Question to beer drinkers.

Post » Mon Aug 03, 2015 10:58 pm

So, I've always heard good things about Samuel Adams and on that recommendation, I bought some tonight with what little money I have. Three beers in, I'm not really feeling it. It's not BAD per se, but there's an undercurrent of wateriness in the aftertaste I just can't shake. Is Samuel Adams Boston Lager overrated or is this just one of those 'different strokes for different folks' situations? Because, as I said, I expected something really good but it's kind of okay at best.

Back when I still drank, I thought it was a little overrated. It wasn't bad, but IMO not all it's cracked up to be.

Eventually, I settled on a Miller product for my drinking enjoyment.

Yeah, it has me a little buzzed and loose, which is always good, but the taste isn't exactly how others made it sound. It's not horrible like Budweiser or anything, but I kind of feel like the taste doesn't live up to the hype at all.

Nah, it's not just you. It's not all that. I guess before the "craft beer explosion" it was one of the more drinkable beers that was likely to be stocked in stores and bars. Nowadays if you can't find a decent beer you're just not looking.

Of course, all of that comes with the normal caveat:

Any Beer >> Not Beer

I'm not a a fan of it either, but I can still enjoy a few if placed in front of me.

The thing with a new flavour, brand or ale versus lager, is the same thing with beer in general. When you first try it, you likely won't enjoy it, but it can easily grow on you.

Heh, well, I'd never drank it as I usually stick to pale lagers and figured I'd branch out. I initially didn't, but people go on about how great it is. While it's not the absolute worst beer by far, I feel like it's the popular drink to praise. I was just curious if I'd made a wrong turn somewhere because I wasn't enjoying it as much as other people seem to.

That's true. I'm not sure, but I mean, it could be worse, I'm not really bothered by it as a beer, it just doesn't seem to live up to the reputation it's been given, unless a lot of those people stick to SABL or something.

I like local dark ales. Never could go back to mass commercial beers after trying that ale.

Back when I drank (18 years ago this coming October) all I cared about was getting the cheapest beer with the highest alcohol content I could lay my hands on. That was usually Natural Ice or maybe Icehouse, depending on which was on sale. Didn't much notice the taste after slamming back three or four anyway.

The first time I drank Samuel Adams it tasted like vomit, those commercials make it look like "it's the beer for sophisticated people"....YEAH----I'll just stick to Rolling Rock or Coors.

If I could find the SNL sketch where Samuel Adams turns down a pint of that brand calling it piss water, I would link it.

Topics like this remind me that I'm weird, I've tried a multitude of beers and I've never liked the flavor of any of them, save for alcoholic root beer. If I want to drink with friends I always have to get something fruity or just take shots. Last time I sat down and had a few beers I only managed to get three down by shoveling a third of a pizza down my throat to cover up the taste.

I'm not that big on lager, unless it's very cold and it's a hot day, in which case it can be refreshing. But in terms of taste, I prefer porters and stouts, or failing that, any random ale (as in "not lager"). The temperature is also important, with lager being as cold as possible to mask its taste, whereas the others should be at "cellar temperature": obviously not warm, but maybe about 8-10 degrees C is optimal for my taste.

Sam Adams has some good beers but is pretty much overrated overall.

But with any beer, no matter how good, it takes some getting used to. If you are used to pale ales then switching to say, a stout, would be off putting. You'd need to drink a few to get used to them. Drink a few more and then save the rest for another day and try them again. See if it makes any difference. Which Sam Adams did you get?

Ahh...as for good beer. I really need to go through that top 250 beers list again. There there was that top 20's list with some Belgian beer made by monks in Westvleteren or something like that rated as the best. Think it was called Westvleteren 12 or some number like that. Then again, Europeans drink their beer warm. <_<

I need some good beer in my life. I don't even drink much anymore lol. Not to say I can't, I can down quite a lot and that kind of svcks when you want a good buzz going.

I would love to come in with some American piss-water, Europe is better, comment but I really can't stand beer/larger of any variation. Damn it.

Well you are comparing an entire continent to one nation. Personally, I find that flattering. :P

But really, I vastly prefer cold beer. But European beer is pretty damn good. American beer is really good as well, except the major franchises. Not many good ones there.

Shock Top and Blue Moon are good, a little sweeter than I like, but good.

Crap I just got inadvertently reminded of something. I once had a yard long glass of this beer that had skulls on it. It was really good and all I can really remember is that it had a shock top beer next to it on the tap. Thinking like dead mans hands or something but that isn't the name.

Especially if you're especially sensitive to bitter tastes (a so-called supertaster), it's not uncommon at all to have a strong dislike for the taste of alcohol, especially beer. The fact that you go for fruity drinks or just quick shots suggests you are indeed a supertaster.

I have only ever tasted one beer that didn't taste like crap to me (wasn't what I'd call good either though). I don't drink much in general either though because without a lot of junk it's just too bitter for me.

Fair enough, I only get the commercialized stuff up here. Same goes for German and other European beers. I haven't been in the States for a long time.

I can no longer drink due to medications but when I could I liked XX ( Dos Equis) and Angry Orchid. As far as hard drinks go cant go wrong with Smirnoff Vodka or Captain Morgans Spiced Rum.

Fun fact:
No one likes the taste of beer when they first try it. It truly is an acquired taste, and even beer fans often take awhile to appreciate a new brand or flavour because the spectrum of variables is so massive.
When I person says "I don't like beer, but I don't even drink." is like saying "I don't like Skyrim, but I don't even play video games." :D

It takes time to truly discover and appreciate beer, because it's a complex beverage. Equally complex (or even more so) than all the types of wine.

And now I'm thirsty :P
