Not at all. Plenty of folks play 'em. They are the ideal 'glass cannon' for those who want loads of capability mixed with a challenging vulnerability to keep things fun.

Might want to think about mods (assuming you're on a PC) that make spells more powerful--both for you, and your opponents. Good options to consider are http://theelderscrolls.info/?go=dlfile&fileid=219, and http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=12466, both of which also add new spells and spell effects. SM is especially good in allowing you to control a lot of aspects of how magic will play in the game. The INI file lets you determine how experience will be gained by conjuring creatures, for example--whether per creature, or by the amount of time a creature is in existence. Also how many creatures can be conjured at any mastery level by your opponents, and separately, by you.

http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:Character_Creation helped me.. it's worth reading over before you finalize your build. Before you exit the sewers the game offers you a chance to change your build before you venture into the world. It's a good time to save incase you decide you want to make changes later on without having to restart at the beginning.

I will admit that I haven't quite had the courage to make an Altmer mage with the Apprentice birth sign (but I have certainly considered it), but I am playing a pure mage Altmer with the mage sign. Not quite as weak, but still you really don't want to get hit more than once or maybe twice with magic at a low level with such a character. I'm only a level five so far, but I plan to get as much magical resistance as possible as I can find it so he can be more durable. After playing a pure mage with a High Elf once, I have a hard time going back to other races for such a build because I love the magicka boost they start with.

I don't think it's impossible. In fact, a pure mage Altmer Apprentice is very fun to play. The learning curve is steep, but if you've already got a grasp of magic it's simple enough.

One of my characters at the moment is an Altmer Apprentice Scholar who uses only Conjuration, Mysticism and Illusion as magic skills (she's learning alchemy as she burns through potions) and she gets by just fine. Although she tends to try and get past without a fight.

Done it. Went all the way to 75, with a handful of mods along the way. Best fun I ever had.

It's a fun class to play (though I do prefer the Atronach for an Altmer). I suggest that you stay away from necromancer and conjurer lairs until you've leveled your skills some. Against bandits and animals you should have no worries.

One time I went in a dungeon, with using a specific overhall mod and supreme magicka.. and I ran into a conjurer that summoned 4 mobs.. Mind you I was lvl60 at the time with my own devastating arsenal of magic.

I died so fast =P.

The strangest game experience I ever had also involved magic. I was finding that my current character's conjured creatures were dying within a second of appearing, and couldn't figure out what was going on. I thought at one point that perhaps my saved game had gotten corrupted, so I made a new character, and took them for a walk through the introductory dungeon.

I was surprised to discover a few more summons than I expected along the way, and narrowly survived after dying several times. Then, in the final area, before leaving, I saw *21* demonic princes, just standing around, along with 6 enemy mages. The AI was having trouble managing the numbers, so nobody was attacking anything, but still...

I ultimately traced the problem to a seemingly innocent little mod that added a much greater range of sounds to accompany magic effects. One version of the file was supposedly safe with SM, but it wasn't, and the sounds were not playing with conjuration spells. So these spells were being cast by the AI, but the sound mod assumed they weren't, triggering a recast, which wasn't acknowledged by the sound mod, which triggered another recast, etc.

I substituted a supposedly less SM-specific sound mod, and never had these problems again. But I still have this image in my head of those 21 demonic princes just standing around, as though they were all attending a conference.
