PVE is good, but PVP fails in this game...

Post » Tue Mar 04, 2014 9:10 am

I don't understand why developers and some people think this is a good idea. These type of "fighting for keeps/castles/resources pvp" does NOT work. It's the same model that Rift does with it's PVP and it's terrible. All it turns out to be is who has the biggest zerg, and everyone just runs with the pack and just mows down anyone in it's path. How is that fun at all?

I understand this was stress test weekend so a lot of people were playing and PVP'ing especially last night but I mean not only was the lag absolutely unbearable (which I'm sure they can fix) but it was just a meaningless and pointless zerg-fest.

But when you have open world PVP, you don't get as many zerg-fests where there are 100's of people just mowing players down. With open world PVP you have a lot of people venturing out in 2's , 3's or 5's where people go "hunting" and you have small battles where actually SKILL is involved, not this mindless babble of a ton of players spamming their basic weapon attack.

I hope I made sense with this. Zergs are a joke, in ANY MMO, not just this one.

Edit: I can imagine I'm gonna get torn apart for making this thread, but if you really think about it, what is the point of these mindless zergs of 1000 people fighting each other. I just don't see it. I would rather go hunting either with a small party of 4 people or even maybe a few groups, or even solo and go find people to kill in open world.

PvP is a zerg-fest? Sounds just like real life warfare since the dawn of time. I thoroughly enjoyed it and when guilds get established, with voice-chat, battles will become more organised and then skill will emerge. PvP in the Beta was mainly uncoordinated mobs, which is what you'd expect. Give it time.

Not sure if you played Rift at all, but if you did you would see how this kind of zerg PVP is. It's whoever has the largest amount of people attacking one location to just overwhelm the opposing side. There is absolutely zero skill involved.

When people say Zerg-fest, do they mean a large army will defeat a small army? Isn't that what's supposed to happen? Or is the implication that a large disorganized group will always defeat a smaller coordinated one? Because that's not the case in ESO.

Apparently you missed the giant PvP upset last beta when one of the Alliances figured out that tactics beat zerging.

When I say zerg-fest I mean a ton of players just rushing each to take over their resources and keeps. It could go either way. It takes no skill at all, it's just a bunch of mindless idiots rushing another team.

Did you play DAoC? Similar set-up, but there was space for zerging, group and solo play. I haven't spent enough time in Cyrodiil to know if it affords the same flexibility, but if there's room, people will work out how to run set groups once they have time to form.

The idea of removing/changing something that you do not like is not a solution. There are a lot of players enjoys this kind of PvP and it's your group/group leader's fault, that they can not hold an organised attack/defence and keep zerging. Once people get organised in guilds and such, zerging will be decreased. I have participated in Scroll run last night and the harmony was just beautiful even without a proper communication, proper server state.

Zergs are like hunting parties. It's inevitable.

I completely disagree with the OP. I haven't enjoyed PvPing in MMOs for a long while (since Shadowbane actually) and I had a blast PvPing this weekend even with all the lag. Zerg fests only work if the zerg is not also getting zerged. See what I did there? So A can zerg B, but if C starts zerging A then A has to defend or risk losing as much as they gain. Anyway, I think PvP in this game can support zergs, coordinated attacks, and small groups because the map is just huge enough to feel like open world PvP.

I don't remember ever talking to anyone that likes the Zerg.

I agree with Coggage in that after a time organized guilds will deminish the amount of Zerg combat we will see,it will never go away because quite a lot of players seem to be sheep that find safety in numbers, but I foresee it lessening. I don't mean sheep in a bad way either. I think many players don't really know what they should be doing in large scale combat so end up just following a pack which soon turns into a huge mob.

Organized guilds and proper leadership will change things for the better.

My opnion, PVP was fun, and enjoyed it, I felt like I had a purpose, support my faction, large battles is what I like, we had fights in open fields, small fights a couple of one on one's, covered everyting I could want.. I enjoyed the PVE as well, have no problems doing both..

There is room in Cyrodil for all types of play. In our campaign our guild used the zerg as a distraction while the 15-20 of us grabbed smaller reasources and keeps. A zerg will still not automatically win the campaign in this large of a battle. The setup is fine, you just need to find what part you want to play in it.

The PVP is good in ESO. Unlike other games where the dumb concept of "pvp gear" means new people get nearly insta killed in 1 second.

If you think PvP is all about zerg, you are simply not playing in a way that suits you.

I found that at pretty much ANY time, I was able to break of from the main group, and find solo stuff, or small group stuff.

But boy does this have a real battlefield feel to it. Even retreating had me grinning, at how realistic it was!

Or the times when you'd charge an army even when outnumbered, yet make them flee because they get scared! Priceless!

Chasing down an army of retreating soldiers and slaughtering them? That's real war!

But again, if that's not for you, no one is forcing you to roll with the main army. The map is so huge, there's something for everyone. I too broke off from the army at times, to pick off stragglers!

Untill some big guilds want to earn gold from AH and want to keep the keep for any effort the zerg will rule, but I guess the plan is that situation stabilizes.

I just curious if it happens and how it will work.

you just described the history of medieval and ancient warfare. numbers matter. just like history though numbers don't always win, superior tactics and organisation give you a gigantic advantage. I was playing PVP yesterday as AD and we managed to hold down a fort against both alliances for 30 minutes with lesser numbers and managed to beat them back all because we actually worked together.

if you don't like zergs, don't take part in one. find people who are organized and group up with them.

The zerg is something you should experience as it will go away.

And yes I to just followed the other players :)

I picked a campaign that wasn't very populated so my lag was non-existent until towards the end of the beta. I kind of liked it to be honest, raiding keeps, defending ones under attack. The only thing I had an issue with is when dying I had to run back which took a while. It was, overall, a great experience. I couldn't help but feel that this is what the Civil War in Skyrim should have been like.

People playing on the PTS say that zergs died out long ago once they figured out that tactics are far superior. Expecting anything but zergs on a PUBLIC BETA WEEKEND is just foolish. You expected to be paired up with master strategists who had only been playing the game for like 10-15 hours?

I'm not try yet PvP. But this thing may be different for everyone. PvP is wrost for you, but other guy may think PvP is very good. I guessing, your toughts be based on Morrowind, Oblivion and Skyrim. Old Elder Scrolls games always be single player and this is may be good for this game series.

Differentness always be good. Bethesda and Zenimax trying different ways for The Elder Scrolls. And they works good.

LoL i would argue the opposite... point of views :P

Imho the PvE is really boring (fighting mostly, because the world is beautiful).

PvP kicks ass.

My only concers about Cyrodill is that it is just empty. EMPTY. Overgrown, just few interesting points only and empty space.

This wasn't my experience last night. There was lots of different stuff going on with small group attacks on resources, larger attacks on keeps, individuals and small teams attacking the siege equipment from the rear. Plenty of room in this for strategy and tactics. Great fun.
