Purifying Dirty Water

I was considering this.

Would anyone mind a feature that allowed you to purify dirty water?

You can. Dirty water, glass pitcher (2), surgical tubing at a campfire. Evaporation is your friend.

You may need HH for this, can't remember.

You name an ability, it's probably doable via misc item-related recipes.
Purifying water, recycling energy cells, producing new energy cells, breaking down one bullet type to make a new bullet type, creating your own weapon repair kit or doctor's bag, making your own stimpack, making your own drugs....


Basically Obsidian went out of their way to try and make useless clutter not so useless, so it's actually very rare to find a misc item that literally has no purpose.

You should make Desert Salads though. The ultimate Survival food. High healing, great for hunger and thirst and I think it even adds strength.

Or Bloatfly sliders, disgustingly healthy!

And then wash it all down with a Zeus-powered wasteland tequila with a touch of Battle Brew for flavour.

Well, now I feel a little stupid for going in so blind on FNV.

Nah, the list of recipes between the workbench, reloading bench and campfire is massive. It takes a while to get a feel for which recipes are good, which are skippable, etc etc. I think it took me a good ~5 playthroughs before I even got up the courage to attempt the reloading bench.

As a tip though, check the Workbench and look up the requirement for Weapon Repair Kits. That's a very practical one with fairly common ingredients. At the Campfire you could try Bloatfly Sliders for a food item that actually heals a decent amount, or basic healing items like Bighorner Steak and Brahmin steak. The Stimpack recipe is also incredibly simple. You can also (though I personally never bother with this one) use certain soda bottles with cactus fruit to make your own cactus water.

From there, you'll just kinda learn other recipes over time. I learned most recipes just by mere chance; having the right ingredients in my inventory, seeing a recipe light up cause it was ready to be made, then deciding "hey these ingredients are actually pretty common...."

Yes, check the campfire.

http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Desert_Salad has a healing rate that surpasses that of Stimpacks, but it needs Pinyon Nuts or whatever they're called, which are fairly rare.
http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Bloatfly_slider are good for healing too. Not AS good, but instead it only has two ingredients, both fairly common, easy-to-farm and lightweight.

Oh yes, and much much more! You can even clone your own fruits with OWB. A simple steak can be made of any meat, but why have that instead of a Fire Ant Fricassé? Or maybe some homemade "medicines"? Or the fabled Wasteland Omelet, finely crafted from a Deathclaw egg?

And this is exactly why some of us regularly haunt the Skyrim forums. :D

Everything in New Vegas (not EVERYTHING of course, Motorcycle gas tanks for example, are, to my knowledge, useless in Vegas) has a purpose. A PRACTICAL purpose. Skyrim fans may say "we have more recipes" and that may be true, but let's get real: nobody bothers with using alchemy to produce resist shock potions or magicka regen potions. People make HP, stamina, magicka and damage health potions, then MAYBE something to increase enchanting or archery for late-game. So yes while the system is nice and shiny, it's very lacking in a practical sense.

Well I think I'll become a haunt.

Originally I joined gamesas, because unlike some people I liked Oblivion. So I joined the forums. I liked F3. But I my love goes out to FNV.

Oblivion just needed some updates. And I explain this before with one of my threads. Two Worlds 2, which people mocked me about, had everything of Oblivion updated. Shiny graphics, good combat I mean I can hit people with my staff as a melee weapon if need be. But not only that, but TW2 had what should have been in Skyrim.

The crafting system in TW2 is good for a fantasy setting genre. I like to take my swords and break them apart to their core elements. Clothes the same deal. Then you can make new clothes. That and armor dye should be a thing. I don't know why people hate dye armor. It makes your character more unique.

I really should put this in the other thread.

I'm just estatic that I can purify dirty water and I came in here like a dolt thinking I couldn't.

Some of us are the same.

