a public hero or a power in the shadows

Post » Wed Sep 01, 2010 11:54 am

i never really want to be a hero in this type of games , i would much rather be a guy in the background who gets things done

in oblivion npc-s start calling you the "Hero of Kvatch" early in the game while i prefer anonymity

same thing with the guilds , i don't want to be a leader of mage , fighter or ... guild , just to hold a high position and have few nice privileges but without the pain of being in the public eye

with the guilds the solution is simple , just give player a choice somewhere near the end of quest chain : become the leader or get a position of power in the background

this also helps with immersion , would a leader of dark brotherhood or a thieves guild really want to be a a official leader of fighters guild

here the solution would be that you pick 1 official position like leader of mage guild and a few unofficial positions of power in other guilds

anyways... vote and tell me what you think

I would prefer to be a power in the shadows, the guy who saved the world and every treats like just another traveler.

In the beginning I like that to, However I also believe it's kinda ridiculous that people like in the Arena / Fighters Guild say your a nobody and just a recruit that's worth nothing while your the freakin Champion of Cyradill

Good points. I also would prefer to be a "power in the shadows" as you put it.

In relation to the guilds, it would be REALLY nice that if you decided to opt out of becoming the leader of a guild, you would still be able to return once in awhile to receive missions that the Radiant Story would create specifically for you. Instead of being the one giving out missions, still able to receive top-level, important missions as part of your duties as a 'second-in-charge'. Speaking hypothetically of course, as it would be difficult to do and they have also mentioned somewhere that they don't want to overuse the Radiant system.

The funny thing is we really didn't save it. We helped what...7 people get fromt he church to the camp at the bottom of the hill?

Anyway, I'd like the option to be both. If you play as someone who people wouldn't be able to notice, you shouldn't be recognized all the time. If you play as someone who lets the world know who I am, then by golly the world should recognize that. Here's hoping. :P

This is the same as the omniscient guards, everyone in the world just know what you did even if no one witness it, it's kinda annoying.

They fall in line
One at a time
Ready to play
"I can't see them anyway"
No time to lose
We've got to move
Steady your hand
"I am losing sight again"

Fire your gun Arrows,
It's time to run,
Blow me away.
"I will stay, in the mess I made"
After the fall,
We'll shake it off,
Show me the way.

Only the strongest will survive,
Lead me to heaven when we die,
I am the shadow on the wall,
I'll be the one to save us all.

I would like something in between. Not known by all, but not unknown either.

With my main character, I'd much prefer the anonymous hero role. His waves are subtle at their emergence, but the effects are large and all consuming by the end.
I'd wish the main quest would allow you opt out of recognition. It's not like any one is going to have a clear picture of you by the next game, so why bother with the hero worship.

As for guilds, I believe it should be very public, as guilds are powerful figures in peoples daily lives.
I have other characters for the guild quest, so it wouldn't effect my main character.

Considering that this time around, you're next in line to become the Emperor I feel people would know you.

Personal Preference would be the power in the shadows. However it would be cool if you could play your game in a way so no one knows your true identity. Like if you're always wearing a mask or a helmet.

That can't be possible. That would mean in the next game your character would have to be known. How strange would it be if everyone didn't know what race your character was. Are characters are always vague, an emperor can't be vague.

Public hero. It was so rewarding to end the Oblivion Crisis. It was amazing to see that the people of Bruma had actually made a real statue of my character, and just looking at it gave me a real sense of accomplishment. With Morrowind, the sense of accomplishment when defeating Dagoth Ur and ending the Blight was a lot less realized because no one seemed to notice and no one gave me credit for it except Azura.

I'm a shadow hero myself, but it's going to be a bit hard pulling that off being a dragon born and with your shouts that thunder across valleys. Them, "Hey what's with your voice when you were killing that dragon?!" you, "oh it's nothing really..." them, "uh huh, DOVAKIIN!!!" and you lose all anonymity.

Maybe my memory fails, as I only do Morrowind MQ once, but as I remember every NPC you speak with, told you something like "scuse me serra...(words)...nerevarine...(words)...thank you for being you...(words)...". They where like teenage fans, it was enbarrasing. If I remember propperly, that's it ;) .

we don't really know if our main hero is to become an emperor or anyone of big importance ( not counting the while saving the world thing ) , anonymity could be possible

Yeah I don't like attention myself. Having been in positions where you get attention in real life it can be awkward if you don't want it. Imagine not wanting a statue made of you in any form, and then your friends clamor together to make one of you (quite the opposite of humility), it would be embarrassing and it would be hard to have the heart to tell them to take it down.

Wait, you're mad that no one gave you accolades after you destroyed their religion, furthered Imperial influence, and set about the chain of events which would lead to Vvardenfell's destruction? In retrospect the Nerevarine, despite being badass, was a dike.

my ideal ending would be me killing the main bad guy from shadows with my "arrow of doom" and having him drop like a sack of potatoes in the middle of the speech to his legions.

then i just leave and later i hear people saying how some mysterious assassin killed the "main bad guy" and his armies fell apart , and nobody knows who he /she / it is

How many of the most powerful men on earth are in the public eye? A small handful? The truth it is, it is realistic to be in the shadow while one or two other powerful persons are in the public eye. If you know this and you are already powerful, it would be prudent for you to let somebody else get all the public attention instead. One thing about being in the public eye is you can become a slave to the fickle hearts of the masses that changes with the wind.

not necissarily. My main Nevarine DIDN'T kill vivec, and as such the religion was finally destroyed by some Daedra. Not that it matters though, since he'll come back eventually...

You have to keep in mind how different the comparison between the dovakihn and those secretive leaders of agencies are. The Dovakin is both (at height of power) a person of great influence and physical power, and doesn't have to worry about being sniped from a mile away or getting his car blown up. The real life leaders do however and are only powerful in intelligence and connections, secrecy is what keeps them alive.
