Well back on topic...
I believe that the woman being a mother is a great and original aspect of the game. Women have been making big leaps forward in the gaming industry and even as a man myself, I am very glad to see that. My main reason I find this so appealing is mostly because the typical male hero of games have been done hundreds of times. It's really... the whole "Been there done that" kind of thing and even though it's not always a bad thing. The strong male character leads often fall short of being memorable. For example, the Last of Us, Dying Light, and BioShock Infinite are all great games but I personally found the characters I played to be generic and boring.
Ellie, Jade Aldemir, Lora Croft, and Elizabeth are some examples of realistic women in gaming.
So do I think this is revolutionary? Yes and no...
I think this is indeed a step forward for women in gaming. Growing up in a family of strong women, I can totally see a mother turning into wasteland badass. Hell I know my mother could, she grew up in the ghettos of Los Angeles (Pretty much the same as the wasteland). However, this is just a single step in evolution. I watch all of E3 and I saw more strong women protagonist in the games than I have ever seen in the last 10 years. I was impressed and I was happy so I can't say that Fallout alone is "revolutionary" but I can say for sure that this E3 2015 was one big and many step toward giving us compelling and realistic gaming everywhere.
And not just because there were many women main characters, but because there were so many original ideas that showed up this year.
As for fallout in particular, I guess I am more excited about playing the mother than I am about playing with a character that is based on myself. I don't know I guess I like the sound of a mother fighting to survive after losing everything. I mean I imagine that scene of her holding her baby and then the next scene is her getting into the back of power armor. Pretty cool in my opinion.
