Question about polearms

Post » Sat Apr 10, 2010 9:00 am

Will there be any? tried searching couldnt find a thing. Well you know polearms like poleaxes, glaives and that sort of weapons, because from what ive head spears are out but does that mean all polearms will be out?

Nobody's really sure. Some Concept art hints at Polearm weapons, and there's no reason within the game's systems as we understand it, that polearms couldn't be fit in (For example, in Oblivion, they didn't make sense in either the blade or blunt category, but they make sense in Skyrim with the Two handed skill).

Todd has confirmed "Spears in the traditional sense" will not be in Skyrim, but that's a rather cryptic workaround of just saying "no". An optimist would appraise that as tantamount to confirmation of Halberds, poleaxes and perhaps Glaives, but only Todd and the Bethesda people know.

My advice, assume they won't, and be pleasantly surprised if they are.

"Not in the traditional sense".

Swinging polearms will be in, stabbing polearms such as spears aren't.

My advice: My gut feeling says they'll be in, and the evidence supports it. Be happy! :celebration:

Or you can be a pessimist. How depressing.... :shakehead:

There were so huge discussions about this before and it ended with some Bethesda developer stating that they have never said polearms would be in, but at the same time never said polearms wouldn't be in, if I remember correctly.

I don't get how they would make polearms look natural with the screen size. I mean in the gameplay trailer, you couldn't even see the tips of swords. So polearms would look Really awkward imo

Actually, it sounds like what he means by this is that throwing spears won't be in, but that doesn't necessarily mean all spears. As for polearms, they haven't even been mentioned, so no one knows. But it's kinda unlikely.

I just noticed something in one of the screenshots http://cdnstatic.gamesas.com/akqacms/files/tes/screenshots/DraugrGroup_wLegal.jpg one of them holds a weapon like your average 2handed axe and the one in the back holds with such a wider grip, maybe thats a polearm of sorts like a bardiche http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bardiche what do yhou think

would love to see polearms:

Those are some great examples

Also, how would you kill a mammoth without a javelin, its how they've been killing them for ages.. Though make javelins more rare than arrows and they break

The following was stated in a thread that was saying polearms were confirmed.

Two things on that PC Gamer article

1) They probably should have said two-handed weapons. As Todd has mentioned in other places, there are no spears
2) You do not have the ability to wield two shields…. that’s inaccurate”

If there were gonna be polearms in the game in any form I would think he would have just stayed silent on that matter.

Here is a http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1176076-polearms-confirmed/ to the thread so you can get the context in which it was stated.

I sure hope so... I do love polearms, though for various multiple reasons swords are just the most popular melee weapon, followed by hammers and axes. And polearms are relatively unpopular for some strange reason, so many games have swords or sword like weapons, but no polearms. They have long reach, actually hit pretty hard due to their length, and look elegant all at once. And in a unique non cliche way at that. Polearms don't get enough appreciation.

Someone will probably make a mod to add polearms either way, though it would be very nice if Bethesda included them this time. I remember Morrowind had polearms which made me very happy, and I eagerly used them for my characters a long time ago.

he said specifically no SPEARS, but he never said no halberds or diquexes. they've never really clarified, so we'll just have to see.

Right, but he did say the chart that said polearms should not have. Granted it's still a bit ambiguous, but I'm betting they're not in.

is what people refer too when they say pole arms are confirmed.

Todd has confirmed "Spears in the traditional sense" will not be in Skyrim, but that's a rather cryptic workaround of just saying "no".

1. because axes in blunt weapons made just as much sense

2. this is what I thought when I heard todd say that there would not be any in the traditional sense in response to a question about spears and that sounds exactly like some one trying to suggest there might be something kinda like spears while saying spears are not in to keep the spear people happy, instead people are now expecting pole arms.
