OK, we'll get right on that.

It's incredibly unlikely that Bethesda will make Daggerfall into freeware software, namely because of the fairly racy content contained within the game, and because they lost the source code to Daggerfall shortly after they moved. So as of right now, and for the foreseeable future, the only way to acquire it is to pay up and then run it through DOSBox.

And you don't need DosBox or any emulation to play it. Technology has advance to a point where such things are no longer needed.

Ya. I can see why ya post suddenly disappear. Ya basically just shoot ya own foot.

Though I am curious, does Bethesda still producing Daggerfall?

I think they 'accidentally' lost the game's code numbers when they moved from Bethesda, Maryland to Rockfall, Maryland. So they can no longer produce it.

Ya, I figure I heard that many time in the past, though I though Bethesda could just make replicas of their game without the need of the codes.

Well, we got Arena for the 10th anniversary didn't we? Maybe they'll give in for the 20th as well (though our luck they'll give out something like a TES:Travels game)...

When I worked for five months in an archive, I got a very valuable lession in archiving stuff: anything that isn't registered or tagged, is basically lost. I'm sure, if Bethesda wanted to, they could find the source code for Daggerfall. It will only require a very basic and in deep cleaning and tidying of the place.... Or maybe one of the devs. took it home with them for save keeping?

Those are stupid reasons on Beth's part. For one, there are many, much more inappropriate things for free on the internet. True, none of them have gamesas's name on them, but c'mon, let another website host it if you don't want the heat.

And while I know nothing of programming, it seems like if you have a copy of the game, you have the ability to reproduce it, even if it's harder without the original code.

If I recall correctly, there's licensed MIDI code in the game that would make it illegal to distribute.

The people who think Bethesda can just wave a magic wand and make Daggerfall Vista-compatible probably need to brush up on some very basic computer science.

So basically if they COULD make it then they might as well as they won't exactly lose or gain any more money only gain more popularity.....

We are not going to discuss "stupid reasons", because Bethesda can offer any reason or no reason at all, and there is no choice but to accept it. It's their product. They decided not to release it. That's all.

As to reproducing the game, remember that the original is well known for heinous bugs. Supporting such software, even if you don't actively fix the bugs, without the source code is a nightmare. Since you don't program, you don't know how tedious reverse-engineering machine code is. It takes a lot of time and money, and for the game's owner to do so with no expectation of profit would actually be stupid, as opposed to the purported reasons given.
