Puzzles and Locked Doors in Dungeons

Post » Wed Mar 30, 2011 4:49 am

In the Demo Todd has been showing off to the press they get a quest from the shopkeeper (Lucan) and go to the dungeon and look at the stolen Item to solve the riddle to open the door.

I assume this means if your just exploring random dungeons you will inevitably run into locked doors and puzzles that you cannot/will not be able to solve because you don't have the quest.

OR

This could also mean you would still find the key/required items in the dungeon without ever having the quest in the first place and be able to explore the entire dungeon.

So what happens in the Demo if you don't get the quest from Lucan but you still go to the dungeon?

Do you still run into the thief that stole Lucan the Innkeepers stuff?

Is the thief not there because you don't have the quest so you simply run into a locked door with a puzzle and no clue how to open it because you don't have the quest and if so how will you know where to get the quest so you can get the item required to unlock it and advance further?

Are locked doors and puzzles only randomly generated in dungeons by Radiant Story upon getting a quest? (I highly doubt this is the case)

I wish they would give us some more insight into this.

What do you guys think?

I believe that Todd said that part of Radiant AI was being able to pick up on quests half way through and have the first part opened up to you later on. And didn't Ob work this way? I recall being able to kill Umbra before the quest was given and still collect the reward...may be wrong though, it has been a while.

It has also been mentioned that for side quests, many times the person giving the quest, and the quest location can be changed. They will try to pick dungeons that you haven't been to, in order to promote exploration.

Im hoping that if you stumble into a dungeon and theres a guy there with some old relic.

You can take it then end up hearing about it getting lost or someone telling you about it or you can tell people that
that you found it and the news will spread and someone will come forward about it.

Then you can decide to keep it or give it back to them.

cannot find the exact article, but the GI article does mention that only the side quests will be placed in random dungeons, as this dungeon has secret chamber with a dragon language wall on it i doubt it is a random generated quest

I've always hated the world being blocked off by key'd doors that require you to go through a quest. It's necessary for some quests, sure, but I think the radiant story will do a lot to offset this by procedurally determining which dungeons have locked doors for a quest.

It definitely went like this in Fallout. I skipped about 3 missions of MQ by going to Rivet City :P

This makes me wonder if ONLY dungeons that are tied to the actual main quest will actually have locked doors with puzzles.

If so you would be exploring a dungeon and find a door and instantly realize this is a dungeon with a Dragon language wall and its tied to the main quest at some point.

I wonder if only main quest dungeons will have locked doors/puzzles simply because they put dragon language walls behind them. That instantly takes the fun out of 'Whats behind this door' because you already know...its a dragon wall.

OR it could mean they blocked off locations for the exclusive demo
