Is a Quad-Core necessary?

Post » Wed Dec 02, 2015 8:40 pm

Hello, Hi,

I see the system requirements;

Is the game taking heavy advantage of multithreading or whatever?

I only have a dual-core 3.7Ghz (AMD A4 6300) and a GTX 750.

Is it CPU intensive that I wouldn't be able to run it, or would I?

Thanks for any replies.

yes, you need a quad core for this generation, and a damn good one for this game.

You can still run it. But you may need to kill A LOT of background processes that may eat up time. You may also come to a problem that the game will start stuttering or stalling even on minimum specifications. Mostly in the open world or playing videos and sounds.

If you haven't bought the game yet, I recommend to pick it up on a console instead. If you have... well... best of luck then.

If you want a full "blah blah blah" explination on why this could be a problem look in the spoiler below.

Spoiler

On the modern PC, you are running what are called threads and processes. And there are always hundreds of them running at any given time. Obviously, this is probably confusing given that you only have 2 cores.

Well, what the OS does is it schedules them to be ran for a given amount of time before the next in the queue is allowed to run. The more cores or threads you have, the more work the pc can get done in a given amount of time.

Something like Fallout could easily spawn 16 threads, and at any given time 4-10 of them could be active. If you don't have enough cores to support it, then you cause some serious delays.

The reason this is important, is because anything that takes a long time on one process will actually stall the program. So loading junk, will cause the game to freeze if Fallout was just one core. The OS can still manage this just fine with one core, and multiple threads because of the reason above. But you are still running into a problem with the core not being able to support a massive load at a reasonable speed.

I would suggest trying out the game before doing any upgrades. The game might work well enough that you don't need to upgrade especially if you run on low graphic settings.

That processor can barely run Skyrim which had no DX11 features. I'm sorry but there is no way it can run FO4.

Damn.

Thanks, guys.

I didn't buy it yet.

I guess I'll wait, then;

Maybe I can get a deal during holiday sales or whatever for a quad-core.

Don't really want to spend the money on a "next(current) gen" console.

Even if I wasn't broke, that is, lol.

I don't mind spectating for a while.

Thanks again.

I assure you, it can. It just depends. Take it from a Computer Science student :P.

My craptop could run skyrim at medium settings if it had a dedicated GPU sitting off at the background. But it was doing software rendering as well. That was a Core 2 Duo I think. My later laptop was an AMD E5, which ran skyrim at Low outdoors, and Medium in-doors.

The A4 processor is an AMD CPU and GPU hybrid. Any tests you have seen of it could be where it's doing both rendering and processing. If it's just doing processing, it can run skyrim. Tested with a friend's budget system. But using a weaker processor.

Just upgrade your processor to A10. This is a desktop, I am guessing, so you should be able to fit the A10 into the same socket. it should be in the 200s if not less. You should be fine then.

I have a dual-core too (AMD A6-6400K), and will get the game. Dragon Age: Inquisition and Witcher 3 supposingly "required" quad-core, but I found them to be perfectly playable on my computer, and I suspect I will do the same with Fallout 4 too.

Nope, just a fan who will try the game with a dual-core and hope for the best :P

I guess I will report my experience here if I remember :)
