RP question, character with 'amnesia'

So something I always like about TES is that in the beginning of the game you're a prisoner-not a good person, but your past is never clear. You get a fresh start every time, and whatever was, is now irrelevant.

I want to try fleshing out a new character a little more. For example, I play a Dunmer and in the beginning of the game you get asked by one of the guards basically "where are you from?" and then you pick your race.

One of the theories people have is that the main character you play in every or most TES games didn't exist before the moment you start a new game which I think is interesting aswell. Anyway I basically never tried to really RP and I'm not very creative at it, but I want to make a Dark Elf that either has amnesia or didn't exist before starting the game, and I can't of something that makes sense that my character would say about where he was from because that guard answers "Great. I'm sure you'll fit right in." after you choose your race. I was hoping to get some suggestions that'd make sense so it's easier to think of something by myself.

IMO, in order to RP a character with amnesia you have to not RP at all. I.e. you dont give your character a backstory.

I don;t understand what you mean with "didn;t exist before starting the game". Does it mean you character magically pops out of thin air in the prison ship ?

As for the "I'm sure you'll fit right in" line that the guard gives you, don't put too much meaning into it. I'm sur he says that to every released prisoner. Think of it as the TES equivalent of the cashier's "Thanks you, have a nice day".

I always took it as a bit of sarcasm, delivered with an eye-roll. The guard has been there long enough to know that the locals dislike and distrust outsiders. He probably figures that you'll soon be "fitting right in"-to the local jail. :)

Yeah, if you have to be welcomed to Vvardenfell, your chances of really fitting in are pretty slim, at least outside Imperial towns like Ebonheart, Pelagiad, and Caldera. Even in Hlaalu towns you may be welcome (or at least your gold will be) but you'll always be an outsider.
