Question about Stewards

Post » Fri Nov 16, 2012 9:27 pm

Is it possible to have the same steward across multiple houses?

For example, Aela is my steward at Heljarchen Hall, and due to mistakes in building on my part I don't have enough room to adopt kids, therefore I need to move (since you can't redesign the home once it's built).

If I was to build a new house, could I make Aela my steward there as well by the same method as the first time (have her follow you to your new house), or would I have to get a new steward?

As an update:

The answer is - yes, you can! I went to Lakeview Manor, built up the house so it had a main hall and I asked Aela to be my steward again. So far it's working.

And when you order house upgrades, which house gets them?

The correct house. I ordered all the materials to my new Lakeview home and they all arrived properly.

I was actually surprised that everything worked properly. I then told my wife to move (after I had built the bedroom, otherwise the option doesn't appear) and both her and my kid (and his pet mud crab) showed up at my house the next day.

The only glitch so far is that I can't fire the bard from my old house, but that seems to be a fairly common issue.

I bought a cow too but that was right before I stopped playing for the night and I haven't been outside yet. I assume that worked fine as well but I can make sure once I get home later and edit this post.

EDIT: Yes, cows, chickens and whatnot are all working properly.

Thanks for the reply, it sounds interesting, but I prefer having three stewards one for each house. Can you hire another steward for the first house?

Hmm, it doesn't look like it. I tried with Sven and also with Mjoll after looking at http://www.gamefront.com/skyrim-hearthfire-stewards-list/, as it lists Sven as "glitchy" and Mjoll as not.

That list also says Aela is glitched. I don't know what that means in regards to severity or results, but perhaps what I did is part of that glitch. If that's the case, I'm happy because I moved houses and got to keep my original steward. If one cares about having multiple stewards then this may be an issue.

I have never had trouble with Aela, although she did take off and vanish for a while. Mjoll neither of my characters could ever get as a steward. Maybe if you try a housecarl for the first house? All the housecarl's can be stewards.

You might like the steward you have, but if you cannot get a steward for the previous house, it does not seem much of an advantage, but just a glitch.

I tried with Argis the Bulwark, the housecarl for Markarth and Calder (housecarl in Windhelm) and they don't work either. Lydia (housecarl in Whiterun) is my wife so therefore she can't be a steward.

Looks like it's glitched, I guess. Either that or I have terrible luck with getting people to be stewards.

I'm guessing you can't get a new steward because, as far as the game is concerned, Aela is still the steward of Heljarchen. Easy way to check would be to kill her, then see if you can hire a new steward.

My second character has both Argis and Calder as stewards, so it is likely a glitch that allowed Aela to be made steward of the second house. Leaving your first with no steward and no way to ask anyone else. killing her might leave two steward vacancies, but if you are that attached to her I doubt you would want to solve the problem that way. But you could just save and then test it out.

That's what I was suggesting he do.
