"Question!" - Dwight Schrute

Hey peeps,

Trying to get a feel for the land size of Skyrim. Yeah, I know it's similar to the size in Oblivion....but it's been a couple years since my time in Cyrodiil. The Capitol Wasteland, on other hand, I'm slightly more familiar with. How large is Oblivion's land size compared to Fallout 3's? (What I'm really asking is how large do you think Skryim will be compared to the Capitol Wasteland)

Enlighten me, please.

Why don't you look at the third result down.

I would insult your really hard in this space but I'm scared of that bear with the cane and top hat.

It's about the same size as Oblivion.

Skyrim is supposed to be slightly smaller but feel bigger with the mountains and things like that.

Yes, I stated that I already knew this information in the OP. I'm a little more familiar with the land in Fallout 3. How large would you say Cyrodiil was in Oblivion compared to the Capitol Wasteland in Fallout 3?

It's going to be about the same size 'birds-eye-view', however it'll feel bigger cause of the type of landscape. There's your answer. Right there. Fallout 3 map is equal to Cyrodiil (aprox.).

Maybe http://i.imgur.com/uBWCz.jpg might help put Skyrim's size into perspective?

If you're familiar with the TES series, no game world seems 'big' anymore. :P Daggerfall was painful, twice the size of great Brittain. :P Then again, that's a world you could actually 'get lost' in. I liked Daggerfall... perhaps more than Morrowind... hmmm...

This is nice...kinda gives me some perspective. Much thanks.

I'll be honest, I'm a little concerned about the size of Skyrim. While the mountains look awesome, it also limits the amount exploration...maybe? I guess time will tell. Gotta have faith in the developers.

No need to be concerned. The #1 goal about all TES games, as stated in a recent interview with Todd Howard ABOUT TES V, is open world and free exploration. Bethesda has done an amazing job with every game so far, and Skyrim sounds better than ever. I have complete faith in them.

I definitely feel as if there a fine line between too large and being...claustrophobic (for lack of a better term). Daggerfall was too large for me...and games like Mass Effect 2 (which I still liked) was too small.

You're probably right. I've never been unimpressed by the world in ES games. Doesn't look like that's going to change.

First off, that let me Google it for you website is the [censored] coolest thing I have ever seen. Bookmarking it, it will definitely help answer the stupid questions on Yahoo Answers and other forums. Also, I think the mountains will add more game space if they do it right. A lot of people think mountains are like giant triangles when really there can be awesome twisty paths and hidden areas. I hope Bethesda has found a way to make things like craggy rock and walls and stuff without needing models. I have wanted to make mesas for so long but I can't model and the look terrible with the landscaping tool.

Mountains help exploration because the limit the speed that one can travel, and also give the illusion of larger lands. A If you have a mountain between two cities, it suddenly takes over 2 times longer to travel between them, making the distance seem greater. This lets developers stuff more content around mountains without it making it seem like the area is over saturated. If you put 2 cities right by each other like that on an open plain, their proximity would be extremely obvious and immersion breaking.

Yep, increasing traversable surface area by heightening terrain (mountains) should make the world feel much larger than Oblivion or Fallout 3.

TBH I'd like Skyrim to be a bit bigger, say 20-24 square miles, even if the stuff had to be a bit more spread out. Just my preference, it would make the world seem more real. I mean like here http://www.storiedgamer.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/skyrim_dragon_triumphant.jpg you have a mountain by the path that is barely taller than a pine tree. It's something that won't bother me too much, but I'd like them to be bigger.

Exactly, even if Skyrim was smaller, it would still feel bigger because you have to go up, around, and down mountains. I always prefer quality over quantity.

And its looking like every TES game they are scaling mountains larger and larger.

When has any official statment been made saying its slightly smaller? Todd has said there similar sizes, there has been some member on the forum speculating its slightly smaller and other like myself saying the land area might be slightly larger(because less water compared to Cyrodill so more land, and not even getting into the mountain thing).

That is part of a mountain, the mountain itself does not even fit the screen you linked!

Ok, I think I'm beginning to understand. I was under the assumption that mountains would be untraversable...that the player would have to travel around them as opposed to over them. I suppose that would give the illusion of a larger game world.
