psychic guards

Post » Sat Feb 05, 2011 3:44 am

I am sure there is another post of this but i want to know if they are going to put back in psychic guards like in Oblivion. To be honest it was the worst idea ever i hated it with a passion so i'm hoping they won't put them back in. It kinda killed the whole feel of the game every time i would go kill someone.

You should play Daggerfall. It had the most realistic guard system.

If they don't radically improve on this then expect a 'No Psychic Guards' mod within a couple of days of release

Everyone hated omniscient guards... bgs surely knows this, and I have faith it will get attention. Playing thief characters, or Assassin characters wasn't as fun as it could have been because of them, and I thing BGS will put in some work at that aspect of the game as a whole.

Yeah I'm hoping the Guards are reworked a bit. I don't necessary want them to be too easy to commit crime but them chasing after you in Oblivion was ridiculous. I can understand the theft or whatever the crime that you did is added to your bounty but everytime you commit a crime they chase you. :shakehead:

Hey, I heard psychic guards were loved so much, the mere thought of stealing things will have guards come storming in and arresting you! :celebration:

guards wern't actually psychic you just had to do something without ANYONE reacting, bethesda did this to make it a little more realistic, but they went a bit too far, the AI has probably been upgraded so I doubt we will be seeing them again

I couldn't agree more honestly. The guards in both Morrowind and Oblivion really broke immersion for me.
How can there be a price on my head when I kill someone in their own home? No one is around, and the only witness is dead. That makes no sense.
That's like me going to someones house (hypothetically speaking incoming), killing someone, walking out of the house and then instantly being arrested. That doesn't happen. Why would the police be there? Why would they automatically know what I had done, and to who?
That's essentially how guards worked in both Morrowind and Oblivion. It was extremely annoying.

I think Bethesda is quite aware for this and will have some remedy.

Unfortunately, I don't think it will be as complex as I would like it to be. I think if someone commits a crime, and no one is around to see it, then no one knows you did it. However, once people get around to seeing the dead body, finding an item to be missing, etc. then they will alert a guard who will begin searching for suspects. If NPC's saw you around the area, but not at the exact crime scene, then they might point to you or not. A guard can stop and question you, and depending no your speechcraft/personality you might get caught or not. If an item was stolen and there is reasonable proof of you being around there then a guard could search you. If he finds it then you get caught.

Basically I would like to see slightly realistic guard tactics.

But it also shouldnt be too easy. If there is someone nearby who sees you commit a crime. They should either go tell a guard (and not at the speed of light so you cant catch them) or try to blackmail you about it. If citizen A is the only one who sees me commit a crime. Whats stopping me from shooting an arrow in his back and stoppig him from telling?

I hope they psychic guards are gone, they annoyed me to no end. I mean, I am tiptoing in a house, stealing some loot, not even the NPC's who are sleeping IN THE SAME ROOM I am in are aware of me. Yet, some gaurd outside, magically knew I was there? Really? On a related note, if I steal something, unless it has a family crest or name on it, I should be able to sell anywhere and not just to a fence. I could understand the argument of selling it to the person you stole it from, but not even selling it to a shopkeeper a city away? I hope that is fixed also.

Yes, and they instantly teleport to your location now.

*somewhere in a far off cave; a Lich's lair*

Player: "This lich had a lot of cool treasure!" *grabs gold*

*Guards materialize* "STOP! YOU'VE BROKEN THE LAW!"

Player: "How...where did you all come from?"

Guards: "YOU SHOULD HAVE PAID THE FINE!"

THIS! It actually happened to me one time, I was pretty far away from a city, I accidentally picked something up(machine said stolen), and before I could put the item back, my perspective changes to move around and see an angry gaurd screaming that at me. I nearly crapped my pants the first time it happened because I was totally caught off guard. My other pet peeve is being hunted by them halfway across the land, I steal something in the capital, then I am on the other-side of the map and all of a sudden they popup out of the blue and screaming in my face (again), I was like WTF?!?!

These are the most dedicated guards I have ever seen anywhere. I have to ask what the hell are these guys getting paid? They have a house of gold? Their own harem? The promise of immortality? Whatever it is, its the best motivator ever!

Oblivion definately forced the player to play "honorable paladin" mentally.

Seriosly, that guards were damn annoying. You stab someone in the middle of the night and suddenly everyone in the country knows it.

Not just those, but other crime related stuff too.

How on earth would a merchant know what's stolen and what's not? -unless you're trying to sell him his uncommon item-

Why can you not sleep at all in someone else's house, instead of sleeping until getting caught?

We'll see what'll happen to those, but I have a feeling Bethesda is going to try to "keep the player in the right path" again.
