PTSD from too much fighting?

Post » Fri Nov 27, 2015 10:12 am

When there's people and things trying to kill you, you have a chance of getting Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Should be able to be cured by a doctor or pills. Symptoms may be similar to addiction effects of Psycho. Would add a new layer of immersion to the gameplay.

Getting into more fights per day increases your chance of getting it, while a high Endurance reduces your chance of getting PTSD?

I think that might be a little too realistic

It's a survival simulation, great for roleplaying purposes.

It would be good if they have a hardcoe mode.

It may be ok for a mod, but it's not something I'd like to see in the game.

I think walking out of the vault and seeing the world you knew burned, would give you ptsd.

Fallout is far from a survival simulator, it's always been an RPG and will (hopefully) stay that way.

Closest thing we had was hardcoe mode but even that is far from being realistic.

PTSD is not a "feature", nor should it ever be one.

Unless you like losing control of your character every time there is a gunshot/explosion.

No, PTSD could never truly be properly implemented into a game. Especially a Fallout title.

Mental illness is not something you can cure with pills, they can help sure but not cure.

As someone who has a mental illness I would only want to see it in game if they do it right.

Anytime I've see someone try to portray it in the media it's nothing but outdated stereotypes made my people who have no idea what the people who have those diseases go through.

So my hopes aren't high it would be realistic and/or done right.

It would probably be better if they stayed away from it and let any trauma the MC suffers be in the players imagination if they wanted to RP it that way.

I myself always thought that an Insanity meter, like the one in Call of Cthulhu Dark Corners of the Earth, would make a good addition to any RPG, but especially Fallout. It makes no sense that your average guy / gal can suddenly face up to all manner of horrors without even flinching.

This is something that was done horribly in Mass Effect 3, and having it be an easily curable status effect would be even worse.

There are many things that are "realistic" that could be added to the game. There are suggestions like this, or maybe make taking damage and healing more realistic, or even equipment maintenance. The thing that has to be asked, though, is if these things would make the game more enjoyable or would they more get in the way of the fun. I think the answer regarding this idea is the latter. It simply does not sound like it would add anything fun or enjoyable to the game, but rather it would get in the way and generally be annoying to deal with. So no, I don't want it.

The only way to "simulate" PTSD would be to RP it. It's not something that would translate well to a videogame mechanic.

You want your character to act like he has PTSD? Find something that would trigger it. Gun shots, explosions, attack sirens, whatever. When that happens, your character now has a rush of adrenaline and becomes hypersensitive to his/her surroundings. Jumpiness and jitteriness are likely. Thoughts of the traumatizing event(s) run wild. It'll take a while to calm down.

PTSD? This isn't Army Veteran Therapy Simulator! It's a post-apocalyptic rpg!

Agreed. PTSD could be something that affects a character or companion within the game that is subtle but becomes more evident by the character's ways of expression through speech or facial means(ticks, twitches etc.).....if done right it could be a frightening and emotional situation if we had to put that character or companion out of their misery....spend 100 hours with a companion and it MIGHT be emotionally draining to say the least.

That's not a bad idea, and when it gets too high you start seeing things like Aliens and Deathclaws in pink tutus.........Nothing the odd shot of Med-X can't fix.

I don't want to see serious mental health conditions misrepresented as something you can cure with a handful of pills.

Just no, and no, and no. PTSD has already been cheapened and practically turned into the punchline from a joke by all the professional whiners out there carrying on about "trigger warnings" and "microaggressions". There's no need to cheapen it even further by turning it into some half-assedly implemented mechanic in a video game.

Your character is a war veteran, if he's susceptible to ptsd they probably already have it.

Also We should just call PTSD shellshock, just sounds like it's supposed to. Meaning it sounds serious, can't stand all these acronym terms.

[censored] military and their acronyms.

No. Just...just no.

It's a horrid mental condition brought about by severe trauma. Do we really need to cheapen it with, "Lol, take some pills!" Yeah, because that's what PTSD victims need, yet more fodder to be thrown at them by those who've no idea what they're going through.

Well what about if you are shot up and you can just take a Stimpak and make it go away? It's the same thing, what's the big deal?

Wasn't the military that came up with it, it was the "mental health professionals".... Shellshock just sounded so... amateurish....... So, they invented a keyword/tricky phrase for it.

Implement it like this: Under high stress conditions, the screen simply blanks out, and you either wake up somewhere else, with more/less clothing/equipment...... or, the game simply reloads from your last save. (you died.)
