Question about BAIN and body mods

Post » Thu Apr 21, 2011 10:57 pm

So after much, much research, I’ve successfully installed FCOM and some basic body mods. To make sure I properly learn how everything works and fully understand what I am doing, I’m tackling the installations in chunks. I am currently working on body mods and races.

After doing EVE HGEC in BAIN, I realized how awesome BAIN is and have been trying to install everything I possibly can using it. I’ve read that some people do basically everything in BAIN, but unfortunately, I’m running into difficulty using it for some mods and have a few questions on how BAIN works. I also have a few questions on how my visual mods work together. Here is my mod list and questions:

Body Replacers
1) EVE HGEC – intsalled via BAIN no problem. Awesome.
2) Robert Male body Replacer v.5 – I’ve read you can BAIN (it is 7z) but when I drag it in BAIN doesn’t recognize it.
3) Hi-Res Skin Textures for HGEC – installed using stock installer. Tried to see if I could BAIN it after combining the RARs (I used the 4096 textures). It let me drag it in and gave me the install option, but clearly didn’t give me any checkbox options to choose which parts I wanted.
4) Ozmo’s high res faces – Works awesome, but again couldn’t make BAIN work; used installer. Is there any reason I would use natural faces over this?
5) Luchaire's HGEC Body Seam Reducer - I’m not sure how this works as opposed to
“seamless skins” that some people talk about like http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=28235 Any recommendations?

Races and Hair packs etc.
To sum things up here, I have no idea what is going on. The mods I am interested in are:
1) Cobl races and race balancing (better than RBP?)
2) Race balancing project (this or COBL balancing?)
3) Beautiful people – does this not work with Cobl races or RBP? Am I better off just getting ren’s for flexibility? Why exactly does beautiful people not play nice with another race mod? Will all other race mods not work with each other?
4) Ren’s (does it work with COBL and COBL race balancing, do I need if I have cobl)?
Babe hair, Soya4 hairpack etc. – will these conflict with each other or other mods?

Regarding BAIN, is there a way for me to make most mods work as BAIN? If not, do I BAIN when possible, then OMOD if not, then manual install if neither work? How do I manage a mod list including both BAIN and OMOD? As for the race mods, can I only ever use one mod, or is beautiful people just particularly unfriendly?

Body mods are really a pain to deal with - especially older ones. I've had to repackage all but eve.

And older ones where the alternate textures and files are embedded in the data/textures & data/Meshes folder are especially annoying. (how that ever became vogue I'll never know)

So it comes down to looking at each file and seeing where it goes then repackaging in BAIN format.

For instance I don't use Roberts 5 only 4 and here is what the complete roberts 4 BAIN package has:
Spoiler
Roberts Male 4-BAIN │ ├[00 Roberts Male v4 Core] ├[01 Beautiful People Compatibility] ├[05 Optional Idles] ├[06 Human Head] ├[07 Orc Head] ├[08 Better Necklines] ├[10 Average nvde BASE] ├[11 Average Cothed - Pants 1] ├[11 Average Cothed - Pants 2] ├[11 Average Cothed - Pants 3] ├[20 Muscular nvde BASE] ├[21 Muscular Clothed - Pants 1] ├[21 Muscular Clothed - Pants 2] ├[21 Muscular Clothed - Pants 3] ├[21 Muscular Clothed - Pants 4] ├[21 Muscular Clothed - Pants 5] ├[22 Muscular Sandals] ├[30 Slender nvde BASE] ├[31 Slender Clothed - Pants 1] ├[31 Slender Clothed - Pants 2] ├[31 Slender Clothed - Pants 3]

So it is work - especially if you get into small beauty tweaks.

Beautiful people I think has errors in the esp and missing resources which cause things like hair and eyes to get stuck on one in character creation - I forgot a bit fuzzy. RBP is the complete answer and if entertaining it then you don't need COBL Races which is RBP watered down.

A way to get the higher resolution textures for placing them inside a BAIN install is to extract them to the default folder C\Program Files\Bethesda Softworks\Oblivion, and move them into another mod. I agree with Psymon about choosing RBP, and I will also recommend LAME and Integration-The Stranded Light as mods you should also look at.
EDIT I remembered an issue you are going to have because of Ozmo's face textures - You are going to end up with mismatched head and body textures because Males and Females have different body textures, but share the same face texture.

I'd not install into the data folder and instead into a temp folder.

Most days I have use 7zip and open the archive and then just drag and drop the files into a BAIN ready folder structure - gets real easy after the first few times.

So it sounds like I need to repackage everything that doesnt work natively myself. Is it worth the effort? I don't plan on replacing EVE, robert's, the skin textures, or face textures. If it makes sense to though, I'm sure I can find a tutorial. Is there a specific reason you use Robert's v4 instead of v5?

Any feedback on Ozmo's vs natural faces? I see that natural has a ton of downloads but it looks to me like Ozmo's flat out looks better. What about the "seamless skins"?

I think I'll plan on RBC. I'll do Ren's and the other parts of beautiful people that I want separately.

What about managing lists containing both BAIN and OMOD?

So I could move the body and face textures into HGEC and package them all? I guess I'll have to check out the Ozmo's textures for that problem. Maybe that is the reason to use Natural? I've been looking at LAME and straded light. I'll definitely take your recommendation and install them.

I run the installer for Ozmo textures to a custom directory than make a bain, just for those choices. I keep these pretty static. Same with faces.

Seamless, I use OFF. So in my order I install:

Body seam reducer
OFF (Optimized facegen files http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=35487 )
Roberts
HGEC base
HGEC 4096 body textures
EVE stock equipment replacer

I do not install the hirez faces as OFF makes them pretty nice. Looks good.

