Public Service Announcement: Level Scaling

Post » Sat Jul 10, 2010 8:41 am

I'm tired of such misinformation being perpetuated. Sorry if this seems like a repeat topic, but the other one is spreading this misinformation, so I decided to keep it separate.

Since people are asking, wanted to briefly touch on level scaling. All our games have had some amount of randomness/levelling based on player level. Skyrim's is similar to Fallout 3's, not Oblivion's.

Hope that addresses some concerns, and we hope you're enjoying the GI cover story.

Have a great night

So, it's like Fallout. Which means it's barely noticeable...

Edit: ...in comparison with Oblivion.

That information makes me quite happy. If they had to go with one type of level scaling, I'm glad they chose Fallout 3s.

I hope all the dragons are fixed at astronomically high levels. :toughninja:

Good to see someone posting this up to let people get informed. I hate it when info is out and no one sees it.

Flinging opinion is fun. Flinging well informed opinion is better.

I can't really remember how enemies scaled in FO3 because it was so short.

Can anybody enlighten me how levelscaling worked in FO3?

I found it to be rather prominent in Fallout 3, just not in the sense of equipment like Oblivion. Weaker creatures are phased out and you were more likely to run into a giant rad scorpion or a super mutant brute than you were a mole rat or regular super mutant.

Honestly though, it made no difference because unlike Oblivion, you could gather up enough power to crush even the strongest of enemies.

So I welcome this new scaling with open arms. :)

I think the part that would be scaled like oblivions is the random quests. it wouldnt makes sense for someone to have you do somthing your character couldent do when the game gives you these quest based on how you play your character. I would be fine with it to that extent but every thing else should be like they have it in fallout

Until all the Bloatflys are eaten by Radscorpions, then all the Radscorpions are eaten by Giant Radscorpions, then the Giant Radscorpions start to be eaten by Deathclaws.

Don't get me wrong, Fo3 level scaling was much improved over Ob but it was still noticeable.

Yep, that was my point. Its didn't seem like they were getting too much harder as you leveled because of how they implemented weapon skills, etc.

I havent played FO3 in a really long time, how did its level scaling go? Was it more similar to Oblivions or Morrowinds?

it would be so much easier if they simply unleveled the entire world except main roads and cities and made all spawns completely random. much more fun to play that way.

Where as I still see minor flaws with Fallout 3's lvl scaling, I'm sure darn happy they chose a system more similar to Fallout's than Oblivion's!!!!

Fallout 3's level scaling is much better handled than Oblivion's. Scaling based on location rather than necessarily level will make it a lot more versatile and diverse in different regions. Why do I get the feeling dragons will be worse than deathclaws though...

I would like encounters that would be very difficult at low levels. If I could pull it off, the reward would be great.

Think about Morrowind, where there was a particular place to get a set of glass armor, even at a low level. But good luck in doing so.

and of course, nothing should be closed off. If I want to take a chance to see if my ass is handed to me or not, that should be my choice.

maybe one reason OOO is so popular.

Yes, we should come out of the jail cell at level one and meet with a 100 level creature right off. [/endgame]

Thanks for posting this thread - as I'm in the UK and haven't seen the article in question, I'm just having to go by what is said here and the level scaling discussions had me really concerned. I can cope with FO3 style scaling so this is something of a relief.

I wasn't incredibly bothered by Oblivion's level scaling, but I could understand some of the criticism. Now it's been toned down, Skyrim's level scaling should be a much better playing experience.
