PS3 and Anti Aliasing

Post » Sat Dec 18, 2010 12:33 pm

The PS3 is notorious for its anti-aliasing not being used/not used fully in its games, an area in which the Xbox 360 has been much better in in a fair few titles.

As a PS3 owner I know exactly what they mean, with certain games being awfully jagged and ending up being quite unpleasant to play.

Now this is definitely not the case for all PS3 titles, with Killzone 2 being almost jagged-less (?) and being a real pleasure to play.
But with games such as Medal Of Honor, I just can't stand it. It's awful.

My concern is that Crysis 2 may fall into the same trap, and for me if a game has significant jaggies then it really ruins it for me.
Even though it will have probably the most stunning visuals out of any console game to date, I would take the apparently slightly less visual quality of the Xbox version over the PS3 version if it meant that it would have less jaggies while playing.

Do I have anything to worry about? Do I talk any sense?

Please, no console/pc wars or anything like that, just want to know from someone more knowledgeable than me on this subject to let me know.

Thanks.

I always find myself complaining about anti-aliasing whenever I play on my PS3. I guess playing on PC affects me.

Please, do not post when you know absolutely nothing about the topic in question.

Oh god. Frostbite engine is notoriously terrible at a lot of things. Networking is the first thing, anti-aliasing doesn't fall much behind.

Now, we don't know much about how the rendering, precisely, works in CryEngine 3, so I wouldn't know if anti-aliasing is presented in a proper form in it. But to clarify, CE2 had decent anti-aliasing, along with their very own "edge anti-aliasing". So, I'm guessing it won't be too bad.

But yes, jagged edges, especially with lower resolutions, has quite a terrible impact on visual quality. It may seem like a nit-picky thing to most developers, but most of those developers aren't focused on making quality games. Anti-aliasing (in its proper form) is actually a pretty cheap way of drastically improving visual quality.

I'm confident that CryEngine 3 doesn't follow the Unreal Engine 3's non-existent anti-aliasing path.

Thanks

not very expensive
Does not compute. Alienware = Stupidly expensive.
Upgrading from 1TB worth of HDDs to 2TB costs an extra $150.
A 1TB HDD costs $70. You should only pay $70.

i7 920 costs $364 due to shortages.
The faster i7 930 costs $299.
Upgrading from an i7 920 to i7 930 costs $150.
Instead, Alienware should pay you $65 for the upgrade.

6GB of 1600mhz RAM costs $85.
12GB should cost $170.
On Alienware, upgrading from 6GB to 12GB costs $350.

Crytek have this thing called Edge AA. Basically, it's AA but it actually works, is only need at 2x or 4x, results in an extremely tiny performance loss, and looks so much better.

What are you smoking? Most Xbox 360 games are jagged messes.

I have watched this a while ago , seems like they are using edgeAA on consoles , maybe on pc too if you disable msaa like in crysis 1.

I just hope there's a more realistic option than "ON and OFF", which I hate with a passion. Damn you, UE3. Damn you! Burn in hell! D:

i do lol at the uninformed going 'edge AA is real AA'. I'm afraid to burst your bubble, but there's a very good reason why MSAA is so demanding comparatively: it's better.

Although hybrid MSAA+SSAA is the best option by a long way, which is even more demanding :P

I dont wanna troll or insult anyone .. but i think some of you are still overrating the Ps3`s capabillities big time.
I mean its is really some kind of wonder that a game like Crysis 2 can actually run on consoles and that was really a hard thing to do according to all the interviews about the optimization that was needed for Crysis 2 to run on consoles. Any further picture optimization like anisotropic filtering or multisample antialiasing would just burst the limit of every console (because the ps3 is an old and a weird constructed piece of techology and it is at its limit now. For real! Even Sony has confirmed that indirectly by spreading news about an Ps3 hardwareupdate).

Lets compare some facts to make it clear.
My PC is a 4X3 GHZ Core 2 QUAD with a GTX 280 with 1GB and 4 GB 1600 DDR 3 Ram.
I run Crysis Warhead with msters best visuals - config @ 1680x1024 with everything @ enthusiast setting but without any AA activated.
In some levels i get over 70 frames ( in closed rooms, caves and small range nature levels) but with many explosions and gunfire debries etc. in bossfights or huge enviroments the framerate drops to 21-25 frames per second. With 4x AA the results would be even lower.
My Pc is fairly not the worst of its kind and way way stronger than any console on the market.
But this game easily takes it to its very limit! Its just a monster of hardware demand.
Please dont take this as an PC vs console comparison.. i just want to show you what is needed to play a game like crysis with acceptable frame rates and i took my pc because i havent got any other choice.

Even with an heavily optimized Engine and many days, weeks, months spend to optimize the whole game for each console, there is just not enough power left to enable high AA and AF for Crysis 2 and keeping the same overall visual quality. Just be glad that you will be able to play a great game. If you really want to enjoy the maximum what is possible in Crysis 2 with AA and AF enabled then its just not a good choice to bet on the console version . I say that as an Xbox 360 and PC owner!

It's an illusion of a big map, most of what you see can't be reaches, whereas crysis 1's maps (especially the tank one) are huge. When i say huge, i mean about half the size of fallout 3's map in one level.
