Protagonist as a Mother

Post » Fri Nov 27, 2015 9:10 am

Yes, add that your character at level 40 is not the same as the one entering the vault. Compare your 1 and high level cataracts.

The bear anologue is an good one, but has an weakness, you character at level 40 see bears as nuisance beasts who drop fur who make good rugs.

Now add power armor, strap an fatman launcher below an gatling gun and an chainsaw as bayonet and we are talking about the danger of getting between mother and child :)

Was thinking of the cool scene in Aliens 2 where Weaver was dressing up before going to rescue the girl from the aliens and take it to 12.

Well, you sort of do get to chose who you impregnated, since you can customize both characters before you leave the character generation screen.

As far as playing as a mother/father, I wish people would quit crying about it before even knowing anything about the story. Hopefully the familial bonds play into a better story than we've seen in previous games.

I'll be honest I'm the type of male gamer who nearly always plays a male character, but this idea of motherhood actually does have me intrigued. I can see her going full Sarah Connor/Ellen Ripley (both iconic action motherhood archetypes who have their respective innocence trampled) over trying to find her child and carving a bloody path through the wastes to do it. Nice post, OP.

I've always appreciated the option to play as a woman. Women just get me. But I'm not particularly blown away by adding "mother" to the equation. I'm excited for it--and I'm excited to imagine it and play with it. I like the set up and I'm actually happy to work with the set up. But I'm not impressed, I guess, or feel that anything is "breaking new ground" mostly because the prerequisites for a mother or a father seem very small to me (being a good mom or dad is hard, but being one at all? I could get that started this afternoon if I wanted to, man!), and because I expect a lot of the rest of the character journey to be up to you. So if the character is gonna "break ground," I get the feeling that's actually just gonna be you breaking ground, as you carefully roleplay your imagination of this character through the wasteland.

Now, what I am really stoked about with the mom/dad relationship, is the reversal from F3. I just think it's real cute that you explicitly played a son or daughter in F3, and now, turnaround, years later, and you'll be playing a mom or dad in F4.

I wouldn't call it specifically "a big step forward". Other games have utilized a mother as a protagonist before, whether their offspring is a pivitol part of the story or not. Being a mother simply makes sense for the game setting (the time period, location/neighborhood environment) and narrative.

Can't wait to check actually. I have to wonder if the spandex will make her butt look big. Again, can't wait to find out.

Anyway I don't always play a woman, but when I do she's pretty hot. So I guess I'll have to add milf to my persona's list.

But to add in the topic of the thread, it does look unique to me as well and very interesting.

This discussion brings to mind a relevant saying:

You don't really understand the concept of uncontrollable fear until you become a mother....

I honestly don't know what the big deal is, in all (AFAIK) previous Bethesda RPGs you could RP a female character who had children at some point. Even in FO3 it wasn't impossible. FO4 is just the only game that forces you into the role of a parent.

Maybe your PC being a parent will tie into the story somehow. Potentially it's an interesting protagonist to play, a female character at the start of the game is someone who experiences about as much loss as it's possible to experience, having just literally lost her entire world, along with all the people she knew and on top of that losing her husband AND her newborn child. Most likely though being a parent in FO4 will have as much impact as playing as Argonian or Khajit in Skyrim, that is to say very little.

On the topic, I'm whatever. Tbh while males have been seen as main characters for a lot of older games and newer ones, I can't for the life of me think of a video game where I'm a father and its part of the story (not something I can chose as an unimportant option such as fable or skyrim), but the main star being a father?
None are ringing bells atm.
So really I'm whatever that we can actually be a father or a mother for the first time as part of a story.

GAMES IN WHICH YOU'RE THE FATHER:
- Red Dead Redemption
- GTA V (w/ Michael deSanta)
- Dead Rising 2
- The Walking Dead (Lee basically becomes Clem's surrogate father from the minute he finds her)

Can you think of any game in which you're the mother and it's part of the story?

hehe ok, if you look at it like that... :-)

it's not like it'd really bother me anyway, not for what it is at least. i'd just like my character as "blank" as possible so i can fill it with as much "me" as possible, and just like voice acted pc, having a kid imposes a limitation to this.

but i don't actually think we'll get much parentship in the actual game anyway, figure your kid will disappear at start and reoccur about when you'll have to kill it as the super meanie it turned into :-)

I am shocked SHOCKED no one in this thread mentioned Ms. Brisby from The Secret of NIMH.

I'm not too worried about the predetermined background and plan on making a female character cuz I dunno, something I've been doing since Morrowind :I

I think it's a great idea. I liked Leandra in Dragon Age 2 and Eleanor Cousland in Dragon Age Origins.

That's a neat idea! I may steal that idea for one of my games. :)

Tyvm for that list. Red dead and dead rising 2 I didn't know because I don't have an Xbox. I shoulda known the gta one but haven't bought it yet. I'd mark out the walking dead one BUT I did think of one to replace it
Silent hill the first one.

I can't think of one where ur a mother. It seems mothers are popular as villains but can't think of a single one where ur the main "hero" to play as. I'm still whatever personally about it, but kudos to Bethesda for doing it. Hopefully Bethesda can give those people the same experience and connection I got when I first played silent hill and wanting and being worried about my lost digital daughter.

In addition, in Lost Odyssey you play as a father and

grandfather

The only mother I could think of is Harvest Moon - It's a Another Wonderful Life.

In Kings Quest VII: The Princeless Bride - An Adventure game from 1994. You play about half the game (as I remember) as Queen Valanice - Mother of Prince Alexander and Princess Rosella. (The other half of the game you play as princess Rosella.)

Woah, this post blew up.

Yeah I'm not really trying to make any commentary or anything I just think its cool. And when I was watching E3 I realized that I couldn't think of any examples of playing as a mother in a game. (Especially before you become the powerful badass, because you could be a mom in Skyrim and in Fable) And obviously the number one thing that comes to mind is Ripley... the ultimate badass, but unless you bought the Nostradamos DLC for the newish Alien game, you never play as her.

I just think it is pretty darn cool. Mother side characters always need to be rescued (by their children, by their husbands) and I look forward to doing the rescuing.

Fire Emblem Awakening has lots of mother characters. Your own character can be a mother of two.
