Quest Marker bug - On very rare occasion the quest maker (np

Post » Wed Sep 08, 2010 12:46 pm

Hello

Ive seen this happen now like maybe 10 times over the past year and a half testing my mod, where the quest marker which is an npc all the sudden like flips out, and shows on the map at some crazy location 10 miles away from where she really is..

Im not sure the significance of this bug yet, wether or not I should just get rid of the marker on her, as I dont want even a small percentage of people traveling to some distant location to find she's not even there in the event the bug happens..

Anyone else ever seen this?

Does it stay that way or does it get resolved after some cell transitions (or perhaps fast travel)?

Most of the times that it occurred I was a long distance away from where she was, and it was instantly resolved after fast traveling to where she truly was. Switching cells I dont recall doing when it happened, so I cant say on that one.

Sadly, its nearly impossible to replicate this to even test conditions within the issue and such, it is so utterly random :(

I'm gathering from your question that this is a bug with oblivion or oblivion mods maybe?

If she's in another worldspace or cell, the marker should be at the nearest door leading to that worldspace or cell. Is that a possible cause?

I wish it was that simple. No, there is no apparent reason for this, the quest marker shows up as indicating she is inside a dungeon many miles away. Ive seen two dungeons the marker shows up on at the door in the full Cyrodill map, and neither have I made any changes to, in fact Ive made no changes to any of the Tamriel dungeons.

Then of course when I teleport to Aleswell, where she is supposed to be, she is certainly there, and the marker no longer shows at the previous weird location.

No idea why this is happeneing.

/edit

Sounds like no one else has experienced this, either way, I'm just going to leave it as is and put a note in the bugs area in case it comes up. All five testers never reported the issue, who knows, could be something on my end only.

Cheers :)

Are you running any mods that add teleport doors?

Maybe the game thinks that going through a teleport is the shortest way to reach her?

I am running no mods except my own at this time.

Ive planted an old wood house for the npc in Aleswell, which of course has load doors, and she frequently goes inside and out. I cant unfortunately confirm if this issue comes up when she is inside only, because it is near impossible to replicate the issue. Yesterday spent a bunch of time trying to get it to happen, while she was inside her house, and outside, nothing, the marker worked fine. The rarity of it happeneing is extreme.

I've considered just removing the quest marker on her, as everyone is told to find her in Aleswell, only downside to doing that is likely 90% of people would expect to see a marker for the new quest, and considering the rarity of the issue (which may happen to like 5% of the people), I think I should just leave in the marker and go with it. Who knows, maybe it wont ever happen on anyone elses end anyhow.

The last time I saw a situation like this with a mod of my own, I used Player.moveto to go where the NPC really was, and the map marker turned out to be accurate. Does your NPC move between locations at all, or is it all supposed to happen at Aleswell?

In my case it was a wander "at Editor location" that should have been "at current location" and the NPC had been created elsewhere and moved to the desired location later. So whenever that package came up, the NPC went "home".

Unfortunately no, she never leaves the confines of Aleswell, and her editor location is set inside her house there.

I'll recheck her packages again to be sure, but she does not even have a wander package running ever, all of them are travel packages to specific locations within aleswell.

On a side note, what do you guys think?

If I removed the quest marker, and just left the quest update info? It does clearly state she can be found in Aleswell, and her store is easily found there too. Further more there are a number of quests beyond that which send the player back to her in Aleswell, and again, wondering the validity of even bothering with the quest marker, as everyone already knows where to go anyhow.
