puttin out torches (For stealth reasons)

Post » Tue Mar 08, 2011 11:33 pm

I was thinking how in oblivion I would be tresspassing in the dungeons of castles etc and getting spotted because of the torches on the walls. I had an idea that in skyrim you could put the fire out with a spell or something, providing you with more cover in the shadows. Also would be funny to put out a torch a guard is carrying making him freak out a little. Of course a guard or some helpful person could re-light it or something.

I am not saying this is in the game or demanding they put it in. Just saying I hope this or some variaton of this is in skyrim

Wouldn't the whole, sudden lack of light arouse suspiscion and might alert the peeps anyways... But besides that factor I don't hate it... Yes for me ;D ...

In theory it looks like a good idea, but when a torch exausted without a reason, anyone should know that the torch has been put down by someone with ill intentions. It's not like they could blame an electric fail.

ups! ninjaed.

It isn't too unlikely for a torch to blow out given that they can be affected by wind or can run out of fuel. A sudden loss of light in a dungeon should startle NPCs though reflecting human behaviour.

This so much.

And perhaps a ranged "extinguish" spell.

Yes it should, that's how it works in Thief and it's magnificent. They become suspicious, they look around, but meanwhile you can hide in the dark and buy yourself some time to plan if you knock them down or sneak away.

Also you should be able to light torches in dungeons... with a fire arrow or spell. So if you're in a really dark tomb you could light the burned out torches. Works both ways = win. XD

I think the point is to arouse suspicion. A guy is guarding a door and there is a torch in the hallway. You put it out from a distance and when it goes dark he goes to investigate, which gives you a shot for a stealth kill or time to sneak by. Splinter Cell does this really well, would like to see it happen, especially if a lot of the lights are static and immovable.

They created a spell that extinguishes torches for a Daedric shrine quest so they should be able to do it.

From the title, at first I thought you were talking about the torches you carry, and I was thinking, yeah...but we were already able to do that, so...?

But after reading the OP, I understand what it's about, and I definitely vote yes. That's a great idea, though it probably won't make it into Skyrim. But we could hope that maybe it could be in Elderscrolls VI?

This is a great idea and one I have thought about too. Thief: Deadly Shadows did this very well with water arrows and allowed you to relight with fire arrows. Another cool feature they had was the ability to "pinch" out small candles. Would love to see a character animation in Skyrim where you are in a room and the PC reaches out with his hand and actually pinches the wick of the candle. I would think for the torches a frost spell should be able to put them out and a fire spell should be able to light them.

Along the lines of lighting, I'd also love to be able to place a candle, lantern or lamp onto a table, the floor or other surface to light up a small area around me without having to carry the light source with me while I search that area.

I also think they should bring in smoke bombs that you can toss down when trying to run away after being detected in stealth. Doesn't have to be advance tech, just some ingredients you can combine that cause a reaction. Anyway, just a thought.

Well vanila Oblivion have Darkness spell effect thats was broken, but thats can be great feature and instead of fixing it was scarped
But mods greatly improve games so there is can be option to douse torch in direct contact, douse torch with water arrow, lower light around player with spells.
I think thats will be good idea since it featured in ten year old games but by some reason avoided now.

i would love to be able to put out lights. i <3 splinter cell and that game's stealth revolved around darkness (which most stealth games are). you could shoot out lights, use EMPs, use special grenades, etc to turn out lights. i would also like to just be able to walk up to any candle or w/e and blow it out :D

I have no objections, as long as this is easy enough to implement, and I don't see why not. :turned:

Splinter Cell/Thief dynamic for area lighting with stealth? YES PLEASE! Also would help with Night Eye instead of a small little icon which lights up. Would have to be leveled with stealth perhaps.

i also think ghosts should be able to put out torches to enchance a horror flavour. and the player should try turn them on to stop him/herself getting scared [censored]less

The Witcher 2's doing it, and it is a great idea. Makes stealth more strategic.

Perhaps have the arrowhead contain water, so when the arrow hits something, the arrowhead breaks and spills the water on to the fire. Or, have the same concept except have a vial of water tied to the arrowhead.
