PvP - Smaller and Structured Modes

Post » Wed Feb 12, 2014 11:03 am

Hi guys,

I really would like to see smaller structured PvP modes... I really like the Cyrodiil PvP zone, its fun, but its looks like too zerg PvP mode to me, its fun but too chaotic. I always appreciate smaller, synergistic and strategic PvP. To be honest, this kind of PvP will make me decide play or not TESO. What I would like to see at the release is an arena and / or a WoW like Battle Grounds or something like this.

What you guys think about this?

I know it already be discussed here, but I want to renew this subject and see if you know something news about this subject.

Kind Regards

Well, no one can talk in specifics about what PvP in Cyrodiil is like.

But people can definitely tell you that arena completely messed up WoW for years to come, because it forced the developers to try balancing classes for 1v1 situations. Which is a ridiculous proposition. That said, Cyrodiil is a large place. From what we've seen, it looks like you'll have small, tactical gameplay as well as large-scale battles, depending on the situation. You may be part of a small skirmishing force strategically taking out a keep's resources. You may be part of a 100-man army trying to push across a bridge. Personally, I like the chance for variety and a more epic scope for the gameplay than the constant grind of a small map with the same group of 10 people.

I don't see it coming for the foreseeable future. THey really want Cyrodil to be the main focus.

I agreed. Cyrodiil its a great idea. But i think the maps is too big. Player will have to adapt with the sieges and the structures.

I think they just need to add, some other type of pvp. Like arena, that has already been said. Some like, 3 vs 3. 2 vs 2. Battlegrounds its something to see. maybe, with some work they can implement in lore.

I used to like the WoW arenas, even it is unbalanced PvP. Its fun to play with friends in smaller groups without be rushed by 100+ enemies. This kind of mini PvP games are useful to learn how to play your class / build. At the time developers introduced PvP into TESO, the PvP balance must be done. Maybe them can introduce a PvP mode that does not need a 1 x 1 balance, but a smaller group balance.

I allays liked PvP and I really expect TESO introduces other PvP modes.

PvP in Cyrodiil will be a war, not a single battleground repeated ad infinitum or a football match with swords (or guns in SWTOR).

But there does need to be an Arena system for the smaller formats of PvP , and the ES franchise did cover something like in oblivion with an arena in the imperial city. Perhaps this could be used for small format PvP like capture the flag and gladatorial style games.

I like lagre chaotic zerg warfare.

The thing is: single player can join it any point and help alliance to victory.

When in smaller resticted group pvp, single player is doomed to fail. Because all premade clan super groups.

I wouldnt mind seeing them tie in smaller structured PvP into the cyrodil war. Like in your home base you can queue for a 10v10 keep battle that then rewards your with a keep and resource in the alliance war or something.

Shadanwolf and Sturmer... I am talking about options... I really don't care too much about rewards or something... Just another pvp possibilities... Azarul, I really liked your idea, that could be a nice option.

if they make smaller scale instanced pvp matches, they will kill open world pvp

it really is as simple as that

if there is small scale pvp and it gives rewards, people would rather que for that, than going to the frontier 'hoping' to find lots of action

Donlep, this is easy to workaround, just put a cooldown or something like that... Maybe a max number you can join this kind of game a day... Simple as that...

I have a big problem with arena-style PvP. One of the reasons have already been said - that trying to balance PvP for 1v1 and 2v2 situations is extremely game-breaking from a balancing point of view.

The bigger problem, in my opinion, if the exploitation that occurs in this arena-style PvP. Players quickly find out which classes have the best synergy together and what skills are the most powerful in this PvP environment. This leads to dull and boring PvP where its not so much based on who is the better player, but who can unleash their coordinated attacks first and get the first player down with some gimmicky combination of attacks. It literally becomes the furthest thing from PvP.

However, I do think there is room for a 15v15 or 20v20 queued PvP system in this game.

Guild Wars 2 did the best PvP balance I have ever seen in any MMO, but I must to admit that they did GW2 thinking on PvP... I agreed that its almost impossible to balance small groups in TESO, but it would be nice to have an arena anyways... What can not happen is some players use the arena to take some kind of advantage...

The only way to get small scale PvP without taking away from Cyrodiil.

That's expecting an awful lot from the players.

Arenas force developers to make bad balancing decisions, pure and simple. I hope they are never implemented in ESO.

Agreed, they need smaller battleground type pvp matches in Cyrodil. 10v10 keep battles, or even 5v5 objective based matches would be great in an instanced battle. 2v2, 4v4 could be in the Imperial City gladiator arena that we saw in Oblivion.

To the people who think that arenas 'mess up' game balance... no. Smaller match-ups are the only way you can even find what needs to be balanced, zerg battles are so mindless and spammy that any spec with ranged and AE will do fine. Smaller scale battles promote personal skill and should be encouraged.

Thats I am talking about STX... But ESO is too flexible to be balanced in small groups... I would be happy with 10 x 10 or more instantiated pvp battles :D

No, smaller matches are not where you find balance. If a Nightblade (for example) is spec'd to take out casters in order to let the melee troops close in, then a Nightblade should have an easier time taking out a Sorcerer. With 2v2 style play (and anyone who's played WoW can back me up on this), the Sorcerers will all end up wailing and gnashing their teeth until the developers make them better or make the Nightblade build worse. And then everyone ends up being badly balanced, PvE suffers, and PvP tactics go out the window. Large-scale PvP forces people to use their builds effectively with others, and it creates a dynamic landscape rather than a static set of scripted matches, where the victor is determined by how pretty their gear is and how many macros they've made.

Yeah... or...

The same Nightblade will do very poorly and will lose just as badly to DK's, Templars, etc. Rock-Paper-Scissors.

Not to mention there won't just be "Sorcerers" in the game. Every character will be different. That Sorc could be in heavy armor, using sword and shield. I would love to see a Nightblade burst down a tank Sorc, they have a lot going for them.

Large scale PvP does nothing of what you listed. It is a spamfest, plain and simple.

You also shouldn't judge Cyrodill based off of a limited amount of time playing the game with other very inexperienced players.

People are used to GW2. They know zerging. Its easy.

It will take them time to learn tactics, at which point the PvP will be more DAoC and less GW2.

Cyrodiil looks nice but it's too much of a spam/zergfest.

It is fun. But I think more PvP modes would be very nice.

Like open world PvP, duels and Arenas.

It isn't about "knowing" it, or it being easy.

It's just boring to have just a zergfest as the PvP mode.

Based only on the previews we've had (because NDA, etc.), there's no reason to think that zerging is the only viable tactic. It actually seems like just throwing everything at one keep is an easy way to have your defenses overwhelmed by another alliance. 3-sided PvP means that you can't just commit all your forces to one thing.
