Question before quest

Post » Fri Feb 18, 2011 10:34 pm

I have one main question before I start a thread in this forum. Are chronicle styled retellings of what went on during actual game play a tired and worn out genre in here? I have started a work along these lines. I don't want to start a thread if that theme has been played out to the point that it will fail to intrest readers in here. It is titled "The Talendor Chronicles" and follows my main character from inception onward.

Yes and no.

Yes, a point by point re-telling is boring, no matter how graphic you get when killing Daedra ;) we've all played the main quest (some of us several times) so its boring to read about it.

However, there have been several successful fan fics on the game events because those authors changed things up a little and went into more detail then the game did to make things fresh.

So if you can do that, I'm sure people won't get bored (hopefully!)

My character won't be doing the main quest. However, the tutorial is what it is. The game doesn't go free-form until after that. Writing about the events in the tutorial sets the story up and has the beginnings of character development. I'll wait to hear a few more responses and opinions. If they are favorable, I'll start with the prologue (which is written in the 3rd person) and follow it with Chapter 1 (which is written in the 1st person, as will be the rest of the story). Thanks for the response.

I see now. I thought you meant you were doing the MQ. My mistake. So it will be about just your character traveling around Cyrodiil during the events of the game?

Well, as Blade said, there are ways to make events within the game interesting even to those that have played them countless times. However, the tutorial would take some major creative license to make it new enough to keep people reading. The beginning of a story is the most important part to attracting readers, and telling all about how the emperor visits your cell and opens a secret passageway is certainly old news

Start in prison if you like, but the old tutorial is horribly overdone, not to mention in rather poor taste to begin with. I would much rather read a story that starts with something new and exciting; though if you have already started writing it from the prison there is nothing to say it cannot be a good story.

Basically all anyone can tell you is that it is your story, do with it as you will, but taking things directly from the game is old news. You can put a twist to them, or make them more realistic, or even have a "what if" scenario, but in the end it's still probably been done. Of course, there is no such thing as a new idea in writing; all I can say is do what you want to do, and what feels right to you ;)

I always support the writing of any kind of story though, so good luck with whatever you decide to do :) I'm sure it will be great :goodjob:

Alright then. I'll go for it. If the tutorial portion gets too bland, readers can wait and skip ahead to the new stuff. The tutorial portion is in the Prologue, Chapter 1, and part of Chapter 2. I have already written too much to go back and change it, and I feel that it is a necessary part of the story. You all can be the judge. Watch for the thread..."The Talendor Chronicles". Thanks for your input.

I forgot to answer Blade's question...

Correct. The only part of the game that will be 100% in common with other players is the tutorial, because it is not free-form. As old and tired as the tutorial is, it is the perfect place to set up the story.
