Purple screen when I click play : Fallout 3

I don't know much about PC's, so I'm not sure if this actually means something or if it's just a random bug, but when I click play, the screen just turns purple. I am able to hear the loading music, but can't do anything but use task manager to close it. I have tried using the following fix, but it did nothing:

Open up the .ini file located in My Documents>My Games>Fallout 3. *Do not alter the one in the actual game directory labeled Fallout_Default_ini*
In the FALLOUT.ini find the line

bUseThreadedAI=0
change the 0 to a 1

then below it add the line

iNumHWThreads=2

EDIT: I was able to start the game by having it set to a smaller window rather then the full screen, but then the game crashed as soon as I was born.
