Im fairly new to TES, (only tried oblivion, currently playing skyrim) and want to know, what are the elder scrolls, and what is their purpose?

Some ancient texts who were possibly written by the Ancient Gods, some have incredible power, but mostly no one knows what they really are, they are just really desired and if anyone reads them, they may see the future or a possible future... but will degrade their sight each time you read them.
