a functional, credible world without prostitution? Yes.

Would the existence of prostitution increase the credibility of the world? Yes.

Would there be at least one town that permitted open prostitution? Yes, most certainly.

If there were prosttutes in the game would they have some sort of guild? Yes.

I don't know why some people want to come down so hard on prosttutes (heh), after over 4,000 years of recorded history you'd think we would have come to terms with their existence. Still, I can say exactly the same thing about six.

So, how to have prosttutes in the game without open prostitution and without six? Easy.

Burned down house, NPC says it used to be the town brothel but bandits came in the night and kidnapped some of the girls/boys and the rest fled. 'Here, let me mark the bandit territory on your map".

Big adventure: Find cave.
Big adventure: Locate and release captured prosttutes.
Costume opportunity: prosttute outfits.
Interesting conversation opportunity: prosttutes.

All in all a nice little quest and so far everyone's sensibilities are intact.

The final outcome of the Q: Some prosttutes have decided to track down their friends or return to their family (Possible future meeting opportunity including possible morally correct outcome) and some have decided to leave these lands for pastures (mattresses) new.

Any complaints? No. Great, quest 217 complete and for once it's a little bit different to all the others. Have a unique extra comfy pillow as a reward, your dreams will always be sweet when you sleep with it in you inventory.

Why on earth would bandits burn down the brothel and kidnap the prosttutes?? Surely bandits are one of their more likely customers?? Unless they just got fed up of paying . There don't even need to be any quests related to them, just their existence would add credibility to the world.

I keep getting the impression that folks want TES to move in the direction of Fallout:3 and I want them to remain miles apart.

I hope I'll be proved wrong, but I think it's too late for that. Once the Fallout franchise got into the hands of Bethesda I think we're bound to see the Oblivionization of Fallout (already visible in Fallout 3) and the Falloutization of Tes (perks and whatever may come in Skyrim that I can't name yet). I expect location damage in Tes 6 and very probably the new dialogue in real time from Skyrim into Fallout 4. Even if they are trying hard to keep things apart, I don't think it's possible when you have the same team with the same head director working on both and basically the same game engine.

I'm not against there being prosttutes in the game (Oblivion had Mirabelle Monet at the Fo'c'stle...), nor would I be against there being a 'brothel' that exists but cannot really be used by the player, but I don't see the point in there being an actual prosttutes guild. It seems rather unnecessary, to me.

Maybe we should also add a baker's guild and a street sweepers guild and a farmers guild and schools and a carpenter's guild and a bandits guild and a musician's guild. I mean, those are all in the game and they have worth. Add a writers guild, a shopkeeper's guild, a miller's guild and a chess club.

I mean why not, they all should be part of the game just as much as prosttutes.

How about we just have a bakery, an NPC cleaning the streets, some farmers here and there, someone building us a nice stronghold and some bandits out in wilds and a lute player in a tavern. While we are at it, we could also have a tavern or two where there are dancers which would make us feel like there are prosttutes.

And that way the fighters guild, the thieves guild, mage (or what replaces it) guild, dark brotherhood,...can all be improved.

While we are at it here making our wishes known, I would rather have Great houses return than to add a prosttutes guild.

I'm inclined to believe that many of us older gamers play role playing games more than first person shooters, yet Fallout 3 is aimed at a younger generation of gamers, a game which features prosttutes. Now where's the logic in that?

I think summer was referring to the overly violent/prosttutes/swear word type of thing. Not gameplay mechanics.

As in if TESVI was set in a wasteland after a giant dragon reined fire from the skies of a magnitude similar to that which caused the apocalypse in Fallout, then that would be Falloutifying of TES. Or having magic spells in Fallout.
Having perks is not Falloutisation of TES, nor is having real time dialogue TESifying Fallout. Because, believe it or not, Fallout was not the first game to use perks. And neither will TES be the first to use real time dialogue. There's no sense in keeping a good gameplay mechanic out of one game simply because it's in the other. We already know that Todd and co. are inspired by what they play in other games, so why should, and would, this not be the case for their own games??

Unless they just got fed up of paying
: This is the general nature of bandits, expand the story to depriving the town of income to facility a future bandit take over, or any other tale you can come up with.

just their existence would add credibility to the world : Can't please all the people all the time. I'm trying to be inclusive without the necessity, or avoiding the necessity of a transaction - which is the point at which several people would freak out.

Anyway, more ideas are always welcome.

I'm not voting for transactions, but quests would take too much dev time (in my opinion anyway) away from other things/quests. And can you really imagine bandits running into the middle of a town, kidnapping all the prosttutes (in what would most likely have been a busy establishment), burning the brothel down, and then escaping, all without attracting the notice of the town watch?? :P. I think those bandits would be better off applying for positions in thieves guild.

Hilarious responses, all things considered. We have cold-blooded murder and drugs (including alcohol) and everybody is so adamantly opposed to six.

advlt content? Ha. Right. Exactly what do we consider murder these days? What does that qualify for? An "E" rating? Or am I missing some subtle nuances hidden in the MATURE rating?

:sigh: Good grief.

Now, on topic, and as you might imagine from my above posturing:

I'd be all for this - not guilds but brothels.

I'm glad to see that someone raised the point's you've made here. I concur.

Like some people have already mentioned, it would be good to see a brothel here or there in the game, if only to add a unique change in atmosphere of a settlement or two.

I thought it was high time I got active on these forums again, this being my first post in a few years. It's good to see some familiar faces around. Good to be back. Peace.

