Question about pc version (2 days to decide)

Post » Sun Jun 17, 2012 9:02 am

I already own Morrowind on the the original xbox, however I wasn't able to play it that much back when I first got it, and never got back around to playing it. I've tried going back to it recently, but there were a few small things in this older game that became a little frustrating. One of them was the times when I'd decide to go explore some remote area, find nothing much of interest, and have to make the long, slow trip back to town from the middle of nowhere. I found that with my want-to-explore-everything tendencies and how long it takes to walk places that I would be both bored and out of time to play by the time I'd get back to some place worth being.

Sooo, seeing the pc version on sale this weekend on Steam, I wondered... Is there any way, when doing this on pc to 'edit' your location, get back to a town or other marked place faster? A mod for some sort of non town-to-town fast travel maybe? Even just making my character walk a lot faster would make it so much more bearable.

I have such fond memories of this game, have had so many great times in it, and love the world so much that I really want to be able to get back into it. But with much less time to spare now and dozens of other games waiting in a growing backlog, this is a big barrier. So can anyone tell me if there is an answer to my problem?

Mark/recall spells, Almsivisi and Divine intervention spells and scrolls, potions of fortify speed (either purchased or home-made), fortify speed spells, a piece of clothing (look through Tips and Cheats section), guild guides, silt striders, ships, at some point jump spells. And if that's not enough, you could always add a mod related to fast travel; IDK what they are, but they are out there.

Yeah, almsivi and divine intervention scrolls are your friends. They're very accessible from a low level, available for purchase from Imperial forts, Tribunal temples, and enchanters at mages guilds. Divine intervention scrolls teleport you to the nearest Imperial fort and almsivi intervention teleports you to the nearest temple, both of which are always located in or just outside of towns.

Mega-cheating would be using the 'COC' command.

Yeah, almsivi and divine intervention scrolls are your friends...
And they actually tell you that in the game - "never go into the wilds without an Intervention scroll", or WTTE. :D
With a combination of Almsivi and Divine Intervention, boat and silt strider transport, and Mage Guild teleportation, combined with Mark&Recall, most towns can be reached quite fast. Propylon teleport could be used, too, but is tedious to set up that it works.
That's all in the game, even the XBox version, so the game's not exactly short on fast travel.
If that's not enough, there are Multi-Mark mods for the PC providing multiple mark&recall destinations.

Thanks for the info guys, had known and forgotten about a lot of those. Not that I even saved up enough money to keep any kind of stock of them since I spent more time exploring then questing. :ermm: Need to change that. I think I'm actually going to go ahead and get it for pc, easier access and more opportunities to play (sharing a tv with others in the house and travel a bit), being among other reasons.

I've also been itching to have mod access since I first decided I loved the game enough to bother back in '04...

Picking up an Amulet of Recall was one of those "game changers" for me, and it's available at a standard shop for a few hundred Septims. Add an inexpensive scroll of Mark from a popular alchemist and you're "good to go" (or at least to return). A multimark mod gives you the ability to expand from there.

Mods are a huge plus. It wasn't until I spent a month or two playing Oblivion, then returned to Morrowind when I got sick of the scaling nonsense and "can't fail" mechanics, that I suddenly realized how "dated" Morrowind's graphics were. A global replacer (Visual Packs) and a body replacer (Better Bodies) made a huge difference, and MGE with animated grass was another leap forward from that. The new graphics overhaul compilation has just about everything bundled into one neat package.