All it takes is time. Something to do when there are no big updates.

I jumped on BAIN when it first came out - http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/957424-custom-bain-projects/ was what 2 years ago. Surprised it hasn't been purged yet.

http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1084204-bain-mod-installation-projects/ is better though for information ... but I've been waiting for more stuff on wizards before I add to it again.

I remember that. That is what got me into BAIN. I remember a thread where people were posting custom BAIN projects for texture replacers.

So I should probably learn how to repackage stuff into BAIN. Interestingly enough, like Peter, I started trying BAIN after reading your post. Looks like things are coming full circle. Cool compilations - it seems you do them specifically for the race you wish to play. I might get to that point someday:) F-ine is very...detailed. I think it might look better than the HGEC ones I'm using. Maybe I should try them in game.

As for my other question, I'm referring to a mod list where you install some things via BAIN and others through OMOD. How do you put the list in order? Do you do it all via OBMM?

Sorry not following this.

I install 99% of mods with BAIN. I only use OBMM for OBSE plugins, shaders, and mods that have nifty omod scripts for ini files like TheNiceOne makes.

The list I posted is from the list packages command in BAIN.

I install 99% of mods with BAIN. I only use OBMM for OBSE plugins, shaders, and mods that have nifty omod scripts for ini files like TheNiceOne makes.

The list I posted is from the list packages command in BAIN.

Oh, I understand the confusion now - pronoun miscommunication :). I didn't mean you specifically, I meant in general, if one installs several mods with BAIN and several OMODs via OBMM and the load order needs to be juggled, would i do it via OBMM or Wrye? It seems the simple answer is for me to figure out how to convert everything to BAIN.

It doesn't really matter which one you use for managing your load order, as load order is not affected by (or to be confused with) installation order.
I for one was always installing mods in OBMM (what wasn't an OMOD from the start I simply made one), mainly because there was no BAIN yet back then, closed OBMM and started BOSS, then opened OBMM back up to rearrange some plugins in my load order BOSS didn't know where to put them, closed OBMM, started Wrye Bash and recompiled the bashed patch. Done.
I think I was prefering OBMM to manage my load order only because I haven't found a convenient way to do this in Wrye Bash back then. As it clearly can be done in both it's just a matter of personal preference I guess.

Bash mods tab offers drag and drop load order adjusting much like OBMM. I recommend one over the other but if using OBMM - turn lock times off in bash. actually with BOSS you don't ever really need it on.

BAIN also offers drag and drop of archives for install order.

If the mod is only esm esp shaders obse plugins (no textures, meshes, or anything in loose folders except ini) then OBMM is fine for it. It only has a problem if installing replacers for meshes, textures, sounds, etc. BAIN is best or that.

My only OBMM install is the Darnified UI and nighteye replacer. Everything else in BAIN.

I have quite an easy walkthrough for that in the Installers Creation pdf of Wrye Bash Pictorial Guide. :)

Reference the OP; Alienslof used to host a BAIN of Rob Male v5 beta (which was put together by Tomlong) on TESNexus - But Slof had a bit of a confrontation with the site owner and felt un-appreciated (on top of the years of immature abuse she has received from narrow minded members) - So she has unfortunately withdrawn from TESNexus.

Also unfortunately, I believe she had exclusive permission (or one of very few) from Robert to host his files. Bit of a double whammy. I have asked on her own site if Tomlongs BAIN variant of Rob v5 can be re-hosted on her own site - No reply yet.

I'll read through the BAIN conversion tutorials. Should I be able to convert things like Robert's v5 and other complex mods without trouble? Or is it complex to the extent that I won't be able to put the pieces together?

I've yet to find the creation of BAIN conversion files take less time than just doing it by hand their concept is for others to convert.

I don't think they are advanced enough to handle the level of embedded files that Roberts have. Better to just get permission to upload a BAIN ready version.

1) Cobl races and race balancing (better than RBP?)

Cobl Races is basically RBP light, so it depends on whether you want RBP's other features or not as it's not only cosmetic changes in it.

3) Beautiful people – does this not work with Cobl races or RBP? Am I better off just getting ren’s for flexibility? Why exactly does beautiful people not play nice with another race mod? Will all other race mods not work with each other?

I'd recommend staying away from BP because how it is set up means that it is incompatible with other cosmetic mods. From the RBP readme:

Important notice regarding Beautiful People: BP is using the Elaborate Eye mesh (former bash tag Eye-E), but has changed it's filepath to the default Eye mesh (former bash tag Eye-D). This causes numerous problems. One of them is that using it as eye mod for the bashed patch can result in very strange oddities. Workaround: Load it always before the core file, RBP's installation file will fix BP's messed up files, but by doing this will break parts of BP. With this filepath change there's nothing I can do except mentioning this workaround. This has caused me enough support grief.

Thanks for the pictorial guide! It was very helpful. Is there a good place to go to find out more details? I followed what you did on the repackage, but have some questions like on the "why" behind some things - I don't like not understanding things :)
1) do you only every create high level and "menu" folders? Are there any other types?
2) not sure why xmls were moved (probably because i don't know what they do)
3) how are the .ini files made? why did you upload some separately? what did moving the text files in the repackage do?
.

I used bad terminology here I think. I don't want to create a BCF, I want to repackage Robert's and other mods into a BAIN friendly format and wonder if it will prove too complex. The simple ones are well, simple, but the complex ones look like they can get messy. The goal for me is to BAIN everything since it appears to be the most flexible method to add/remove things in the future.

Advice well taken. I'm going with RBP and won't touch BP.
