Quest Topic and condition problems

I am having problems getting the conditions in topics to work. I have a quest and depending on if the player has a certain item or not (a quest item which he picks up from an enemy), he says different things. For whatever reason, the game seems to ignore what conditions I set up as it just lists the topics anyway. I have tried messing around with it and am now using the following system to try and make it work, here is the system I'm using now.

I am using 2 identical greetings, except 1 has a condition (getitem count ==1 ) and the other greeting doesn't. The greeting that has the condition on it has a result script which adds the topics I want to be avaliable if the player has the specific item. The other greeting without the condition has a result script adding a topic which goes on to say that you need the item etc.

Can you think of why its not working the way it should? Regardless of if i have the item or not it lists all the topics.

EDIT: I am mistaken, it only runs the topis where the condition checks if the player has no item, regardless of if he does or not. That sentance was badly worded, but basically the condition checking to see if the player has an item, it isn't working. It always seems to think the player doesn't have an item, even if he does.
I have tried checking the "run on target" button for the item conditions.
