Quest(excuse) for an NPC to become a follower

Post » Wed Sep 18, 2013 6:57 am

Hey guys. I'm want to give my NPC a reason to become the PC's follower. I have a basic quest in mind: lost item, help me find it, found it, thanks, I'll follow you to the death etc. When it comes to short interesting quest my imagination is clearly quite bland.

I'm sure there are a lot of non-modders out there that have great stories to tell..and this is where you come in.

If anyone has a good quest idea, please post them, I really don't want to use what I have above. If it involves an item, make the item an amulet.

Character points:

-Superiority complex

-Egotistical

-Snarky

-Sarcastic

-Tact
-From another dimension

-Doesn't give much info to the player character as he's been instructed not to.

-Oppurtunist

-Cunning

-manipulative

Race: Non-Elder scrolls race. Looks fairly human.

Size: Very tall

Age: Possibly 100s of years old but he's supposed to look around 30-40.

He's a powerful sorcerer. Likes to control the mind of others and raise the dead.

I'm not sure what other information about the character is needed.

But isn't that pretty much every quest in Skyrim?

1) someone wants you to kill/deliver/retrieve something.

2) will pay you.

3) you kill/deliver/retrieve something.

4) get paid.

5) quest complete.

I'd think that ideally the quest should flow from the character of the follower. Trying to think of an interesting, fitting quest without knowing anything about your follower would be rather random.

I guess so, but maybe someone has a good spin on it and will share the idea.

Okay, I'll update the OP soon.

In case, is that character designed to keep the very same personality whatever the options chosen by the player ?

-Egotistical

-Snarky

-Sarcastic

Then, some more data (age, race, background, if already available), as to "plane crossing", I guess either going there to retrieve something (part of her personality and then have the choice to select different options (more ego, less ego w sharing, etc).

Yes, the NPC never changes the way he treats the PC, post completion of the quest he'll only offer his services and no thanks.

Race: Non-Elder scrolls race. Looks fairly human, I used breton as the race but that doesn't really matter.

Age: Possibly 100s of years old but he's supposed to look around 30-40.

He's a powerful sorcerer, losing a part of him wouldn't make much sense although that sounds like a pretty cool quest.

This is the best I've come up with(don't laugh). He was walking along the coast and then a dragon ambushed him and took his amulet. Fetch please.

How about, NPC gives the player a quest as a test of the player's mettle. Player fails (rig the quest somehow, eg bandits have stolen the amulet from where the NPC placed it). NPC decides the player is clearly an inferior being who is in need of NPCs guidance, advice and boundless charm and good looks. Optional second-stage of quest to actually locate and retrieve the amulet.

Or, as a slight twist, the NPC announces his intention of observing the player (for the NPCs edification and amusemant), and can only be got rid of by finding an item which the NPC finds more interesting and wishes to take back to his home dimension for further study. Asking around to decide on a suitable item could be as easy or complicated as you please, by adding any number of Tomes of Lore and relevant artefacts to the game.

Oh man, that first one is pretty damn good! The only problem is the NPC wouldn't take anyone under his arm(just so it's clear, I didn't create the personality and I can't really change it).

Same sort of thing with the first one, the character's superiority complex would never allow him to study an inferior being.

I really liked the first idea, shame though :(
