Psychics and Telepaths

Neat, I suppose. >> Now I know none of those have any basis in extant lore, but are they feasible based upon what we currently have? Like, say... is a group of dunmer mages forming a hive-mind within the realm of reason? <<

On Dreamsleeves: I'm very new to this idea, but isn't it a version of telepathy in a completely different context to that of which Aula is referring to? The ability to communicate with one who is far away is very different to being able to read another's mind... or am I missing something? (probably missing something...)

As an extension to this, what about psionics in general? I'm talking about more than telekinesis -- a "psi-blade" so to speak, or psionic "shields" (to block e.g. telepathy, but not physical things) or empathic abilities (transmitting physical/emotional feelings), or hive-minds as a few examples. Would these all be considered spells of some variety?

Psi Blade: Touch range Damage Health would cover this. Damage Health is raw magical damage, which seems close to the sort of damage a psi-blade would inflict. Add a plain old Shield spell to the mix if you want to 'parry' with your shiny touch-range spell effect. Mind you, you'll be spending magicka on every swing, even if you miss.

Psionic Shield: Reflect/Absorb/Resist Magic. If Psionics are spells, then standard spell defenses work.

Empathic Projection: Calm/Frenzy/Rally spells. Illusion school is very much about manipulating another person's perceptions and emotions. Bonus points: Command spells for Jedi Mind Tricks :)

Hive Minds: That one you're on your own, I'm afraid. I'm allergic to hive minds ;) Perhaps the Daedra could help you there ...

As for reading minds ... I don't recall too many canonical instances of mind-reading happening in the games, but my memory isn't perfect. My own sense is that, for Tamriel, the flavor of Strange and Unearthly Powers is Magic, not Psionics, but I've also been known to intrepret the exact flavor of the magic to my own taste.

Hope this helps,

Loranna

Disaster at Ionith presents two-way telepathic communication as standard practice for imperial battlemages. Doors of Oblivion presents an example where someone receives telepathic communication against their will, but I don't know any canon situations where a mind is read against someone's will.

Psychic powers aren't a separate phenomenon from magic. They fall under the school of mysticism, which is based on understanding that all beings and matter are still part of a primordial overmind.
The Chimvarium or whatever mentions telepathy among the dwemer, as well. Telepathy seems like, for some mages, a fairly "standard" thing. I am sure some Mages are better at it than others, just as some can summon more potent fireballs, but it does seem to fit into Mysticism.
Yup, and telepathic communication is fairly common in the first two games as well. Orcish witches were suprisingly good at it, and we all remember Jagar Tharn in Arena giving you the business. Medora and Nulfalga did it all the time when you did something they liked. The Oracles of course were the masters of the business.

... And now I recall my Daggerfall character wishing that sorceresses would just use couriers like ordinary people. >.<

Said my memory was going.

So we have fairly commonplace among witches and high-powered sorceresses/battlemages in the first two games. What do we have for the last two games?

They've toned down or left out some of the magical aspects in the two newest games. They don't have mages making seastorms anymore, or nuking dungeons. They don't have daedra possessing children, daedra summoning rooms in the guildhalls, or mummies raising themselves from the dead on odd weekends.

Not to mention talking in his head.

But so did Mankar Camoran, Uriel VII, Azura and every other Daedra.

Nulfaga also predicted the death of Lysandus, if that helps.
