I Put a Spell on You (Quest Spoiler)

Post » Wed Feb 02, 2011 12:14 am

Soooo I officially hate this quest, i mean is there no way to complete this with a positive outcome? Is the train supposed to explode and you fail the mission no matter what? I was actually able to get on the train once and disable the bomb but then the train takes off and explodes anyway. I looked up in google and it seems others have the same issue. I can forgive alot of this games glitches but I mean come on... how did they not find such a major glitch in a quest like that prior to release?

Not sure what's happening for you... I was able to disarm the bomb and save the train. I had to use a combination of science and explosive skill to do it... are you sure you have high enough science and explosives to do it?

You dont need high explosive or science skill to disarm it you can use the code you find on the body of the mole, Ive done that and I get the message that ive disarmed the bomb then the leave the train, it departs and explodes and the quest changes to me failing to disarm it. I also tried it your way because i do have a high enough science and explosive skill and again got the message that I disarmed the bomb and again the train took off and exploded, the quest then yet again changed to failure. Hell nine times out of ten when I retry the mission I cant even reach the train before it just randomly takes off. Then other times I move towards the train get in through the door and it takes off leaving my character on the train tracks as I watch the stupid thing explode while im stuck glitched on the track lol.

I've managed to catch the train twice. Out of thirty attempts. Each time I deactivated the bomb in a different way. Each time the journal updated. Each time, the train exploded. WTH. I've put 36 hours into this game so far, and I was enjoying it even with the bugs but this? This is far to game breaking. I succeed, only to fail. Is there any way to mod this, or better yet, PATCH, this incredibly annoying bug? Because otherwise, I'm returning my game and strategy guide and telling everyone I know that this game isn't worth the effort. My last save before this was 3 hours back.

Your not supposed to confront the spy until after you eavesdrop on him. Use a stealth boy when you first go into the command tower and listen to his whole conversation and then you can talk to him, have him attack, and disarm the bomb.

When exactly are you supposed to eavesdrop on this guy? I've snuck into that tower at all hours of the night and never encountered him.

Yeah I read this somewhere else too so I tried it, the problem with me is i use the stealth boy and go in and he is completely silent and wont say anything so im at loss of what to try now.

I've had this problem too. It seems completely random as to when the train decides it's going to shoot off, as someone else already mentioned, out of about 30 tries I reached the train twice. I defused the bomb using the code, got a message confirming I had done so then the train screams off and blows up anyway. Most annoying.

I saved the train the first attempt. Just watch the guy from a distance walk into the tower, go in after him but don't go up the stairs. Listen to the conversation and as soon as he talks about the train, the quest should be updated. Don't attack him, just run directly to the train as soon as you get that quest update and then disarm the bomb. This way is only possible if you have either a high enough explosive skill or science skill. If it still doesn't' work after that, then yeah it's bugged for you. Try exiting the game and reloading an earlier save. That usually fixes any quest bugs I get. And if you don't have a earlier save, then thats your fault. I'm only 16 hours in and I have over 80 manual saves already...

This.

They are punishing you for killing/confronting the spy. The time it took to talk to/kill him is time you could have spent saving the monorail. It makes perfect sense to me.

I just did this quest last night, with no problem at this stage of the quest. I used science to disable to bomb, iirc.

My problem was that I had to wait outside for the traitor. If I was stealthy inside, he wouldn't start up the radio.

This kind of stuff is typical for Obsidian. I'm pretty disappointed in the tech side of this game, although I love the "idea" behind it.

So people have been having problems with the bomb going off. I'm having problems even getting the guy to show up so I can eavesdrop. I used my access key to go into the tower after getting the key from Boyd. There was no one there. I waited for nightime and no one came. I left the tower, hacked the terminal on the outside, got the log. Commander Curtis walks by and asks me what I'm doing, then tells me to wait for the guy after some talking. So I wait outside this time, all night, and nothing. So I go back to my last save after I get the key and wait...no one comes. WTH is this guy? lol. Is there a specific time? Do I need to stand in a specific spot? Will he not show up if I'm visible in the area? Might be a good idea to take off my NRC uniform... I don't know. I'm tired of waiting for this dude. Nice idea behind this quest, but....yeesh.

I actually finaly did is today, I reverted to an older save I had waited outside the tower till about 1 A.M. used a stealth boy and walked in the tower, this time instead of just standing there the spy actually used the radio which updated the quest and i disarmed the bomb and finaly the train didnt explode after doing so. I also believe I figured out why the guy didnt use the radio on my old save and I feel stupid] for this not occuring to me earlier. If you talk to the spy prior to catching him there is an option to inform him that you know the mole uses the radio tower since the spy is the person who was supposed to be investigating the mole situation to begin with. Which makes sense if you tell the mole you know he uses the radio tower why would he make a broadcast, the only stupid thing is, if you tell the mole why the hell would he still go to the tower in the first place??? oh well at least i completed it finally.

Okay, my problem is this: I follow the spy into the tower, and wait at the base of the stairs. I get the quest update "Investigate the night break-ins at the control tower", but then he never activates the radio. I've waited like 1.5 game hours for him to do so and he never does. If I kill him and take the codes, and go straight to the train, I can't get onboard to deactivate the bomb, unless I first go talk to Hsu, and then I can only deactivate it before it departs by hopping on the rail, and yet it will still blow up. I think the main problem though is getting him to start the conversation with the radio. Anyone know the script to trigger to accomplish that?

