It's to do with the lag/delay and the lunge of melee they added in this game for something like, easiness reasons, bleh
Right! Since all the lag is seen not clientside but server side you get this effect called interpolation. If you jump 30ft in the air, but the enemy still sees you as on the ground on his screen, he'll send a request to the server to melee you and that will register regardless of where you are.
So maybe you are using melee in the air, it just doesn't look that way on the screen