The guild is going too far, I agree. A functional brothel isn't and here's why: I loved that we could get addicted to drugs in FO3. I loved the darker aspects of Vampirism and the Dark Brotherhood in Oblivion. There needs to be more of this in games, and not just for titillation, but to show a realistic vision of a world, one that isn't scrubbed clean of the uglier stuff. There are plenty of games for kids, but not too many for the 20 and 30 yr olds that will be playing Skyrim. As a previous poster mentioned, there could side quests and plot threads involved. Actually hiring a prosttute doesn't have to be anything more than a cheeky cut scene. :)

LOL Thank you!

I mean, the people in support of this sound like they are trying to push for there to be greater focus on sixual themes in TES. This, I believe is going a little further than it ought to. I repeat, I am not against sixual themes in TES (read my fan fic, and you'll clearly see this), but I don't think they need to add more focus to it by devoting an entire guild to 'ladies of the night'...

You clearly haven't read the thread properly then. It's not a greater focus on six, it's a greater focus on realism. I don't want there to be an elaborate cut scene or anything like that at all. For me the best thing about them would be the fact the city felt a lot more real, and that I could most probably find a lot of information about all kinds of people in the city from either just sitting there and listening to the patrons coming and going, or bribing one or two [censored]s for some information.

My idea of a prosttutes in TES isn't half naked cocaine addicted street crawlers that operate out of an abandoned house, more like a seedy looking tavern that perhaps just has a couple of rooms to rent that already have a female (or male) occupant.

We all know people are more interested in prosttutes than in bakers, street sweepers and chess players :hehe: They are cool, the others are not. They are half (or in other countries fully) illegal and people are attracted by odd and forbidden things. The Dark Brotherhood is a good proof that people like the extremes, as opposed to the banol (Fighters guild). I think an organization of prosttutes would be an interesting place for meeting and doing quests involving shady characters, illegal money, information gathering, extortion, drugs traffic and other things that are very appealing to infamous characters (I noticed in the polls that a good percent of people prefer the thief/assassin type of character).

First, who said they had to be all women?

Second, as someone who supports this I feel more like I want it in because Skyrim shouldn't be squeeky clean. Therey should be darker things, grayer things in existance. Towns shouldn't just be all upper or middle or lower class. There should be a gradient to them, with good parts of larger towns and shady parts of larger towns. Even if you can't use a brothel for what it technically is meant for, it would add something unique and different to towns. Possibly some unique quests as a bounty hunter to track down people who skipped the tab or quests to help them increase their drinking beverage selection.

Im pushing for darker themes, mainly because they're kinda lacking. They shouldn't be in your face 24/7, but the simple fact of them being there adds an underbelly to towns which gives them a beleivability to them. I'd love for Skyrim to have an underworld that is just as active as the normal accepted overworld.

Okay, in many ways I agree with you. I don't want Skyrim to be "squeeky clean" either, and I am not against an occasional prosttute or a brothel in some of the towns. I repeat--it is the idea of Bethesda taking the time and the resources to make an entire guild devoted to prosttutes (male or female, my bad...) that I do not agree with.

I think this boils down to interpretation of "guild". I think most people that support this have the idea of a "guild" being just a couple of brothels spread throughout the world, and possibly (but not necessarily) some sort of central guild headquarters. Whilst (correct me if I'm wrong) you imagine "guild" as the sort of in depth guild complete with questline, i.e. Assassins/Thieves etc.

Guild or no guild, I'd be satisfied with just a couple of brothels.

Are you aware there was a group of prosttutes in Oblivion in a house on the edge of one of the towns? There was a quest associated with it as well. It fit well. And in MW we had the dancers in Suran. Something like that fits well. But this started out wanting an entire guild for prosttutes which is quite another story.

Bethesda has never been too prudish to broach the subject, but just as it's not realistic to have no mention of them at all, it is not very realistic to have an entire guild focused around them. I was quite happy with how they handled such in the past and don't think it has any need for more. Actually, it's just another boring job that someone does. You could walk for a hundred miles around my home in any direction and not find a prosttute much less a guild of them or a club of them. So, just how realistic is it to have such a place in every town?

I think we're using the world guild with two different meanings here. When I say guild I mean a faction of people who come together to do their work and take advantage of the things working as a group would bring, not neccessarily joinable. Like, working the corner would be harder than working at a brothel. Why go fishing when you can have the fish come to you? Along with numbers adding to protection and a universal price instead of constant undercutting.

That's what I mean when I say guild. Just a faction of people who work together for the benefits that brings, not necessarily something joinable with a questline that leads to you becoming the leader. Sorry, that's my mystake for not explaining what I meant when I said guilds.

Edit: AliTheLord, this is kinda getting creepy. Our last few posts have been way to simmilar to one another.

Read my above post :D. I don't believe a guild is necessary, at least not in the way most people interpret the word. In fact I don't even think it's the right word at all. But, in my opinion, having a couple of brothels throughout Skyrim (and possibly a main woman that controls it, who sorts out guards and such to keep the women protected etc.) would be welcome. I've never met a prosttute (that I know of), nor would I know where to find one, but going from all the fantasy books I've ever read, almost every single major town had some sort of brothel in it.

EDIT: @ResistanceKnight

I think there should be a couple brothels at least, maybe more. They might be a great place to get the dirt on more 'respected' members of society ( politicians ). There could be unruly johns, drug deals, hiring opportunities for extortion quests or assassinations, leads on breaking into certain buildings. The more I think about this the more I like it.

Should probably mention I'm a big fan of The Witcher, which didn't shy away from any of this stuff. Not that I want Skyrim to be like The Witcher... :whistling:

I love when people are like "This isn't necessary blah blah blah waste of time."

1) Most of these suggestions exist because they were in former games.

2) EVERYTHING is the game is "unnecessary." Dragons, swords, magick, w/e. You don't NEED any one of those items to make the game fun. But having a large variety of "things" and "stuff" is what makes this series what it is.

If you want simplicity, play [censored] farmville.