Oh. Well that makes sense. The guy investigating is the mole. I wonder if I could just follow him from inside the terminal, if the NPC is scripted to walk to the tower, then that should do it. Although the game might just always have a copy of the NPC colonel curtis in the terminal in his room at all times. I will try waiting around outside his room in the terminal to see if this happens, then maybe i can just follow discreetly and trigger the quest once he goes up to talk.

I waited off to the side of the tarmac.. he walked from the terminal towards the tower.. but I was a bit too close and he talked to me.. I bluffed him, saying I had trouble sleeping and so was taking a walk.. then I hid off in the corner more..

Told my npc's to wait, stealth-boyed, snuck up behind him as he was headed to tower, picked the disarm code off him.. gave him a couple secs after he walked into the tower, used another stealth boy then walked into tower.. overheard him.. ran to train, defused bomb (on the 2nd or 3rd try.. didnt notice the grille at first, heh oops)

worked a-ok..

I am having the exact same problem as isul.

The observe the mole going inside the tower, pop a stealthboy and go in.
The mole doesn't say anything until I sneak up further up the stairs, and when I do trigger something, he starts using the radio, only to stop after saying one line and my [hidden] becomes [caution].
(I had stealth boy active at the time, and left my companions far away)
I tried this multiple times, and the mole becomes aware of my presence no matter what I do after saying the first line.

I just wish he would just finish the radio transmission when I enter the damn tower...
I have the science and explosives to finish the jobs without the activision codes, but this bug is not allowing me to proceed to the next stage of the quest without killing him.

Quite frustrating.
I intend to postpone the quest(hopefully, the patch will allow people who have already excepted the quest to finish it normally)until a fix comes out.

I believe anyone who confided in the mole about the spy using the tower will have this issue, I just reloaded it from a previous point to before I started the quest guessing this will fix the issue.
And while this might be a bug I actually consider it a logical way for the quest to play out (with tram blowing up) if you let the mole know you were onto him. We could just say you disarmed the bomb you found but there was another you missed? ;)

So, is there ANY way to move forward if you've got Colonel Moron standing there quiet because after telling him you were suspicious he became instantly omniscient and knew you were hiding at the bottom of the stairs?

I'm in awe of how poorly this game was tested.

Err... I had a different problem. The way I did it at first, was parking my a$$ in the tower, and hitting wait. I waited for a week, each time stopping just before midnight, then walking around until 0200 hours. Then, I left the tower, waited outside, hidden behind one of the airplanes, watching through my scope. Eventually, I see someone walking to the tower. I run over, and, as usual, go to sneak mode before going in. As soon as I'm inside, the radio pvssyr is going on, and I get the 'listen to the radio message' optional, so I wait, without moving, until i get to listen to whole message. I learn about the train, and instead of getting the spy, I run out to find it.

A little while later, I'm at the terminal, walk into the train, find the bomb... Only to have skills that are not high enough to defuse the bomb - even with the magazine bonus! I notice, however, that I'm a sixty points from next level, so I leave the train, start walking to get outside... the train leaves, and blows up.

So, I re-load to the auto-save when I came outside the terminal door; turn around right away, leave the Fort, find some beasties, and complete a quest. Get my science high enough so that I can defuse the bomb with the magazines, and since I'm low on health, go have a nap in the Barracks.

After stretching, having my morning coffee, and doing my laps around the run-way... I mosey on over to the terminal, get into the train (which was supposed to leave "any minute now") read my magazine, and defuse the bomb. Instant HERO!!!!

But, I had no idea who the spy was before I got to the tower - I never wet to talk to the guy I was supposed to - and that is maybe why I did not have the glitches you guys are talking about.

Has anyone tried KO'ing the spy? To catch him alive?

This is exactly what happened to me. Very frustrating since I figured everything else out on my own up to that point; no walkthroughs etc. I saw the radio was in there; I did scare him off once by not hiding well enough, but hid better the next time; I snuck in after him and waited at the bottom of the stairs for him to make his transmission; ... nothing. He just goes up to the radio and chills out there. Minutes are passing and he's just hanging out waiting to get caught. Some spy.

In related news, I found it very disappointing that there is no way to take this guy in alive. You can actually trick him into turning "red" and then back to "green", but then if you talk to him he turns "red" again no matter what you say. And the only way to move the quest forward is to make him die.

Something a tad different has happened to me regarding this quest. I was able to "eavesdrop" on the spy(he never said anything while I was there) and pickpocket the deactivation codes from him. At this point I had no clue where to go so I just continued to do random side quests. I finally looked it up to see where the monorail place was and when I got there the train only had the option to go to the strip. I was thinking, OK, I guess I disarm it on the way, cool. But I arrive in the strip part of the monorail and nothing happens. I take it back to the camp and still nothing. I sis this about 5 times each way and nothing. Even exited the area and come back. Still nothing. The quest is selectable but there is no marker and all the text is darkened. I really don't know what to do but it's not to much of a problem I don't think.

If you go back and kill the spy, a new objective will appear. At that point there may be no way to disarm the bomb, but you can at least complete the quest.

I wonder how hard it would be to crack open the G.E.C.K. and find the setstage commands for this. I really really want to be able to sneak in and hear the guy on the radio.
