A question about the Lever Action Shotgun.

Post » Sun May 23, 2010 6:35 pm

So normally, I don't use 20 Gauge weapons, as I deemed them weak, admittedly, I was only using the Caravan Shotgun, but ever since I tried out the Lever Action Shotgun, I've used it considerably. One thing I'm curious about though, seeing as I'm not a gun nut like I know others here are, everytime you fire off a round, near the end of the firing sequence, theres a light 'thwump' noise like when you launch a ball out of a compressed air tube, what is this noise exactly?

It's either the empty cartridge leaving the breach or a new one being loaded in. Like the 'pulling something out of a pipe' noise.

I love that gun.

I think it's the sound of the air rushing back into the barrel after the shot leaves but I'm probably wrong.

I love shotguns, get Riot or Hunting shotguns (preferably Dinner Bell), the related perks and you've got some of the best guns for medium distance.

I like the Lever Action-shotgun IRL, I'm a svcker for old weaponry. But the odd thing is, it's a 10/12 gauge shotgun lol.

As for the noise, I really couldn't tell you, a "twhwump" could be anything.

I m not sure Mr. House more fps are implementing that noise for assault rifles, and Im not sure what they are getting at. I ve never noticed that noise from guns in real life. I ve fired several different kinds from various eras, and have never heard that sound.

Im not around a ton of gunfire............. .46ACP should have the best grip on what that is, and if it is a common sound.

It sounds like air being forced in or out, but I ve been at shotgun shoots and fired and heard a lot of other people fire a variety of shot guns..............I never heard that sound in real life .

Are you asking how the lever action shotgun is epic?

Or are you asking how it can wreck raiders?

Or are you asking how you love the sound of the lever when your shooting it?

Don't ask what your lever action shotgun can do for you but what you can do for your lever action shotgun.

It sounds like the audio is messing up. That is not a gun sound.

Since we are talking about the technical stuff about Guns, I hate it when you reload weapons with shell thingies like the Grenade Rifle where you manually take out the thingermabob, it ejects itself IRL. Talk about a lazy way of adding longer reload times :P

Colonel, Sir, I don't recall the sound you describe. If I have the oppotunity, I'll check it out tonight and see if I can shed some light on the situation, Sir.

It's been a real long damn time since I've shot a M79. I mean a real damn long time. I do not recall having to manually extract the spent casing. The 40mm is a pretty large case, and IIRC, they get pretty darn hot when fired. I think I'd remember burning my fingers on one.

Well, the thing is, you kind of have to tilt your head to hear it if you know what I mean. because it's somewhere between when you fire the shot, and before you fire the next one. It's not as loud as the Grenade Rifle's thwump noise, it's much softer, but still detectable.

I have my PS3 hooked up to a sweet samsung home theater system with the rear speakers both right behind my favourite chair in the middle of my living room. I've heard that sound lol
I think it's great the way all the quirky new vegas sounds are represented in true virtual 3d, kinda freaky in Vault 34 though... I almost shizm'd myself a few times hearing them damn vault dwellers.. The ones that are locked in that room you can't access... I swear they are there just to constantly unnerve the player...

Is there usually voices and mild screaming accompanied by this ?

Yeah, the graphic in NV for the lever action shotgun, which uses 20 gauge shells, has a huge barrel- larger than the 12 gauge shotguns depicted in the game. An actual 20 gauge shotgun barrel would be noticeably smaller in diameter than that of a 12 gauge gun.

The sound in question comes at the time that the empty shell hull should hit the ground. If you fire a bunch of weapons and listen for the shell casings/hulls hitting the ground, they're all there, but the lever-action makes this dull thud sound, not unlike dropping scrap metal, rather than the sound the hunting shotgun makes, which sounds much more like a hull hitting the ground. Since the other 20ga shotguns are break-actions, they don't seem to have any sounds for the casing hitting the ground. I believe this is a little audio bug, where a different sound, eg: the sound used for dropping scrap metal, was used as a place holder for the actual 20ga hull hitting the ground sound, but was never replaced. I poked around the geck to find where the sound comes from, but it occurs neither on the gun sounds (all 3) nor the ammo itself. Since I can't find where the sound is applied, I can't fix it. I kinda svck at the geck anyways.

I wonder what goes on in a Feral Ghouls mind: "...Hmm? Oh! A human! You know what I'm gonna do? I'm going to scream REALLY loud and then attack him. Yeah that sounds like a good plan."

Forget the Lever Action Shotgun, go get yourself a Single Shotgun. That's a man's gun right there.

Why in the world would you use the Single action shotgun when there is the Hunting shotgun, Riot shotgun, and the Lever action shotgun. The lever action shotgun has a higher faster rate, Higher damage, and looks better.

But with the Single Shotgun, you don't have to worry about wasting ammo, because you reload after every shot.

Lever Action Shotgun + Cowboy + Shotgun Surgeon = Hurricane of pain. Load that puppy up with some magnum ammo and start massacring anything that moves with impunity.

The Lever Action is probably one of my favorite weapons in the game. Couple that with a fully modded "Lucky" and my enemies will reap the whirlwind.
