Question about Dremoras:

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 12:02 pm

The Dremora where much more talkative in Battlespire. I read some of the dialog over on TIL, and the dremora are quite intriguing! You have to kill them, but at least they taunt you and scheme. In Morrowind, the non-hostile ones just bad-mouth your character. In Oblivion, they are depicted as mindless demons incapable of coherent speech.

That's partially explained by the Dremora who gives you the Bands of the Chosen. He mentions they don't usually speak to mortals because they'd have nothing to say to their inferiors, but since the CoC was a true warrior and slaughtered so many of his Kyn, he was happy to speak to the hero.

I'm not big on the Darth Maul faces and irremovable over-the-top armor, but Oblivion dremora did fit in with Morrowind's, and fighting/talking to them was one of the better parts of the MQ.

Makes sense. While Oblivion's main problem was it's floating bits (they make refrences that are really single things for themselves, an illusion of lore) it has been previously established that dremora have a complex warrior culture (think modern romanticised ideal of samurai on steroids, I guess).

I actually thpought the aesthetic for dremora fit pretty well. The differences were already stated here: Morrowind's dremora were fighters, but they weren't fighting a war, they were just beating at me with those damn cursed maces. In Oblivion, they were in full kit and gear, even maybe war paint type stuff for intimidation.

You can actually understand what they say...and what about the Dremora in Paradise? Or the one in a Thieves Guild quest that asks Hieronymous Lex to stand down?

They were soldiers in an invading army in Battlespire, and they had plenty to talk, even if it meant insulting you and such.

To be fair, Battlespire was pretty much already taken, You just arrived late. Also, the very fact that the hero of battlespire survives for more then twenty minutes shows he's a warrior worth some degree of respect.

Ya, they probably eat for fun, sleep to heal wounds? Maybe not. Read books, I think it's hard to get books in some places in Oblivion, but maybe some do.
There seems to be limited information on dremoras though, but I would like to know more.

Nothing new from me.

Dremoras probably eat and drink, at least for some ritualistic purpose or refreshment or restoration (blood and magicka fountains).
Reading, again probably is they key word, they probably read (orders - they are soldiers after all, killing time in tombs :), learning magic...).
Sleeping, I guess not, why should they? They aren't low life form like mortals :P.

Well, in Daggerfall you had to know Daedric to talk to Daedra. If you knew Daedric there was a chance that Daedra would not attack you.

I don't know about Battlespire, but your guy in Morrowind and Oblivion deffinetly don't know Daedric. At least not game technically.

Just because they are immortal doesnt mean they are forever in supreme physical condition. Id assume theyd still have to eat to rpvide their bodys with tools necessary to perform. If they dont eat they dnt die, but they arent as strong and aware. My guess.

the dremora's have a alphabet, its confusing though. They need it to record spells and such. And, I have had dremora's say they were going to "eat your flesh and drink your blood! BLARGGHH!!", so yeah they eat. probably don't need to.

Interesting stuff here, thanks.

What's the life span of a dremora? Or if they reincarnate into another body, what's the life span of a dremora body in a natural cycle?

What would a dremora serving under Mehrunes Dagon respectfully refer to him as?

What does a lesser dremora refer to a dremora lord as?

I'd say:

1) Probably immortal

2) Lord Dagon, most likely. That's what his worshippers call him.

3) I don't know. Perhaps by their caste titles? The higher castes seem to do the same to their inferiors.

Some of the Dremora you fight shout "KYN AND VALKYN" while swinging their weapons at you.

"Kyn" refers to "The People." "Valkyn" probably refers to the high rank of "Valkynaz" which is something akin to a Duke or Lord. The Dremora Lord and upper nobility are probably referred to as "The Valkyn" by lower ranks, and also by others of the same rank.

Well, they can obviously read and write. At least one wrote a letter "Spirit of the Daedra"

"The Scamps have small thoughts, and cannot fear greatly.

The Vermai have no thoughts, and cannot fear.

The Dremora have deep thoughts, and must master fear to overcome it"

Also says "Your flesh is sweet, and the chase is diverting" so I assume they do eat.

I call Morrowhiner on you!

Ever talked to Kathutet?

He was awesome. I spent the main quest wrecking faceless daedric towers, and he actually names the one I destroyed. I thought, wow, I've really done the same to their tower as what tehy did to Kvatch.

In Oblivion, they are depicted as mindless demons incapable of coherent speech.

To be fair, half of what they say is in their language. Like a daedric Brit on holiday: "MONSIUER! AVEZ VOUS THE FISH AND LE CHIPS!"

They have many ranks, UESP lists them. They have Kynreeves, which act like our sheriffs.

As for eating, I thought they spent most of their time as intangible spirits (hence the lack of furniture) and have no need for food, only assuming a human form for battle.

I'd imagine it uneccesary for them to eat, but rather something of a pleasure for themselves to indulge in. Other than the fact that they can be killed, dremora are unlike mortal men; they're of a metaphysical sense of being.

I am acutely aware of this already.

I was merely commenting on the fact they make a point of mentioning Valkyn as well as Kyn. We know that "Kyn" refers to the Dremora race overall, so "Valkyn" probably refers to the rank of Dremora we refer to as Dremora Lords...so basically their battlecry is "People and Lords!" or "For the People and Lords!" when they try to kill you, which would make sense considering the feudal "dark samurai" image.

Consider the possibility that kyn in this case refers to their race as a nation sort of thing, the translation could be rendered "king and country".

Alright, I'm still unclear about the ranks thing, so I'll probably not try to use these specifics in my mod's writings.

I have absolutely no concept of TES timeline, how to read it, how to write it, etc. Is there a decent link out there to point me to a crash course in it? Is it difficult to understand?

How long have the dremoras been in existence?

Would a dremora lower than a 'lord' address a 'lord' dremora as 'lord (name)' ? Just lord?

What is it exactly that separates a dremora from a dremora lord?

The Lowest Dremora Lords are the Markynaz. They are the Grand dukes of Dremora and are on Mehrunes Dagons Council of Lords. They are also the second strongest Dremora. Their bosses are called Valkynaz. They are Dagon's elite personal guard. They are the strongest dremora and are the toughest generic enemies in TES IV: Oblivion.

Dremora Lords are separate from regular dremora because they are tougher and hold more responsibility.

As far as I know there is no knowledge of how old the Dremora have existed as they are immortal daedra. The daedric lords have been around since time began and so it is unkown when the immortal dremora came into existence.
As for how they address each other, they probably don't. The Highest ranking officer probably just points or says 'you' and the rest just shut up and follow their orders.
As for how they would address Dagon though...
