Protagonist as a Mother

Post » Fri Nov 27, 2015 11:30 am

Never said I can't handle the opinion, nor did I ever say I disagree or have anything against a mother protagonist, NOR did I ever mention SJW vs GG.

That's entirely my point: this entire fight is stupid as all hell, but hell yes I'm going to sit here and highlight the problems with what I like to call "tumblr culture." A lot of people overreacting to very basic statements made and questions asked, attempting to read between the lines and find sinister intentions that aren't even there, all so that a heroic speech about equality can be delivered and everyone can tell the speaker what a great and amazing person they are and that they should be president. All very warped if you ask me, because the very person that wants to give the inspirational speech is also super super quick to demonize people just to justify the speech.

It's stupid, it's warped, it's pathetic, and hell yes I'm gonna point it out.

And OP if you come back and you're freaking out, I'm sincerely sorry. :D

Got that right. My MILF will be hotter than hell. But she'll tell the boys or girls, "can't touch this."

Just gonna say this. The Female Protagonist is technically a milf (being over 200 years old in a chronological sense). Think Fang and Vanille from FF XIII.

Yeah sure whatever I know it is so tough being a martyr.

Of all the points you claim I was making about you I think the only one I claim was you have a narrow minded view point. If you want to take my challenge to your statement as me saying you are X,Y & Z. When I did not well... that says more about you then me.

Nothing said in the OP is "unreasonable or a little off" the fact that you percevied it as such again say more about you then the original poster. Someone saying hey isn't it great to see a mother as a main character because its never been done before? Is not unreasonable or "off." It is simply someone glad that something that hasn't been represented in games before is being represented now. What conclusion should we make about someone finding the OP unreasoanble or a little off?

I concluded that you were narrow minded I have no idea if it is because of A or B or C, but i do know you found a reasonable statement unreasonable so I responded. I made no assumptions as to the why only responded to what you actually wrote.

But you know diversity in games makes the industry stronger so like I said before the only down side is gamer rants against it driven by fear, but the good outweighs the bad. We get more varied stories, which is good because like hollywood games are recycling the same stories over and over again. It attracts more gamers which makes the industry larger and a larger market means MORE games which means more choice in the marketplace. It means with more games being made more people can break into the industry which means a greater chance of innovation. More innovation means new things are being tried which means better games in the long run.

Anyone ever hear of the Terminator series? No?

Well, it's a great example of a badass mother warrior.

Alien, and Aliens.

It wouldn't suit the narrative of "muh oppression" though.

Motherhood has been explored in games multiple times. I believe recently there was a game in which you play as a Momma Cat. Can't remember what it was called. Shelter, I think.

Well I don't want kids and I can't connect with a mother character so I'll just ignore that entirely.

Well back on topic...

I believe that the woman being a mother is a great and original aspect of the game. Women have been making big leaps forward in the gaming industry and even as a man myself, I am very glad to see that. My main reason I find this so appealing is mostly because the typical male hero of games have been done hundreds of times. It's really... the whole "Been there done that" kind of thing and even though it's not always a bad thing. The strong male character leads often fall short of being memorable. For example, the Last of Us, Dying Light, and BioShock Infinite are all great games but I personally found the characters I played to be generic and boring.

Ellie, Jade Aldemir, Lora Croft, and Elizabeth are some examples of realistic women in gaming.

So do I think this is revolutionary? Yes and no...

I think this is indeed a step forward for women in gaming. Growing up in a family of strong women, I can totally see a mother turning into wasteland badass. Hell I know my mother could, she grew up in the ghettos of Los Angeles (Pretty much the same as the wasteland). However, this is just a single step in evolution. I watch all of E3 and I saw more strong women protagonist in the games than I have ever seen in the last 10 years. I was impressed and I was happy so I can't say that Fallout alone is "revolutionary" but I can say for sure that this E3 2015 was one big and many step toward giving us compelling and realistic gaming everywhere.

And not just because there were many women main characters, but because there were so many original ideas that showed up this year.

As for fallout in particular, I guess I am more excited about playing the mother than I am about playing with a character that is based on myself. I don't know I guess I like the sound of a mother fighting to survive after losing everything. I mean I imagine that scene of her holding her baby and then the next scene is her getting into the back of power armor. Pretty cool in my opinion.

I have a feeling that whichever spouse isn't the Player Character is the one that grabs Baby Junior when the dash for the vault happens.

I agree completely. Playing as a mother is one of the aspects of the origin story that interests me the most.

