Question about Daggerfall..

Post » Thu May 03, 2012 7:47 am

Well I just got Daggerfall.

After dying about 833434 times in the starter dungeon, I finally got out. Well, It told me to go to Daggerfall via fast travel, so I did. Well. Uh.

What now? I have no quest log and no way to figure out what to do next lol..I'm still level 1 also, what does it take to level up? How do I see my level progress?

You don't see level progress, it just happens as you increase your chosen skills (all 3 primaries, top 2 of the 3 majors, and top 1 of the 6 minors). As for what to do now, well, you'll find out something soon (it will come to you and I'm being vague for a reason). In the mean-time, just don't leave the province of Daggerfall and maybe go see if someone at the castle, in a store, or at a tavern has some job or dungeon raid for you to do. Sell your excess loot and maybe equip yourself with a few necessities, while you're at it. If you want, you could join one of the broader factions (such as the Mages Guild or Fighters Guild, if they suit you). Welcome to Daggerfall... you're on your own.

Thanks for the info, Seti18. So just stay around in Daggerfall? I keep talking to people on the street and they always say "go ask someone else" or something like that.

Well, if one wanted to start the main quest right away, just wait until one is level 3 and up. Before then, do some random quest here and there from merchants or guilds and take one time to learn how to play. At some point, you will get letters at a random that one can do the main quest from there.

Well I just tried to do a guild quest, a quest to kill a werewolf in the Cabal of El something, fighters guild quest. The FIRST QUEST. The werewolf thing kills me in one shot lol. I don't get this. How can I level up if the first quest in the game are one shotting me, that doesn't make sense to me.

What Qawsed Asap said... as for where to go, if you're adamant on sticking around for the main quest, just don't leave the Daggerfall region, as getting back may be costly and too time-consuming. You can leave the city of Daggerfall and be fine, but the general Daggerfall region is a central place to stay until the main quest's early stages find its way to you. Until then, yeah, just do some quests (talking to people on the street won't help unless you're looking for directions) for some people or join a guild and do something for them. As for the werewolf quest, sometimes they'll give you something a bit too difficult, so just decline those. Mostly, if you can just find some good dungeons to raid, you should have a good base of wealth and level gains to start making your way about the world more confidently. If you can use it, I urge you to learn mark and recall and buy a cart to store some loot in. Raiding random crypts in Daggerfall (on your map) can also get you some paltry loot and perhaps a map leading to a larger dungeon.

Well, so far I've mustered just under 1000 gold, I've cleared like 3 crypts and I've waited for DAYS in the inns, and still no letter for the main quest at all. I don't get it. >_>

It's a fun game to be sure, it just seems like pulling teeth every time I do something. It's a bit irritating so far, but it's still fun like I said.

Also...how the freak do I buy stuff? It took me 8 years to walk to this weaponsmith..yet he doesn't sell ANYTHING? I can't buy new weapons or armor? I only get the "SELL" and "TALK" options from EVERY single person in this city..where do I buy stuff?

The quests are randomly assigned. You can also decline them. Try getting local Rat-killing quests to start.

And yeah - look at the shop shelves to buy stuff. If you need cash, go to the bank and take out a 150k loan.

I'm still confused how to start the MQ. I'm still getting no ketter despite having spent weeks in game in the city. I'm level two thus far, as there is nothing to fight to level me up -_-

Except for "The Odd Blades" (a weapon shop that usually has good weapons) I've always thought that Daggerfall city was a lousy place to hang out.

You should get a letter from Lady B about 2 weeks after getting out of the starter dungeon. Check the Misc. part of your inventory for letters. Other letters will show up at levels 3 and 5. (You'll only get letters after right clicking on the map icon).

Those crypts that you "cleared" reset as soon as you leave. Just re-enter them to find more enemies to fight.
Or you can rest while in the wilderness. Enemies might, or might not, show up.
Other than that you'll have to do quests in order to find enemies.

Is there a way to find out how long its been since I started?

Btw, is raising hp done by simply leveling? Or is there a stat I need to boost manually?

The "I" key tells you the date and time, but not the year. If the first quest is still in your log, you know when you got that, and can do the subtraction.

