'Pub' games

Post » Thu Sep 02, 2010 1:53 am

fable did this already, if there is any thing TES doesn't need it is half used mini games borrowed from lesser franchises. I am not totally against this, but they were not really fun in fable any ways and I was all ways annoyed by betting limits.

Hell yes! I mean, it's not like it would be forced upon you. It would be optional, and I, for one, would love to have a sort of mini-game in the pubs, playing something like poker or dice, or whatever they want to make available. It would be fun and realistic. :P

Cliche

It would be cool to see NPCs play games and such but why would gambling, in a video game, against a computer be fun? Its been done in GTA, Red Dead, New Vegas and countless other games. Never once do I remember the experience to be better than playing against real people on the internet, let alone the real thing.

Dev time should be spent on other things if you ask me

Yes, yes, and yes. It would actually present a point to going to the bars in the game. Unlike in Oblivion, where you could only buy useless alcohol potions and listen to repetitive rumors.

Cliche? because other stuff did it before? well then TES must be just about as cliche as it gets, with LoTR, Beowulf and various forms of mythology...
It adds to atmosphere and creates a more interactive world so it gives more a feeling of being there rather than just looking at it.

I'd love if Cheat (given its other name) would be played in a Nordic Drinking hall

Id like to see "Cheat", Blackjack, Texas Hold 'Em / Five Card Draw and a dice game like Liar's Dice. (Too much RDR)
EDIT: Oh, and things like Darts too.

I feel like these and other "real-world" games wouldn't feel right in Skyrim...

But otherwise we end up with Fable 2-style pub games. Which were all pretty bad IMO.

Well, maybe they can have things like axe-throwing or even knife throwing instead of darts. you just need a little more room.

I don't think a standard 52 card deck should exist in TES. Maybe an original card game with original cards. something more TES oriented.

Just because psuedo-visionaries at Lionhead Studios can't think of a good card game doesn't mean Bethesda can't.

Darts. With spears. Nordic Darts.

Axes and knives would make great darts to, if spears do not make it into the game.
Maybe the Adoring Fan will be the dart board.

If they can make simple, fun to learn games which are not easy to autowin 24/7 it could work.

Me: Gentleman, I lack money, I will put up my pants as collateral *takes off trousers and places them on table*

Second Guy: My socks *places socks*

Third Guy: My son *places child on table*

I end up winning a pair of socks and a squire.

Take NV for example. They had the card tables you could sit down and gamble with. Tried it a few times and never touched it again. so "I actually dont ever do these kinda minigames" applies to a lot of people I would think, cause I def cant be the only one.

You're not the only one. Tried caravan but never got into it.

It really depends on the kind of game. If it's easy to learn and the rewards for playing it are good enough, it would compel people to give it a try. Some games I've played have good rewards for the most obnoxious minigames. Some games have good minigames but you really have no reason to play them. There needs to be a good balance between the two to make it worth it. I actually got into Fortune's Tower for the Pub Games DLC before the release of Fable II, but in the game itself, you earn so much money through real estate (as it always has been with Fable) that you don't need to play games.

I wouldn't mind a few games to play. Back in the day I use to play a game called Conquest of the Longbow. It had Nine Men's Morris as a pub game. That was a lot of fun. It was actually a requirement for part of the game, had to beat a guy at it. We had a saved game right before it so we could go back and play it any time we wanted to.

I have no interest in gambling, though.

edit: I voted "no" not because I don't want pub games, but because I don't want pub games to gamble for money or items. I just want pub games that I can play for no other reason than for fun.

FFVIII (and IX) had pretty good original card games. Trying to get the best cards was very fun, and you could challenge random NPC's some of who had very good cards. It would have been much better if the NPCs knew how to play, but Bethesda can make smarter NPCs for sure.

I loved the card game in Final Fantasy IX. It's been so long since I've played that, wow I was young. Thanks for reminding me :P

ok, first off, people who dont like this idea ask yourself this, is killing questing and looting all tes has to offer, why not offer a cool break in the form of a skyrim minigame that has possible in game benefits such as gold, reputation, and other things. obviously skyrim will not have playing cards but arm wrestling, throwing knives, drinking games? who knows.

my ideas for drinking games are fun and fitting.

drunken boxing, you have to have at least one pint in you to play, for every drink you have the larger the pot if you win.
the more drinks in you the more damage you take, the less balance you have, and the more your vision is blurred and unfocused.
this game also has the chance of happening randomly in the bar if you spend a good bit of time there, someone gets offended by you and starts a fight.
npc should also have the chance to do this with each other providing a good show and another betting game,
cheering on the fight and hedging your bets as the rounds progress.

the next game is much more simple but no less fun, you have to out-drink a line of bar patrons while simultaneously keeping a poker face. the more confident you look while holding back your stomach the better chance you have of winning. the losers pass out, vomit, or just give up.

If they put Texas Hold'em in Skyrim (like they did in RDR), I would spend about 35% of my playtime in a pub playing that game. I hope the AI would be better than RDR though, it doesn't hold up to somebody who plays the game regularly at all (on that note I haven't played a simulated game that did, I suppose it is harder to do than it sounds).

$10 on the PSN netowrk to download onto your PS3. I got 7,8,9 that way.(I probably have them in a box somewhere on disk, just don't know where) And yes the card game in 9(and 8) was awesome. I couldn't play 10's water polo game for the life of me.(I did not care for the story and characters as well)

Personally I would rather simply see the atmosphere of taverns improved. Music, drunken hilarity, and without a doubt a greater volume of pvssyr, would be very well received. Pubs are about socialising, and I don't really see pub games contributing to the social atmosphere.
