Province: Cyrodiil.

I was playing Morrowind yesterday, and something came up that reminded me of this thread. I know its probably been discussed many times before, but just let me humor myself...

In Morrowind, Cyrodiil is described as both a "jungle" and a "rainforest". The game also makes note of Deciduous trees--that is, trees that shed their leaves. When speaking of Valenwood, however, the authors made a point of calling the forests in southern Elsweyr as "tropical rainforests". This is when the revelation struck me: Aha! I said, the Cyrodiil team has it all wrong! Oblivion's temperate Cyrodiil wasn't a retcon of its aforementioned "jungles" or "rainforests". It was a temperate rainforest, very much like those along the west coast of North America and elsewhere around the globe. Sure, the vegetation could have been denser (Bethesda was limited to using an outside utility for generating their forests, though) and perhaps it could have rained more (but really, who wants that? XD), but it is clear to me now that Bethesda stayed pretty close to the original lore. And jungle can really just refer to an area with dense vegetation.

I came into the series with Oblivion...so perhaps I'm ignorant of lore that said otherwise.

Thanks and good luck with Stirk!

What utility was that?
and likely limited by the fact of how much the hardware could take.

As for the forests, yea thats completely true, rainforest doesnt always mean jungle.

Oblivion is a retcon of the original designs of Cyrodiil. It is supposed to be a river based society (which isn't the case) and is supposed to be a heavily forested region (which it isn't) also there is "lore" about how a god changed it to it's temperate style which means it was not temperate prior to this. There is also concept art from the PGE that can be found which shows the landscape to be quite clearly a tropical rainsforest/jungle landscape. Having said all of that we are aiming for a very diverse landscape with several different types of forested areas, there will be more tropical areas and there will be more temperate areas that fit into our vision of what the PGE describes. Many of our pictorial references include pictures of the pacific northwest of the USA for certain areas of Cyrodiil. We have researched this topic to death and have decided that the PGE is our guide (as it should have been Bethesda's, then Oblivion wouldn't look so standard fantasy...if there is a province that should look that way it is High Rock) and we will be creating a much more culturally diverse region than is presented in Oblivion. The best part of Morrowind is the diversity, this was lacking in Oblivion so it is our goal to bring Cyrodiil's diverse populace and regions to life within the Morrowind engine.

That would be http://www.speedtree.com/ They're no longer using it though. Not for Skyrim at least. They've made their own equivalent software for this job, and hence now can design their own trees and lots of other stuff.

You're the first person I've ever heard say this. :P I used to hear "blah, endless forests, Oblivion is so bland."

Well, that response satisfies me. And speaking of diversity, I especially like the fact that you're more strongly defining Nibeneans from Colovians. Any chance you'll reveal any more details about their opposing cultures? Call me strange, but I've always imagined the 'real' Nibeneans being stylistically a collage of Elven-Roman-Pacific Northwest Indian-Celtic, and perhaps a few other cultures; while the Colovians always seemed the type to have lots of castles, sod houses, and cabins dotting a Patagonia-like landscape with a stylistically German-Russian culture.

And where do Bruma and Cheydinhal fall into this cultural grouping? Nord culture seems to dominate Bruma, but what about Cheydinhal? And do you know where Mir Corrup is going? I suspect its Nibenese.

Ah, cool stuff. Interestingly, I think the basics for that type of thing have already been laid with a tool from Yacoby meant to spread grass according to terrain texture. Imagine it being used for trees and rocks instead. Wouldnt take much effort to adapt it for other stuff.

That'd be so awesome if we could actually get to see Cauis Cosades doing his business when he leaves Morrowind for the Imperial City.

We have talked extensively about the role Cauis would play if when he returned to Cyrodiil. The only information I could truly give you is....you'll have to wait and see =-).

But for now, a couple screenshots of Stirk getting a few details such as the new rocks, cattails, grass, and a new tree.

You'll notice more and more of their differences as we post the screenshots of each group. We aren't going to keep too much hidden about them since most of who they are and what divides them can easily be found in lore, so you have any questions feel free to ask. Bruma is Nord and Colovian. A few Nibense, of course, but mostlyNord and Colovians living a harder life in the mountains. Cheydinhal hasnt been discussed but it wouldnt surprise me if it came to being just Dark Elf and Nibenese.

Ive used Yacoby's generator to put things across a landscape. It has advantages and disadvantages. Things will grow not up and down but at the same angle of the landscape which can look weird for trees. But it is fast..

Well, I think fast is the point, refining can always come later. That said, the original code could be changed so that objects would rotated when they are set down.

This you basically nailed, I dunno about the Indian part, but all the others are very appropriate. The Colovians are more of a Spartan type. You will see more greco-roman with a bit of anglo mixed in for them. Mir Corrup will be in Nibenese lands, yes.

The latest news on Province: Cyrodiil!

Stirk Takes Shape:

The first thing to notice is Stirk's mighty, resilient lighthouse. A beacon to the trade routes from Hammerfell to Valenwood and a call to the fishermen who call it home.

Along the route towards the city, a thin strip of land rounds the dock into the island. The sails roped in and boxes moved on and off as merchant vessels bound for Anvil prepare to take leave.

On the shores, the children of the poor pick at seashells as their parents bring their rowboats onto the beach, rod and spear in hand with oars.

The wooden, rotting shacks built on top of each other wait for those who live there to burn the wick of the lanterns as the sun sets on Stirk's poor district.

=-). Stirk is coming together nicely. Just wanted to let everybody know!

I created a second MySQL account connected to our database and changed the information in config.php to the new user so hopefully the problems won't be reccuring but I don't imagine my other sites get too much traffic-if there's just too much stuff going on in MySQL then I'm not sure how to fix that-I'm not exactly an expert in these sorta things. :/

Also, nice screenshots zackG-might put a few of them up in the gallery, although I'll need to crop some of them since the GUI is visible.

I like how tasteful the textures were choosen here.

Cyrodiil is a big country, big enough to allow a dozen of artists to live out their fantasies. I've wanted to support you for a long time, just didn't get around to it yet. Two province mods (TR and Skyrim) already are a big workload for my kind.

But this encredible wastness of Cyrodiil keeps getting me excited about this mod and about province modding in general. If I just had a few more years to live...

You are welcome to come join the forums Muspila. Your input could be useful and I know there is a little time you could contribute to P:C as sometimes its nice to change pace and work on a different project so that your creativity doesn't stagnate. I work on all three large community province mods :)

Hope to see you around over there at some point.