HP per level is set by your class, and you only get them at the level-ups. (Edit: Endurance will adjust hp gain per level, but not much compared to class differences.)

I picked the warrior class, nord. So ill probably get a good amount of hp per level.

Thanks for all the advice guys, this game has zero learning curve lol, so one has to ask questions.

As Scow2 said, you can decline quests.

If the quests are not part of the main quest (i.e., guild quests and quests from random people in town), there's no penalty for declining a quest: saying no to a non-main quest won't affect your status with the guild or person who gave you the quest. So if a quest looks too difficult, just say no and look for another one more within your abilities.

But when you're offered a quest that's part of the main quest, you only get one chance at it. If you reject a quest that's part of the main quest, or fail to complete it successfully, you won't get another chance at it. And (in most cases), that will mean you won't be able to finish the overal main quest of the game, because the main quest is actually a series of quests: you have to successfully complete each one in order to progress to the end of the overall main quest.

So it's a good idea to periodically make permanent saves that you don't write over, so you can backup and start over if you fail or reject a quest that's part of the main quest. If you don't have a save to start over from, you'll need to restart the game if you foul up something in the main quest. Keeping a series of backups of your save game directory is an excellent idea.

A stock Warrior gets 10 - 20 HP per level up.(+1 for each 10 points your Endurance is over 50).

A lot of your questions can be answered here: http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Daggerfall:Daggerfall
Here is a good FAQ: http://www.gamefaqs.com/pc/29065-the-elder-scrolls-chapter-ii-daggerfall/faqs/50211

Warning: As a Warrior you will essentially only have the magic available from enchanted items you find as random loot. This makes the game very difficult for a noob.

Suggestion: Start over with a custom class High Elf (who are immune to paralysis).

Magic for a Warrior's not exactly impossible, but you do need to get some help onto the first rung of the ladder. There are quite a few standard classes with all magic skills in miscellaneous, and only half their intelligence as spell points, so this applies to all of those.

You need to buy a spell you can cast (i.e below about twenty-something spell points) and get your level in that skill high enough to join a Faction that can give you magic training, preferably the Mages Guild, as you can make your own practice spells there. I believe Buoyancy is the cheapest to buy/cast and this will let you grind up Thaumaturgy to the minimum level to join (22). That can take a lot of time for a character with few spell points. You can then make a targeted Destruction spell that will help you increase that skill every time you rest, as well as buying training in another. Temples may let you join based on your weapon skills and give you training in magical ones, so they're another way to get started with magic.

You'll never become much of a caster, but once you can raise your skills enough to for them to let you enchant your weapons and armor, you can become a better fighter. Being able to Levitate, Waterwalk/breathe (a combined spell is useful) and Teleport are almost essential, but you can get those on "cast when used" magic items, so it's not strictly required for you to be able to cast them yourself. Carrying items with spell defense will also help you against casters. You can find them, or make your own.

Trust me you'll want at least the school of restoration, it's pretty much the only way to restore health mid fight, apart from having a magic item or health potion (which from my experiences are quite rare)

and http://www.tesguides.com/tes2/ helped me out a lot in the beggining (and still does some times)

Might I suggest making a custom class that stacks/exploits the antimagic disadvantages (Lower Magery in Darkness/Light, Unable to use Magic in Darkness/Light, Unable to Regen Spell Points, for 5 MASSIVE Disadvantages(, and takes advantages that improve survivability, then? (30 HP/Level, immunity or at least resistance to spells and elemental damage - especially Shock and Paralysis)

Rapid Healing's a must-have advantage - It cuts healing time down from 3 days to 3 hours.

If you don't want to use spells, I strongly recommend joining one of the temples that sells potions. That will give you access to healing, protective, and utility magic that you'll need to get through the game,

If I remember right, there are two temples that don't sell potions. So before picking one to join, walk around inside and see if the temple has a potion-selling merchant in the building. Once you join, you'll need to do quests for the temple and advance a few ranks to access the potion seller.

For a pure fighter, joining a knightly order is a good way to get a free house. Every mission they send you on is a dungeon crawl though. Nobles in the palace tend to give easy delivery missions, or you can ask anyone about "work". Getting a cart is very helpful too, buy one from a general store. If you do get that loan from the bank, spend it on training.
