Question about a 'movie screen'

Post » Fri Apr 09, 2010 4:23 pm

Ok, you guys know when you take the GOAT and those images are scrolling on the projecter screen as the questions are asked. Well, would it be possible to do that with a bink? For my mod, since it adds a large company to the game, I figured it would be really cool if I make some 'Commercials' that the company would have run before the war. Then you can que them on a computer, and they project onto the screen on the wall next to you. How were those pictures shown? Was it an animation of the textures sliding across or something? I have a feeling this is WAY out of my league right now, but it would be super awsome if I could get it to work with everyones help.

I don't believe that the game has any functionality for embedding a window within the game world; a window that you could then play your bink on. It would be cool, though. I think those slides are an animation of the slides that come with the game. If you were a good animator, you might be able to fake it.

One of the so many megaton house mods added working tvs with actual movies. Not sure how they worked, but the maker unckuded .bink files if i recal correctly.

http://cs.elderscrolls.com/constwiki/index.php/Basic_Animation_Tutorial has a bit on animating textures. I don't know whether it applies to Fallout 3, but it might be a good starting point.

That and looking at the meshes/textures etc that Bethesda used to make the GOAT slideshow :).

Sorry not to be more helpful, but I don't know anything about this stuff myself. I have a vague idea that the 'working tv' mod used a script to swap in a whole bunch of textured planes one after the other... Uh, I don't know, too hazy. I've probably remembered completely wrong :(.

Do either of you know the name of that mod by chance? I'd love to take a look at it.

No, sorry, but the description for http://www.fallout3nexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=4818 mentions "New television with simple effect on the screen, the more mature generation amongst us will remember this effect, you might even see one of the AI banging on the TV but that's a random thing, oh and I added something else to the tv just for laffs, while I endeavor to keep the fallout atmosphere, sometimes ya just gotta lighten the mood."

Might be a good starting point?

Actually, just try an advanced search on Nexus for 'tv' in the description :). Lots of miss-hits, but...

If I remember correctly NillaCakester showcased just what you are after; a random floating video screen.

Not sure if this ever got RELZ, but a PM wouldn't hurt :P

Hmm alright. I will attempt to contact Nilla and inquire about that. It would be an incredibly fantastic thing to have in my mod so I sure hope it works.

The GOAT is a slide show. Each slide has its own animation group to call to get it to show up.

I have been experimenting with the slides and find that texture sets do not work, you have to hunt down and find the correct texture in the file in order to change the slide visual itself.

Ok, but could you make it play a movie easily? Or would that be incredibly hard and take forever? I have sent Nilla a message so maybe he can help.

Its a slide show... :ahhh:
Slides are still pictures that you show for a few seconds to a minute 'each' and tell a story with that still picture showing.

Well yea. So for it to do a movie it would have to swap slides rediculously fast, and would pobably look crappy... Hmm maybe I will just make some kind of educational safety video the company would have showed its workers. Its not nearly as good, but could still help immersion alot.

http://www.fallout3nexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=4688 mod turns the cinema in Seward square into a functioning cinema that plays movies. Might be worth a look.

I dont think those are actually playing videos on an object in the game. You select the movie to watch and a full screen bik movie plays.

As for the slide show going any faster, that is not the way the slideshow NIF mesh was set up. Its animated to 'slide' the images in, and there are only 11 images you can place on each slideshow mesh.

Oh well... pftt... I am downloading the movie thing now, so I did not know that it just plays the full screen bik -_- Maybe thats just what I will have to do, but to make it seem fancier and more real, I can make it have the camera like zoom into the screen, then play it, then zoom out so it looks like its the bik playing on the wall but it isnt. That would be pretty simple... hmm Ok thanks everyone I think that is just what I will do.
