Quest Markers

Post » Wed Aug 26, 2009 8:21 am

I was thinking how back in Oblivion you rarely needed to read your journal, they just showed you EXACTLY where to go.
Honestly it killed the experience of exploring and such.

So what I'm getting at is that most people hate the oblivion system (exact location).

Quest markers are horrible, they really need to address this issue. I preferred Morrowinds style of making you find your own answers to quests.

If Morrowind's journal hadn't been the most miserable way to keep track of quests then it would have been perfect. Although the landscapes needed more variety to put the endless directions in order.

"Go past the rock and turn to the right".

The rock... there're many rocks.

Perhaps how much help the game gives you should be an option in the form of a slider.

Full help it leads by the nose with exact markers and so you never need to read anything.

3/4 level can be it only leads you to the general area/building.

2/4 level it only leads you to the city where your goal is.

1/4 level no pointers at all, you have to read everything to find the goal.

There have been games with such sliders in the past like in System shock 1 you had puzzle and gameplay difficulty sliders and in SiN episodes there was sliders various difficulty and assists. Also racing games do this all the time with driving assists.

The games should require an attention span greater than that of a gold fish, if not literacy, from the player.

This. Even if you make it optional, there's the fact that you would never be able to find the place.

Different games, same debate.

Quests should not feel the need to be streamlined. There is no reason for them to be easy and the harder they are, the more rewarding it is to complete them.

No they're not, they're actually rather useful, especially for people like me. And sometimes in Oblivion, the journal wasn't alway clear.
However they should only show the cell that the person is in.

There should also be an on off option, for people that go 'QUEST MARKERS = FFFFUFUFUFUFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFUUU!!!!1!1!!!one!!'

Eh, I wouldn't be opposed to having a quest marker show the general area. You talk to the quest giver, tells you to go to place X, and may mark it in some general area, so at least you have some kind of visual to go by, like in real life. Though you can refuse to have someone mark it if one wants.

This, however, will mean that quest givers or such WILL need to give actual directions, instead of saying "go to X place," as if they assume you know where the hell to go.

I liked how it was in Oblivion but I do think there should be an option to turn them off if you don't want them on.

The Quest Marker should lead you to the general area, and there should be an option to toggle it on and off. Hell, the Quest Marker can do whatever the hell it wants, as long as I don't have to deal with it!

How did they do quest markers in FNV? I assume they are going to use that game, to a degree, as a sort of baseline.

Yes, but only show the general area. - I like this one.

It would be like someone put an X on your map.

But still make it optional.

I agree. Sadly, games these days, with Bethesda being as bad an offender as anyone, are made either for, or...by people with just so short an attention span. And those who appreciate quality get "Fisto reporting for duty! Please assume the position!"

For all these people who insist the Quest GPS is a necessity...perhaps an option for the character to automatically fast-travel to it, complete the quest, and appear back in town?

(Yeah, can you tell I'm about to heave from all these "Streamline teh gaem, 'cause I don't haz tiem 2 play it!" types? Back when we had smart people rather than "smart phones," the appropriate response to "I don't have time to [activity]" was "Then don't [activity], lackwit!")

I wouldn't mind a quest marker leading you to the general area(ie, the cave where a certain object you need is located), but I don't think we should get a marker to the specific objective(ie, no marker to the item we need to find).

I understand Bethesda's reasons for implementing GPS. In Morrowind the directions were sometimes hard to follow (or plain wrong East = West). However, I did not like a magical compass guiding me to the exact location of an item in a cave I've never visited.

So to me a good comprimise would be for a 'Here, let me mark the location on your map'. This would put the location on your map and provide the compass marker if the quest is selected. However, once at the location you would be on your own to explore and find said item/person.

This could be the 'best of both worlds' in my opinion. A general pointer towards the location, but still the sense of adventure instead of being handholded to the exact x:y:z coordinates of where the GPS meter would start blinking faster and faster the closer I get to my destination.

I'm almost hearing "Turn right at the next intersection; you have arrived at your location" :shakehead:

I don't want to be walked to the cell, I don't want to be walked to my target once I'm in the cell. I don't want to ever see a green arrow-thing on my compass again.

Quest markers ruined Oblivion for me more than fast travel ever could.

Toggle option in the menu, preferably off by default so people new to the series may not discover it, and then they can learn to appreciate a little patience and effort, and join our side of the debate against all things "streamlined, casual, etc" when arguments start for TESVI.

This is completely perfect. They should also have an animation of the Character marking it.

Bah. Part of the charm, says I. Some of us should have been sent T-shirts that said "Yeah, I found the cavern of Milk on my own from the in-game directions, so nyaaaaaahhh! :P "

(No kidding...I actually did)

:D

Not half as scary as what's going through my head...think about all the middlemen and sponsors and crossover ad deals, then tell me how unlikely this really is: "Quest directions in TES V sponsored by the directional wizards at TomTom!" Maybe an in-game item said to be an enchanted stone that enables the GPS Quest Arrow, with a "TES-stylized" TomTom logo.

:P

Optional, please...maybe a "hardcoe mode" of sorts that lets those of us who actually want to play the game turn off all the *cough* "special access" features.

I completely agree with this idea, it's the perfect middle ground imo.

I would just as soon not have quest markers, although I don't see a problem with them if they can be toggled on or off.

Just as long as enough direction is given in game by NPC's that they're not necessary.

I would leave them off.

Yes this.
The worst part of the magic gps system: It tracks people's live location - annoyed me so much during all assassination quests/tasks.

Oblivion was too easy to find the objective. There should be an on and off quest marker option and it should point in the general area.

Well, the journal wasn't clear because of quest markers.
