Dragon Age (the good one ;)) did this too. Saves me time from constantly checking the wiki :lmao:

Really, this thing doesn't tell you anything that you didn't know before, it's just more convenient really.

Don't like it, turn it off (or don't turn it on)

Oh no, we know their names instantly and they're also telling us their life stories without any indication!

SO UNREALISTIC AND EASY, WHY NOT GIVES US A WIN BUTTON.

Seriously, stop this "makes the game too easy" [censored]. You already knew their names before, it just stops you from walking to every damn person in the bar until sombedy says something unique.
I'm sorry, finding a needle in a haystack is not challenging, it's annoying.

If the excessive handholding isn't a problem to you... good for you. You seem to think the game is perfect and beyond all possible criticism (why else, every time there is a criticism presented, you're there shouting against it). And... Walking to NPC's is annoying? I...

Let's just do this your way, ok...

Who cares about this? Not me, no. The game will be betterer than most of anything ever, so why care about this? Challenge or thinking is annoying and highly overrated anyway.

So challenge is walking up to people now?

Might as well complain how picking up herbs is instant instead of giving us an elaborate minigame. You know, for challenge, realism and complexity.
Also [censored] annoying.

Are F*****g serious!? Oh my god. Then again I didn't notice so maybe it's quite subtle. I tend to overreact.

In TGS (Tokyo Game Show), I just witnessed quest markers being shown not only on the compass, but in the actual world as well. Like a light bulb above the head of an NPC, except that it's a marker icon.

Your thoughts?

I personally don't like it, because it makes it feels like... I don't know, some MMO (because they usually have stuff like that, at least the ones that I've played) in that specific sense (and that only, of course).
Then again, I don't like quest markers altogether. I truly hope they'll be optional in a complete way that still makes quests work with proper directions (unlike in Oblivion).

I saw that too,and i can understand what your saying....But,i thought we could turn that off?

I will admit though,i'm not a fan of quest markers.

I especially said that. Didn't I? I even highlighted it for your convenience and explained afterwards how that was what I said.

But yeah it's all [censored] annoying. This is great addition to the game and I embrace it.

If you mean Direction, the Quest Giver will walk with you out of Town and then tell you to follow that Road and go up the Mountain until you get to your Destination.

I remember that as well.

That plus turning off quest markers = nothing to worry about? I think so.

I don't think it highlights quest givers just the person you need to see for the quest you are on, from the video i saw anyway it looked like that person was part of the quest the PC was already doing.

And this.

I doubt we would see quest icons for NPC's who have quests available. You would think that would have been mentioned in the countless previews Skyrim has received.

Yes we can turn them off, but there are many questions we don't know the answers of yet. Like...

Can we toggle all quest markers altogether or just specific ones at each time?
Will quests still be playable without quest markers, unlike in Oblivion? Will there be enough directions, despite there being Radiant Story in the game?

I imagine there are also people who like quest markers and want to keep them on the compass, but not like a light bulb above the head of NPCs.

That is correct. The dialouge with Alvor in the video clearly showed that the player was already in a quest. The quest marker has never shown who has quests before we have gotten them, but only shown the exact place where to go or what to get.

i dont mind it so long as its a toggle feature. would only use it if i for some reason could not find the quest target.... but all that takes is looking at the quest log and knowing the name of the guy you need.

I see your point there. In that, people who like quest markers might not want them above an NPC's head. I guess we will find out in less than two months.

Yep, but from what some are saying in this thread it seems they think there will be quest icons all over the place like an MMO, which does not seem to be the case.

Find Waldo, the most challenging game ever created by man.

Skyrim only loses by not imitating it.

And again, on topic, this new thing doesn't tell you anything more that you didn't knew before from the compass anyway, and it hardly looks out of place.
And if it still annoys you, turn it off.

That's bullsh*t MMO crap meant to make a game over-the-top accessible by everyone. It has no place in a single-player RPG. If TES ever went in that direction I think I would just give up on it entirely.

To people who are wondering if you get enough direction without the markers:
Remember what Todd said about people liking you will give you more details about a quest and be more vague if they dislike you? This gives me confidence you'll get what you want. (if this is true, and I can turn off the markers I certainly will)

I won't like it all the time, probably not on my first play through, but I do remember times in Oblivion where I would be in, say, the Market District looking for someone and could not find them for the life of me.

In some ways it'll be helpful and others it'll be annoying, but at least we'll (hopefully) be able to turn them off.

We'll have to wait and see really. If they are there,i won't find it a massive problem,i'd just prefer not to have them,or the a toggle in this case (which i believe we have anyway ).

I just prefer speech direction and the getting lost and exploring aspect of it,but some don't want that.

it just stops you from walking to every damn person in the bar until sombedy says something unique.

Interacting with people in a normal manner? *gasp!* Can't have that, people must be able to get right to their quest objectives ASAP, no delay, hurry, hurry! No waste time chatting with people to find your target like a normal person, there's the target right there, go get 'im!

Quest markers on the compass, a magicka-free clairvoyance spell that'll help you get around obstacles in between you and where the compass marker is pointing to, and now in-world arrows pointing right to the target like a "Right Here, Dummy!" sign. I bet it's not limited to NPCs either, but also treasures and enemies. Get a quest to search a deep dungeon for a long-lost relic? It's cool. Your compass inately knows where the dungeon is and where in the dungeon it is, clairvoyance will lead you through the correct passages, and the object will have a "Ancient Relic Here ->" sign next to it.

Am I playing the game, or is the game telling me how to play?

If the markers can be turned off, that's a good step, but as mentioned, the quests need to be designed without the assumption that you'll use them. If you need the markers to actually find the targets, then turning them off is no good.

Also FWIW, there are mods for Oblivion that make it so you don't know the names of NPCs until you talk to them.

Listening to other people's random banter while we look for a specific person is hardly "interacting with people in a normal manner"...

Also, if somebody just can not take off the shown road and go against the signs, it's their problem not the game's...

Are you sure? Why was there no marker over Arvel's head in the demo? The claw was part of a quest.

If you have quest markers on in Oblivion, there's a big glowing arrow on your compass, in the direction of the NPC you need to talk to. If you stand in a room full of people and rotate your view, the big glowing arrow pans across your compass at the same speed and location as the NPC. It's really blindingly obvious that JoeBob over there is the target. Adding that arrow above his head doesn't really seem like much of a change. Goes from Blindingly Obvious to Blindingly Obvious.

And if you have quest markers off, you don't see it.

So, honestly, I don't see much of an "OMG, WORLD ENDING" change here. Minor difference in the "markers on" case, no difference in the "markers off" case.

-----
...obviously, we have no idea how it works, but (to me) the statements "you can track multiple quests at the same time" and "you can turn off quest markers" lead me to think that the quest log may have check boxes next to each quest. Check the box if you want to track the quest, don't check it if you don't.

But we'll see when it comes out.
