Question about the release date

Post » Wed Sep 01, 2010 9:26 pm

Hello all,

Here is my situation, i am currently stationed in Okinawa, Japan, I pre ordered the game on steam, my steam account was created when i was stationed in California (if that makes a difference) and i was wondering since im here in japan will i still be able to unlock the game at the same time as everyone else in the states. (Obviously with the time difference of course for being 13 hours ahead of EST), will i be able to play the game at 1pm my time on the 19th?

Good question.
Probably yes, but doesn't Steam detect from which country you logon and might that have an influence on it?
Wondering that myself.

Ah, well that actually does make sense, i assume they can download it before then and activate it when it releases though. Do you have a download limit in Japan?

Well, there have been a few topic on the same matter, people who per-order the game from the store have say when they install the game it have to go through steam which I don't quite understand the whole story. But I'm sure there a lot of complain already but we shall have to wait and see what happen. And to answer your question on the limit. No..it seem steam have an unlimited download

I would guess that Steam goes by your currency/place of purchase. If you purchased it in Cali, then you'll have the US unlock. If you purchased in Japan, you'll have the international lock. Don't quote me on that, but I would assume that to be the case.

My understanding from past Steam releases is that Steam autodetects your location based on the ISP you are using. I'm basing this on people who've said they were outside the US on business or something and weren't able to play a new release at the same time as in the US. If it was as simple as changing your address on file, there would be a lot of fraudulent addresses on file! So, presumably you will not have access to the game until the international release date (everywhere outside of the Americas) until the 22nd at 1201AM GMT. The only exception to that I can think of, and this is pure specualtion on my part, is if Steam sees a military base ISP as being American. Meaning that if you live on base it might work.

Honestly, your best bet would be to ask other servicpersons who've been there for awhile. There has to be some Steam users who would be able to tell you how it worked on previous titles.

Good luck!

Okinawa is still good. All the typhoons haven't destroyed her yet haha. But what i was hoping was that maybe since im on a military base which is technically part of the united states i would still be able to, but im not sure if steam realy would go that far into detail about the release times. Stores here on base sell games on the same day as they are released in the states though. they dont do pre orders though so thats why i went with steam

Anyone know what time it's available if you've purchased and downloaded through steam? I'm in California.

*Edit - nevermind, managed to google it. 12:01 Pacific.

i just looked it up on steam and its telling me that the game will be: "Available: 19 October 2010
This game will unlock in approximately 1 day and 9 hours"

Although my friend's, who didnt pre order it, say: "Available: 20 October 2010
This game will unlock in approximately 1 day and 14 hours"

Not much of a difference but still that gives me alot of hope, ive been looking forward to this game for a long time

If I recall correctly, on F3, I was in and playing before the US got in, but that was with GFWL and I was in Australia.

From what I know of other Steam games, it can either be a sequential release by regions, or it can be a universal release. Largely depends on how they want it to happen. I suspect that we all get it at the same time - hence the separate release dates for people.

Note though, that if the game has strong early sales or pre-ordering, a lot of us logging on at once could cause some problems. I've known three games that had this issue, at least, plus there is always the problem of early Steam bugs - some of these won't have been found before general release, etc.

Do you have a download limit in Japan?

Japan have one of the best internet infrastractures in the world, I would be very surprised if any ISP there had download limits.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure that's the case. Steam detects from where you log in and unlock the games accordingly.

you'll get it at the japan release time probably, steam uses ip addresses to see where you are.

Well, I'm curious about this as well. I am in the same situation, except I'm in Iraq. My service is actually derived from Europe, though I purchased the pre-order in the states. I sent Steam an email detailing all of that, even offering to email them a copy of my deployment orders, but did not get a response back (and this was done on the 14th/15th). While I would certainly survive 3 more days, it would be irritating, especially since I get one of my few days off on the 21st... which would work perfectly for a 19th, but not 22nd release.

Good news for Australians. I've ordered from EB Games Australia, and just got an email informing me that my order has been shipped. Due to this, I expect we may recieve it one day earlier than expected, on Wednesday.
