Python (programming language)

Post » Mon May 12, 2014 3:42 am

So I've been trying to get into programming languages, and thus far I've started with Python. That said:

-Is this a good first non-web-design language? (I'm already familiar in general with HTML and CSS).

-What's a good next step? Between JavaScript, Java and C++.

-What exactly can I do with Python? So far the tutorial's only taught me to do math.

I'll attach a poll purely for the sake of a convenient way to keep track of opinions, but mostly what I'm looking for is more detailed answers.

Javascript is only useful with web pages. Java is meh. Some love it like its the next best thing since sliced bread. C++ is the tried and true language that the vast majority of programs are written in.

I've never seen a need for python that almost any other language did not offer or do better.

My understanding was that it's designed to be very simple, and therefore good for someone that can, as I stand today, do no more than a basic, non-interactive web page.

Java or C++

Depends on what you want to do in the long run.

With either Java or C++, learning the other will be easy.

Javascript

Only useful for web development, if you don't want to develop web for life, don't bother with JS

With either Java or C++, learning JS will be easy.

Python

The only thing I can think of that is useful is Blender.

Java will become pointless in many site related things as HTML5 spreads in use.

Hell, even the "Java gaming 'experts'" (Jagex) are moving away from Java to HTML5, and that game was held up as the shining example of what Java can achieve (It used to be plastered on Java's homepage). Oracle svcks.