I was more implying that there is a long long long road between being a gentle loving housewife mother and a badass who jumps into a power armor to fight an army.

That aspect of the story suggests a long and interesting story of growing as a person, doing what you normally wouldn't do, going from mother to warrior, and evolving into a survivor that can take on the wasteland.

I wasn't actually describing a scene, I just meant it as a comparison to show as a very distinct contrast between a mother holding a baby and her jumping into a power armor.

I never really understood why people are so into and hyped up for leading female roles. Like is it really that big of a deal? Male bada** or female bada** why can't we just have bada**.

Right? So why aren't more game protags female BAMFs?

Although I will note that it's kinda weird that it's treated like a big deal when it comes to Fallout/Beth. They've always had gender options. Though I suppose the emphasis with it is more the mothership thing right, a la this thread? I can dig it. It is refreshing and new.

Probably because it's so more rare. (At least for action movies/games).

People like seeing new stuff, in any medium.

I will laugh so hard before uninstalling the game if their "better storytelling" is some kind of story about marital issues. "I'm unhappy and taking the kids, you haven't spoken/looked at me once in the past 200 years!" Cue running across the wastes to get your child back in the divorce. :shakehead:

You don't see a whole lot of female protagonists who are also mothers in video games. They're usually fathers. Nice to know that mothers are getting recognition. Sorry it took so long, Moms of gaming. :D

My female protagonist will be named Catherine to honor the mother of FO3's The Lone Wanderer. "Die in childbirth? How 'bout I kick you in your nether regions!" Plus, if the 'look for your son' plot is used, it won't feel like a reversal of FO3's plotline. It'd be an interesting twist.

Moderator note: The tit for tat between two people needs to stop. Personal insults are bad, OK?

On topic: I just wish she would have been the Mother of a teenager because then she would really be ready for anything that stands in her way.

But yes, it's good to see a Mother in a role like this for once. Even Wonder Woman didn't have children. Seems super heros and Protagonist were never thought to have time for saving the world. And no, it's not more artistic or superior to other available options but it's sometimes nice to just be represented even once.

"Tis nice to be remembered.

I kind of lucked out in this aspect, as most of what we know about the player's background already jives with the basic concept I would have had in mind to begin with.

Most of my Fallout characters have been female - in Fallout 1 what I consider to be my "prime" character run was a man, but in Fallout 2 I played as a woman character. In Fallout 3 I originally was going to play as a man again, but just couldn't get the face to end up as something I was happy with; so I ended up rolling a female character again. In New Vegas I didn't even try for a male character, so now it's become kind of a thing where I just associate Fallout with having a female protagonist - I hadn't put too much thought into it before the game was announced, but chances were I was going to play a female character in Fallout 4 as well.

What I like about Fallout is playing sort of a "straight man" for all the weirdness going on in the Wasteland. I'm generally coming from a Vault or a very isolated settlement, kind of an idyllic upbringing and not at all prepared for the harsh realities of the Wastes. My characters' story tends to be about adapting to this strange world and serving as a foil to contrast against the wackiness that's out there in the Wastes. (Only in New Vegas was my character more street-wise and jaded to begin with.)

So I was very excited to hear that we would be coming from a Vault again, as that already played into the sort of characters I like to pick for these games. That my female character is also going to have a child just sort of further grounds my character in that sense. I think it'll provide a nice coloring to my view of my character and the choices I make while playing the game.

I'm also a parent myself, so anything dealing with parental situations in games like these tends to strike a chord, just because I can relate to those situations.

lol @ the comment regarding "specific minority groups". "Mother" isn't the same type of category as "White" or "homosixual". The former is about relationship and role; the latter are about largely predetermined identities.

I agree, OP, this is a potentially interesting development. Since I'm assuming the backstory is going to play a role in the main "plot" of the game, it seems that this aspect - biological parenthood and the aftermath of nuclear war - will be actually explored. That gives us some interesting roleplay opportunities - and there is the likelihood that they will be supported by the game itself, rather than just being in our heads.

I mean, you could pretend whatever backstory you wanted in TES games, but nothing in the game acknowledged it. I do have my reservations about including a pre-made character backstory, but I can also see how this could be a great opportunity.

I shall be a mother reborn amidst smoke, fire, and radioactivity. I will abolish slavers and make an army out of those who were formerly opressed. I will conquer the Glowing Sea and when all submit under my rule, we will march West and take back what is rightfully mine.

They will know me as Ghouleesi, The Mother of Deathclaws.