My first experience with gamesas was Morrowind, though I didn't play it religiously. Just something I played with from time to time. Oblivion I played religiously, FO3 I played religiously, and then when New Vegas came out, I heard "yeah but Bethesda isn't developing it so it'll probably svck." Still bought it, albeit skeptical. Two years later, my skepticism is dead. Quite the opposite infact...

In fairness, Skyrim still delivers more bang for your buck than most video games out there, which is also part of the reason WHY I stay and haunt. Because even though Bethesda can screw up, they're better qualified to improve than most other companies. The other reason I haunt is cause I really wanna see Obsidian making another Fallout title. Hopefully the rumors that FO4 will take place in Boston are true, as that means Bethesda is avoiding the west coast, which always leaves the door open for Obsidian to return again.

To be fair, even junk that can't be used usually sells well as salvage.

Does it? I'm not a hardcoe scavenger. I can't be assed to carry a motorcycle tank to town just for a couple caps. :P

Aren't you the one who did the Billy Mays DID, or was that Cinco? Regardless, random stuff like gas tanks and conductors have high value, even if they are heavy, making them worth hawking in the beginning of the game. This is coming from the guy who usually has 30000 caps upon reaching Novac.

Billy Mays was done by Gunny. (who btw, what the hell happened to him?) I did the Courier, hence the avatar. :biggrin:

But nah, I only started scavenging just recently on my current character, though I will admit, it's surprisingly fun. Basically I just set his intelligence, charisma and luck up real high and focus him more on becoming as rich as possible rather than being a badass. Luck helps me clean out the casinos and take perks like scrounger for more caps, charisma is just to tie in with barter and speech, and intelligence unlocks additional recipe perks like Voracious Reader and (I think?) Vigilant Recycler.

It's hard to manage to loot a location like Vault 11 (TONS of random loot), but somehow it's fun. There's tons you can make with the loot too, which is always kinda cool to see what exactly you can cook up.

I think Fission Batteries for Small Energy Cells is a pretty good one, and although I try to avoid it since they create weight from 0 weight stimpacks, sensor-modules for auto-inject stimpacks obviously have their uses aswell.

And the items that are useless are propably ingredient in mod-added recipes :wink: I made my own for throwing knives when playing my sneaky-looking-sort. 2 Scrap Metals + whet stone + duct tape = 10 throwing knives :hehe:

I love the http://newvegas.nexusmods.com/mods/41013 mod, i can break down any ammo or explosive, and even the casings of them to raw materials, and then just make what i need. Only problem is powder comes only from merchants or other ammo, though with high science you can convert powder to different type. With my heavy who hasn't put a single point or book into science, i'm always out of rifle powder. But that's what surplus ammo is for ;)

I generally piss the Legion off, set ambushes for their ambushes (hey dawg, we heard you like you ambushes, so we put ambushes in your ambushes so you can ambush when you're ambushing) and reap the rewards, this is where being a wrench hoarder for Weapon Repair Kits comes in handy.

I pack EDE full of crap and I carry the good stuff, we stalk the vendors and then blow the money on GRA weapons that my build can't even use. Good times.

And I must say, Courier Six is most impressive, the reason why luck is so great with END is that it makes enemies miss their shots (aim too high) more often as well as you being a walking tank.

Trust me, I know.
Pretty sure that's why my Courier Six actually managed to survive a dead-is-dead very hard hardcoe playthrough on the very first try. It's just wave after wave of defense.

And on topic, Mad Bomber is another good perk. Obviously it only lets you craft explosives, but still. Combined with Nuka Chemist, you can supposedly stockpile nuka grenades, which are powerful as hell.
Likewise, Voracious Reader + Comprehension + Retention with a Tri-Beam Laser Rifle is good, because you can produce a permanent supply of True Police Stories and get a permanent +10% crit (+15% for the Tri-Beam).

There's lots of fun and creative combinations involved with crafting. Perhaps not always super practical if you're trying to build a character that won't die, but still INCREDIBLY fun to play nonetheless.
