They are gonna take blood veins, usually from the leg, and use them to bypass the major arteries of the heart. Usually because those arterIes are clogged with cholesterol and other nasty unhealty things.

It looks like the mortality rate is dependent on the health of the person and the quality of the surgery itself.

Have you tried talking to a doctor/surgeon? Here at the BSF, you will get sarcasm and quotes from Wikipedia.

Not trying to be insensitive, but this probably isn't the best place to have your question answered. You would likely get the answers you are looking for by asking the physician tending to your ill relative. Hope all works out for your relative.

My dad had bypass surgery. Not quad, but he came out alright. He had it more as preventative maintenance as he had not had a stroke yet or anything, but he was clogged pretty well. My grandpa had quad I think, but he also came out alright.

Sometimes experiences and opinions from a group one is familiar and comfortable with are the most palatable; whereas the medical sites may be the most accurate, they're often rather devoid of actual real-life meaning that a person can actually relate to.

Talking about it is fine, it may help him to feel better. If it's actual answers that he's looking for, the best place to find them is with the attending physician.

Back in early 2008 I had a heart-related procedure. I was told going in that they hoped to fix me via stent but that it might turn into bypass surgery depending on what was discovered during the procedure. As things turned out a stent was sufficient. (Issue was 70% blockage of the main artery in my heart.) A gentleman I worked with some years ago recently had bypass surgery, though I don't recall his being quad. He came out okay. This isn't to say everyone survives them. But barring other serious health complications chances are good.

In any case I hope it comes out well for you and yours.

My grandfather had quad bypass surgery, and he lived long enough to have a liver transplant, and is still kicking.

My dad had quad bypass surgery and 2 heart valves replaced at the same time a couple of years ago. He was lucky and got one of the best heart surgeons in the country to perform the procedure. It took him a while to recover, but his overall health and sense of well-being skyrocketed afterward. His heart was in REALLY bad shape. Overall it was a very good thing for him, but it was pretty scary while it was happening. He was in surgery for over 7 hours, and they didn't know exactly how he was affected by it until the next day. He was at high risk of having a stroke while he was connected to the heart/lung machine. Anyway, like I said, it completely changed his life for the better.

First of all I hope all goes well with your family member who is having the surgery. The wiki is a good place to start to get some of the answers there.

The % chance rate all depends. A few years ago it was low but now it's pretty high for successfull surgery and alot of people live long lives now. But as was said it all depneds on the health of the person. If the person decides to smoke or do stupid things, then of course the success for a long life will not be long then. It takes alot of work and strong will to go through, so if the person doesn't want to take care of himself then of course there is a strong chance a long life will not happen.

I hope all goes well for you and you family member.
