My understanding is this. There was resistance, which was suppressed with extreme brutality, protesters and rioters are shot on sight. News of the atrocities increase unrest on the American home front, which is also suppressed with extreme brutality, causing an increase of mutinies in the military.

From what we know.. America just started taking what they wanted from Canada after Canada refused to help America in their war against the Chinese. China having invaded Alaska in 2066.

Canada wasn't officially annexed until 2077. But yeah in the years between 2066 to 2077 there was unrest in Canada that America harshly put down with on the spot executions. As you can see in the Fallout intro that evlbastrd posted.

Also it might interest you to note that Canada is mentioned in every Fallout game todate :tops:

I was just reading info from galaxy news network from before the war, in Fallout 2. It says that when America annexed Canada, it was by popular demand of the citizens of Canada. Keep in mind, this was also after America got access to the last known source of oil in the planet, and sabotaged China's oil rig from the race of getting to the oil first. Then after that the UN demanded USA to share their supply of oil, the USA walked out of the UN and told them to F themselves.

Then America annexed Canada and brought the Canadians taxes down by 50% and gave them access to 10% of the last reserves of oil.

The next year, the house of congress impeached the president of Jaywalking, saying hes not above the law (but its implied they did it because of the recent annexation of Canada).

I can get some screenshots ill take of the sources of this, but I gotta go to work now, so ill get em later.

The line about Canada being annexed by popular demand by the people of Canada is likely propaganda. Seeing as how the US had to deploy Power Armoured infantry to Canada to fight Canadian resistance (as seen in the Fallout 1 intro), it doesn't look like Canada willingly joined the US.

In Fallout, the http://www.falloutwiki.com/United_Nations disbanded in 2052. How could they be around in http://www.falloutwiki.com/Timeline#2074 when the US announced that they would not trade the last supply of petroleum with the rest of the world?

Also, it looks like you are getting this information from the http://www.falloutwiki.com/Sierra_Depot_GNN_Transcript. The information in that is considered non-canon, due to contradictions with the existing timeline. For example, it says that China invaded Alaska on 10.10.2077, even though the US had already reclaimed Alaska ten months earlier.

Canadians fought back against U.S annexation. Incited there wrath of the Cnadians even more, most likely by cutting down there trees and mining the crap out of North Canada.

TBH, the Canadians and Canada should have not resisited United States. Just saying. Your Americans with the exception you hail the Queen. :P

That we would let the damn Yanks take Canada doesn't indicate much about Britain's global position; hell if the culture of the 50's really persisted then the Canadians would still use the Union Flag. I honestly think that the developers just didn't think about it.

Well, there are things that change. The pre-war flag of the USA is unique for the FO Universe.

I've said before that the UK must have been as weak or weaker than today or we would have been in on the war e.g nuking D.C.
The 50's UK was still a super power and probably 3rd or 4th most powerful in the world and saw it's empire including Canada as the center of it identity and pride, they would have gone way over sane actions to defended any part of it

Actually I haven't seen anywhere in Fallout that shows the Maple Leaf as the Canadian Flag. I have changed it on Nukapedia twice now, explaining that the flag would be the Red Ensign (Union Flag as you put it) but they changed it back. I asked for a source for why they think it would be the Maple Leaf, but got nothing back.

So as far as I can tell there is no source. Maybe one of the special encounters in Fallout Tactics, but that wasn't really a flag, just a wooden sign with a maple leaf on it.

Really? Fair enough then, if there's no source for it and it's post-divergence then we cannot assume anything. Was just checking those Fallout 3 newspapers to see if they mentioned a Maple leaf or something but even then the Maple Leaf was a pre-1965 symbol anyway right?

Sorry about the flag, didn't know you used an ensign - thought it was just the Union Jack.

Early designs for the current flag had more of a facy looking maple left. But the flag we have now has been the same since 1965, same year the Ensign was replaced.

It is unknown. Maybe Bob n Doug will be in the next FO game and we will find out.

Maybe it is 14 leaves surrounding an E.

Would be funny to come across two ghouls named Bob and Doug :D

But yeah to say the Flag was the maple leaf is odd to me, cause it wasn't the flag of Canada during the 1950s. Maybe Tag or Agent C can fill us in on a source for the maple leaf being the flag.

Well the divergence doesn't mean things didn't change.

FO1 and 2 both had real world weapons or prototypes(H&K G11) that did not exist in 1950s.

So, maybe the Canadian flag became the red leaf, maybe not. Or, like the USA flag it ended up becoming something unique to the FO World.

I'm American and I have no racism towards Canada. In fact I love and visited Toronto. But since the US and Canada share the same continent. Why wouldn't Canada have allied with the U.S? Especially with the threat of nuclear war on their doorstep? I mean when faced with extermination why couldn't both countries put their differences aside? I know the war was with the U.S, but do you really think they were gonna stop with the destruction of the U.S? For the record both pre-war China and USA in the FO universe, sound like extremists. Especially with the lack of resources, both countries would do anything no matter how unsavory.

America closed its border and kept its resources for itself. So why would Canada then want to help them? The United States is Canada's largest trading partner. So when America closed its border with Canada. It would have devastated Canada's economy.

Canada most likely didn't want to get involved with the Sino-American War because it was an every country for themselves. Canada would have been trying to hold onto its independence and resources and as I pointed out. America would have all but destroyed Canada's economy.

So relations between Canada and the USA would have been very poor if not hostile. So when China invaded Alaska. One of the ways for Canada to get some pay back would have been to deny America use of Canada's airspace.

Which in the end backfired on Canada since America just went ahead and took over Canada shortly after China's invasion.

What I meant was before they let their relations go to hell.

Their relations went to hell before China even invaded. So if you are asking why Canada didn't ally with the States to fight China.. It would be because America destroyed Canada's economy by closing the border and not sharing resources.

Canada is a stereotypically nice and friendly country. My estimation is that not one bike fell on the gentle giant to the north....... However..... 90% of the Canadian population lives within 100 miles of the American border... I would imagine most of their major cities would be ravaged by desperate and armed Americans.... by don't use that phrase.... They don't like it ...... -_-

In this scenario... I say let us die. Let us die by the thousands. We will not fire a single bullet. Against a foe as powerful as the States? Not much you can do, nope go all passive resistance. Let them massacre us, and our blood will be our freedom. I think it's pretty obvious what would happen, Americans might like war but I don't get the distinct impression you like slaughtering men, women, and children who are dying without fighting.

A very good point, passive resistance worked extremely well for Ghandi. I would imagine the French Canadians (Quebequa) would be the first to go. (I would estimate)
