Protect And Serve

I have not visited this section of the Forums in literally years, nor written anything in a long while. For some time now I have been playing Oblivion again, and had been wondering to myself. What would happened if the entire Imperial City was under attacked by the Daedra during the Main Story. More importantly how would the civilians, and Imperial Soldiers cope with such a situation? For a month or two I have the basic concept rolling around in my head, and only now built up the courage to try, and write something here. Using one my play through Characters. Roderick Tigerous, an Imperial Soldier as the Protagonist. Son of an renown Imperial Solider, and Cleric. Named after his father's best friend whom was slain in combat. A Redguard whose name was Roderick.

Basically it is a story based around the game story but not as the Main Character. More of the story of the Soldiers, and their part in dealing with the crisis. I thought it would be a good staging point for my first attempt at anything Oblivion related, or fanfic based I guess you could call it. I was bored tonight, and wanted to write something. I am not positive I will continue it, I may depending on what I can come up with. Comments, and criticism is of course appreciated. With that said, hope you enjoy, I did in writing it.

Protect And Serve
Part: 1

How did I miss it? There was rumors. Frighten survivors we swore were mad, or intoxicated. How could they have entered our world, here in our capital? His thoughts shattered by the crashing sound at the Barrack's door, bringing the Imperial Roderick back to reality. Around him settled behind a turned over dinning table were five other Imperial Soldiers. Bows readied, waiting for the Deadra to break through. Like him they were forced into the Barracks by the over whelming numbers of the Daedra. They had appeared, and attacked fast, too fast for any orders to be give. From where, and why he did not know. No one in the Imperial City knew. Something had gone wrong, terribly. A lot had since the Emperor's death.

A blade broke through the thick wooden door. A Dremora could be heard outside, bellowing orders in his devils' tongue. Almost within seconds the door gave way to the Dremora Valkynaz, and his heavy War Hammer. "FIRE!" Roderick ordered. A volley of arrows halted the Daedra's advance. He fell lifeless on the floor. Before they could set another arrow to their bows. A large Clannfear rushed through the door, and leaped over the table. His pounce had been true, his weight forcing one of the Soldiers to the ground. The creature begin to slash furiously at the mans face, letting out it's usual squeals, and hissing. The Soldier blinded, scared, screaming, and in pain tried to rock the beast off of him. It was to use it out weighted him. Roderick cursed as he drew his father's sword, and brought it down on the distracted Clannfear's back. It let out one more squeal before rolling off to the right dead. Roderick's face took on a whiteness like it had never done before, as he looked upon what was left of the now lost Soldier. Damn He turn to see two more Dremora had been taken by another volley of arrows.

There was no time for words, or prayers they had to get out of the Elven Gardens. Roderick knew most of the civilians would have been in the Market District by now. Shopping, or enjoying lunch at their favorite Inn, or the Feed Bag. He, and the other four Soldiers stepped out side, shields up. There was nothing. Only the smell of ash, and rot. The sky was covered in veil of red, and dark clouds. Fire danced along the streets where crates, and barrels of assorted items had once rested. Something was going on. "Where did they go?" Roderick asked himself. The streets had been full of Daedra, surely they had to be still in the Imperial City.

His thoughts again interrupted, this time by a Soldier. "Hey! Let's get back in there, we can use the second floor, and hold up till this blows over." The young man seemed to choke on those words. He clean shaven, pale face covered in beads of sweats, eyes glassy from the smoke, and perhaps tears. "You are suggesting we hide? While there are people still trapped, and Daedra roaming our streets!" Roderick shouted out at the frighten man. "I didn't sign up for war, alright! I signed up for the pay, boarding, and because I was tired of getting hassled on the roads. Forget those people!" "What part of Protect, and Serve do you not understand Soldier?" "BEHIND YOU!" The man only let out a scream, pointing out toward the street behind Roderick.

Roderick turned, and was met by the toothy grin of a Daedroth. The large Daedra swung heavily at Roderick, whom lifted his standard issued shield to ward the blow. The large claw scrapped along the shield, Roderick dropped to his keen to avoid falling from the force. He slash at the large creature's legs, while keeping his shield high. He heard the creature bellow in pain. Roderick peered out from his shield, and his vision suddenly was assaulted by a white flash of light. His eyes stung, and faces felt as though it was burning. Roderick tried to roll away blinded by the beast. What happened? A Fire Spell? Am I permanently Blinded?!?! His mind wondered frantically. All he could do was pad at his face with his hands, trying to feel for any wounds. All the while he could hear the battle cries of the other Soldiers, and the echoing roar of the Daedroth. A few moment later he heard cheers. "Got the beast!" Followed by. "Sir are you alright!" "Get him up!"

Roderick could feel arms grasp him, and pulling him up. The Soldiers placed him up against a wall. The blinded Roderick waved his arms about feeling for the wall behind him. He kept hearing the words. "Are you alright?" The white haze slowly started to fade, his vision merely blurry, and then clear. His eyes still stung, and his face had a few black spots from light burns. "I'm alright...thank you. He said lowly, breathing a sigh of relief. The spell's explosion must have blinded him, though not for good. That was close. He thought as he looked at the three Soldiers standing in front of him. "What now?" The middle of three asked. "The Market District, the citizens will be there, and are in danger." He paused, looking for the young Soldier. "Where did the other go? There was four of you." The middle Soldier merely gave a small smirk. "Coward ran off, likely locked the door in the second floor of the Barracks." They all shook their heads.

He looked over at three in front of him, adamant they stood, waiting to move out. Roderick turned toward the street that the Deadroth had come down from. The door toward Green Emperor's way was shattered. The Imperial Palace? Why? There is no Emperor, and plenty of guards. None of it made much sense. He knew only that there was likely to be civilians in the Market District, and the Palace Guards were more then capable. Roderick took off his helmet, he felt over heated with in on, the smoke from the devastation left by the Daedra made it hard enough to breath. His long black hair was matted now from the stressful fights. He looked once more at the three standing ready. "Lets go."
