Quest Starting Dialogue not appearing on custom npc

Post » Mon Jun 18, 2012 3:56 pm

I'm kinda new to this CK and skyrim modding stuff, so I give you some context. I've been following the tutorial quest making on the creation kit wiki for everything except for bendu(although I tried it with bendu and still didn't work). I made my very on npc for that customized fully, with follower faction and a potential marriage faction.

My concern is when I start the game, The thief and the ring on the thief is there, my custom npc is also there, but the only dialogue she has is follower dialogue and nothing about the quests i made. I've redone the quest tutorial five times, with bendu and my custom npc but the dialogue just won't appear.

Anyone know of a solution?

It sounds surprising... the quest-dialog is so simple that there shouldn't be any hiccups. I know what I would do if I were you - I would remove everything related to followers and follower-faction and do the quest-tutorial first, then add the followers-section later. That way you will easier see what causes the problem.

Double check all your work (if you have not already, and if you have, do it again) Make sure your quest>dialog>topic info>conditions are pointing to your NPC. Re-read the http://www.creationkit.com/Bethesda_Tutorial_Creating_an_Actor and the http://www.creationkit.com/Bethesda_Tutorial_Dialogue of the ck.com tutorial and retrace your steps including the http://www.creationkit.com/Bethesda_Tutorial_Basic_Quest_Scripting and http://www.creationkit.com/Bethesda_Tutorial_Quest_Aliases sections.

You probably already did all this, but just in case :run:

I'm currently redoing it all over from step one with no other esp files being active. I'll try to do it step by step so hopefully it works, if it doesn't I don't know anymore lol

my problem is i tried it without the custom npc and just followed the tutorial through including bendu and nothing outside the tutorial. No custom npc or factions just straight tutorial quest. still no dialogue.

I have a similar issue!

Followed the tutorial to the letter creating only what it says to and doing only as instructed and have got as far as having created the topic and yes / no answers and linked them.

In game I have a 'testdummy' character and use it for ... testing! When I talk to Bendu in game and ask 'do you need ...' the 'Why, yes ....' answer from Bendu is skipped (not shown at all) and the two player responses show. When using either player answer, niether of the responses from Bendu activate - the dialogue simply returns to the initial 'do you need ...'.

I had no problem with the 'lokir's Tomb' tutorial - the CK worked great.

I have checked my work over and over. I have completely removed the work from CK and my PC and started over too. The problem still persists!

So, anyone got a solution to this?

This is the second issue I have ran into with the'GSQ01' tutorial though. First issue was easily resolved - but only after many attempts by me then after getting a solution from these forums. The problem centred around a (known) graphics glitch that caused certain text to not appear.

It makes me wonder if there is a fault in the CK or if a step is missed out in the 'GSQ01' tutorial (not by the user).

These tutorials should have been a 'walk in the park' for me as I have some previous experience with similar tools. I am finding that instead of breezing through this particular 'GSQ01' tutorial, I am finding errors and troubleshooting much more than I ought to be and feel this is no fault of my own as I have followed the tutorial exactly and checked my work over making sure it is exactly correct according to the tutorial.

I am no stranger to the trials of 'getting used to' new software and I realise that things can go wrong (that is why I follow the instructions so carefully to avoid error). I have a lot of patience and stay calm throughout using such software as there no point in getting upset or angry. However, I am starting to feel quite dim where the creation kit is concerned - though I'm sure the problems I am encountering are CK based and not user error.

I am not stating CK error as fact, just wondering how it is that I (and apparently many others) can follow tutorials so very carefully and still things go wrong even after checks, restarting and redoing and using past experience and common sense to get things right or troubleshoot.

I have the exact same problem. I restarted from scratch several times, still no luck. I decided to take another approach. I downloaded a few user made quest mods that contained custom dialogue. I figured if they worked I could look at the file, and maybe help troubleshoot my issue. The interesting thing I found was that these mods were broken for me too. The NPCs would not deliver the dialogue in game. I assume they work for other people . I reinstalled the game, updated, and reinstalled CK. I know this doesn't really help you, but it may be a clue.

For goodness sake, someone please give us a way to solve this!

I have just, today, removed all traces I could find of the GSQ01 quest from creation kit, game and saves (D:\Programs\Steam\SteamApps\common\skyrim\Data). Then I ran 'ccleaner' as a general precaution and shut down my PC.

On restarting the PC, I started the CK, loaded 'Skyrim.esm' data and restarted the CK dialogue tutorial.

In the CK, I followed the tutorial exactly to the point where I had created all the dialogue and was ready to start the script part. I checked all my work two or three times over and used 'OK' as instructed and saved my work after every step.

Before starting the script part of the tutorial, I was informed that the dialogue will now work - from the tutorial;

'Now, when the player selects the prompt "Do you need help with anything?", Bendu will say his line and then present the player with another list of choices based on the links from that topic. The choices will be listed in the order they were linked from that topic.'

This is simply not true! In game testing goes something like this;

Scene: Inside Mixwater Mill Workers House.

Actors: Player Character (PC) and Bendu Olo

Conversation:

[E] Talk - Bendu Olo.

(Press 'E' to start conversation.)

PC > Bendu Olo - 'Do you need help with anything?'.

(Press 'E' to submit question.)

NO RESPONSE FROM BENDU OLO.

PC > Bendu Olo {1} - 'Sure, I can do that.'
PC > Bendu Olo {2} - 'Sorry, not right now.'

(Select either option then press 'E' to continue conversation.)

NO RESPONSE FROM BENDU OLO.

PC > Bendu Olo - 'Do you need help with anything?'.

This is always the same when the player character talks to Bendu.

I have CK set to 'Run as Administrator' as someone suggested this in a different CK thread - sorry I did not bookmark it so no link.

I was deliberately following the tutorial as the CK and 'modding' in TES is new to me. However, I have experience with many other PC packages including: 3d modelling, programming / scripting and some game creation tools. In short, I feel I am competent enough to use the CK to construct the basic quests I have in mind. Yet, I find myself stumbling at a stage that really should be 'a walk in the park' for me.

I feel stupid having to ask for help over this matter. I also feel that either the CK is bugged or the tutorial is missing something. I have tried to follow this tutorial now many times and get the same result each time.

I have looked and looked for anything that I or the tutorial may have missed to no avail. :(

PLEASE! I am asking if anyone knows why this is not working, a work around or how to get this to work as it should. If that person is you, please share!

I was so looking forward to using the CK - more, in some ways, than actually playing the game.

I suspect it is working, but either:

1. You have not set subtitles on in Preferences (in Skyrim game) ... In the CK, rhere is a switch in the info settings to FORCE subtitles, which is a better way (the wiki does not mention this)
2. And/or, you have not recorded blank voice files, and so your sub titles are appearing but disappear instantly

It sounds like it is one or both of those, to me anyway.
