Question about hunting and it's relation to money

Post » Sun Dec 11, 2011 12:30 pm

So i'm getting Skyrim for sure. I've played Oblivion and i must say, i was super excited for the hunting in the massive world but alas, it proved to not be worth the effort. i mostly found wolves that i could get about 8 gold for. and bears i found rare. In Red Dead Redemtpion hunting was the main source of money.

So my question is, do you get some decent money from hunting unlike in oblivion?

Thanks in advance.

In a word, no.

In a few words, it's more enjoyable and rewarding than Oblivion by far, but don't expect to make a whole bunch of money from it. Unless you have some perks in Speech and can sell the hides / leather for a decent price.

You can use the animal hides to make leather. With leather, you can make leather straps. The leather straps are a little bit more valuable, I think. With leather straps you can improve leather armor and get more for you money. When you increase your blacksmith skills and take some of the perks, you can make dragon scale armor and heavy armor from dragon bone. In other words the stuff you can make gets more expensive.

Hunting, like cooking is useless.

It's a shame there isn't more substance to either, because the game animals in the game are quite impressive.

Yes, the view distance is much better. You can definitely RP a hunter, it's just not as profitable as some other styles of money making.

You won't become a rich lord hunting but you can make money...here are some of the ways;

1). Selling the pelts,

2) Using the pelts to make leather...different hides provide different amounts of leather...that can be sold or used to make armor.

3) For some strange reason (mostly wolves I think) a dead animal may have a jewel or jewry on their person....maybe the doggie ate a bard not paying attention.

You don't need to hunt in order to make money. There are much easier, faster, and even legit ways to get rich quick.

Hunting Mammoths and Giants can be fairly profitable, once you can do it

However the loot isn't just animal pelts but also gold and maybe weapons and armour

At a certain level I started finding silver rings, soul gems, etc on animals that I looted increasing the profit. However it still is pretty miniscule money. But hey, if you are RPing how much could a hunter really have pulled down in that era???

It's also worth mentioning species-specific alchemy reagents come from hawks, antlered animals, mountain lions, bears, mammoths, giants, and probably some other things.

The herbivores on that list spook at something like max archery range if you're not hidden, and run away with an evasive pattern that's hard to hit. So if you decide you do want to rack up a rack of racks, it will require some actual gameplay.

Mushroom hunting is somehow more profitable. Pick a mushroom, add salt, mix in a mortar. Sell for 1000 septims.

You could also cave dive for profit. My last character was a Hunter who spent a lot of time just walking around killing whatever moved, then clearing out whatever I came across. Easy to stock pile soul gems/smithing gear as well

Cooking and Food in general are absolutely useless without a hardcoe mode... Srsly Beth, what did you guys think?

Hunting on the other hand is a great way to get crafting materials. I got to around 80 Smithing simply by using all the pelts I hunted.

I have not noticed any rich hunters in the game. So, it makes sense that one would not make a bunch of money from it.

However, like Cooking and other things in the game, there may not always be a game related purpose, but they are there for a role related purpose. There are some people who treat these games like a sim life game. They just live in the world and their character does not play the game. People made some impressive mods for the last two games just so they could live in the world and not play the game. Necessities of Morrowind and Oblivion are the ones I am thinking of. This is just Bethesda incorporating these ideas from the Modding Community into the game.

I hear traders will pay good money for Mamoth tusks and white wolf pelts go for 15 gold at the least.

i hunted a lot in skyrim, the trick is to also pick flowers, fish butterflies and everything else you see.. when your a higher level you get sabre cats as well as bears in the woods.

Yeah, hunting isn't going to be the fastest way to make money, but it's a lot more satisfying and enjoyable than spending ridiculous amounts of time chopping wood or mining ore to make the same amount.

For standard game, mammoths are your best return with their tusks, but they take quite a bit of punishment and can easily kill you at low levels. Best to either utilize sneak attacks with the bow and try to use your ranged damage output as much as you can as quickly as you can.

Bears and sabre cats also make for good returns on their pelts, just make sure you've got decent armor rating before taking them on. Early game, I played a glass cannon thief, and I had to stay away from bears for a long time because I could not damage them quickly enough before they closed in and took me out in two swipes. By the time I was able to take down bears without trouble, I'd fought my first sabre cats and found that they were a non-issue by that point as well. I figure they're about as strong as bears, just faster.

I'd sell off the pelts for sabre cats and bears, and take the pelts you get from wolves and everything else to the tanning rack to make leather and leather strips. To make some weapons, you'll need leather and leather strips, and the same for some kinds of armor.

And be wary of Spriggans in some forested areas. They are often found as part of the trees, and only emerge once you blunder through their area, so you can easily be taken by surprise by one. The other thing to watch out for with them is that they can rally all creatures to their aid in a given area around them, and can turn things really ugly, and sometimes even a little bizarre. I once killed one that had rallied several goats in the area, and the goats surrounded me, screeching a most ghastly noise that actually scared me to hear. But I'll take goats screeching at me rather than several bears and sabre cats.

Like another said, take the time to pick plants while out hunting. You'd be amazed at how much you can eventually accumulate in some plants, and use to make potions to sell off at the alchemist.

I have been able to run down elk and kill them with a sword. Made me feel like an Elven Tarzan.
