OB putting RPG's on the map

Post » Thu Aug 04, 2011 9:56 pm

So a co worker and i had a discussion about how OB had put rpg's on the map i mean since OB a lot of people have noticed it and ive heard a lot of oh hey have you heard about oblivion 2 (which made me want to summon forth Beothia himself to tear that stupid mortal in half) i recently told off some guy who didnt believe me that morrowind and oblivion where from the same series. So basically whats your opinion on the fact that Bethesda put RPG's on the map with OB/fallout 3. I think its great because it creates more awareness for the title and more demand, but bad because of that same demand causing companies to just churn out vanilla. i also dont like the fact that im going to have to rip a new lore hole in some of these wife beater wearing tools that are only playing it cause it was on the shelf.

Morrowind 3 is much better than Oblivion 2. :meh:

But frankly I thought RPGs have always been on the map.

Without a doubt.

They have on the PC, but their claim to fame on consoles isn't as old. I think it's actually Kotor 1 and Morrowind that put RPGs on the console map, and then Oblivion that kinda ehhh... let's just say mainstreamed it into something that a more casual audience can also enjoy.

Meh... I'd say Bioware and Lionhead are the main ones luring the masses to RPGs.

Anyway, as i've said several times in the past - accessiblity is bad for the genre. If you design an RPG with everyone who owns a console or PC in mind, you're going to end up with a lesser RPG. That rule generally applies to life - the more people you try and appeal to, the lesser your product will be. You may make more money over a short period of time, but you won't be respected.

It's like if a Black Metal band suddenly decided to soften their music considerably for pop / mainstream rock fans... or if a really classy restaurant decided to appeal more to families on a budget / kids...
