PSN Trailer Differences

Post » Wed Mar 30, 2011 3:11 am

So, waiting for the gameplay trailer to become available over the PlayStation Network through the PlayStation Store has been something I was doing for nearly the past two months. It became available yesterday and I noticed some differences in the audio. The visuals are exactly the same as the version everyone on here likely already saw, but this version I watched had some sound differences, leading me to believe Bethesda simply edited the audio that came with the original gameplay video. Having watched the gameplay trailer many times, already, and having had the original gameplay trailer on my PS3, as soon as I watched the PS trailer and noticed something different, I compared it to the 720p quality original trailer I have on my PS3 and sure enough, the sound is definitely a bit different. In the PSN version, some things just seemed edited in for dramatic effect, such as some ambient noises while showing Alduin's wall and a more subtle difference between the the running music and the main theme blasting away, but some of the changes lead me to question what the true sounds that will be used for the game are.

For example, the PSN version has more of a clanging sound when Dovakhiin draws his sword in comparison to the original one, the noises made by Dovakhiin's attacks are different (I hear what sounds like a chain being shaken and the sound made by hitting an enemy is more subtle than in the original), and the noise that comes from Dovakhiin swinging a sword and hitting the air sounded a bit different. I'm tempted to say it made a bit of a wooshing sound, but I can't remember, for sure. Anyway, to anyone that has watched it or not, what do you believe those different sounds may indicate? Which sounds will end up being used in the game? Will they change the audio, depending on the platform?

That possibility is why I compared the original trailer I transferred to my PS3 and the trailer I downloaded from the PS Store on my PS3 using the same TV. The sound is definitely different... no doubt about it. They edited some things.

Bah, those 2 just don't like reading.

As for me, I just foresee a console war, but perhaps that can be avoided.

On topic; Since it's been like a few months for the PSN to get it, I imagine they'd get a minor audio upgrade in that time period.

Edit: I apologize if I seemed to offend you, didn't mean to take it that way ;)

By upgrade, do you mean to imply that the sounds heard in the original gameplay trailer were placeholders?

I'm not sure, are you implying that the PS3 has better sound quality?

See, that's what I want to avoid.

Well the PS3 supports 7.1 surround sound. 360 only supports up to 5.1.

No, I'm not. I never even said I like the new sounds. What I mentioned is that I'm unsure of which will be in the final game. They edited the sounds. I didn't say it was for the better, but they edited the audio. My goal had nothing to do with implications about platform superiority.

Then I suppose the sounds in the original were placeholders, or at least not up to par when it first game out. So they had some time to make it slightly better for the PS3. At least that's my theory

Well from the interview we saw in the early days of the Skyrim coverage, their sound designer is definitely passionate about what he does. maybe during that time he tweaked the sounds a bit for better sounding ones

What's better is probably best left debatable, on this one. Bethesda's sound designer was clearly passionate and I respect the work he's put into Skyrim, but the sounds don't come of as undeniably better, to me. They just seem different.

SO IT BEGINS.....

On topic, they probably just wanted to upgrade the trailer′s audio to amplify the hype of ps3 users, if they did upgrade it...

I noticed that I couldn't sign in, 8 hours ago. The day before is when I downloaded the trailer, however. Is it still down?

I haven't tried signing in today, but I saw on IGN that PSN might be down for some people for a day or possibly two days.
