Question About the Gauss Rifle

Post » Wed Sep 01, 2010 7:53 pm

Forgive my ignorance if this has been asked before, but has the problem with the Gauss Rifle been fixed in New Vegas?

For those of you who don't know what the problem was from Fallout 3, when firing the gun outside of VATS, the projectile always went a bit up and to the right of where you aimed. This was quite annoying and basically almost forced you to use the gun in VATS just so you could hit something. The problem was believed to be because the Gauss Rifle was first made as sort of an over the shoulder weapon (like the Tesla Cannon), and upon switching it's animation to the standard rifle animation, the point where the shot was fired was kept in the default coordinates of where it first was instead of its new position. Or something along those lines.

So has this been fixed?

Thanks in advance.

Considering the entire gunplay and aiming system has been tweaked for New Vegas, I would be very surprised and dismayed if they ported the Gauss Rifle over without fixing that glaring issue. It's not like it was an issue no one complained about either, it's well known.

I would say don't worry about it.

All scoped rifles in FO3 had that trait. Once you figured it out hitting things from very long range wasn't so hard. I'm hoping they keep it, yet change it so you need to aim high rather than low. Good way to fake bullet drop on the long range shots.

I thought that the Guass Rifle bug was the whole not-doing-listed-damage-while-in-VATS thing.

Yeah, it does that too.
Gauss Rifle... so cool, so useful, but so buggy.

I'm not really worried about it, I'm just curious. Though yes, I would be surprised as well. And yet, at the same time, I kind of wouldn't.

I'm sure if the problem is still there, there will be a mod to fix it anyways.

I never noticed that with my sniper rifle before. It usually hit exactly or very close to where I aimed. With the Guass Rifle, if I aimed for the head and shot, it would not hit the creature or NPC in the head even if they were 30 ft. away.

Didn't care for the Jack-In-The-Gauss's appearance TBH. So I never noticed these bugs.

It wasn't just the Gauss Rifle, everything with a scope had this problem. It was a pain in the [censored], but it was manageable once you got used to it.

I believe that's called 'realism'.

Not really. Last time I checked bullets fall. They don't continuously travel up and to the right. I think it's something to do with gravity.

... It's a bug. If you can even call it that. The reason it happens is because when you use the scope the bullet leaves the gun after it recoils. Try it yourself. You'll probably notice that the guns all recoil slightly to the right, and then straight up, when they're scoped in. That's not a coincidence.

Hmm... I just loaded up a game and you're right. I thought it was just the energy weapons, but you're right, even the standard bullets defy gravity.

Ah. So that's the reason. Makes more sense that way. I don't know who told me it was because the Gauss Rifle used to have an over the shoulder animation.

Anyways, I'm hoping this issue is fixed. If not, it's not that much of a bother, I guess. Especially since a mod will probably come out that fixes this anyway.

I reckon it will be fixed, what with all of the tinkering Obsidian have done with the aiming. If not I'll just have to put up with it. Again lol. I'll be playing on console so no mods for me :(
